DF Gameplay Questions / Military Alert question
« on: June 03, 2011, 03:16:49 pm »
This new military system has been really making me angry.

First siege today, I active my alert that sends all the dwarves to their quarters, and the first thing that happens is my squad deactives, and I can't reactive them, and now that the siege is over (3 of the goblins ran into cage traps, causing the squad to break and flee), I can't get my dwarves to leave their burrows after the fight is over. I finally fixed the issue by deleting the burrow, but can someone explain to me why I couldn't get them to leave?

General Discussion / Conservatives for REAL change
« on: April 08, 2009, 10:49:18 pm »
I am a high school student, and a disheartened one. So, busy being a disheartened high school student in high school, the announcements came on with the usual smattering of events that not many care about/show up too, when suddenly, I heard the announcement for Conservatives for REAL change.

Aren't they liberals then?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My one-armed merchant
« on: March 30, 2009, 06:31:55 pm »
So, I got a bowman siege. It actually consisted of two squads, the bowman, and a melee lasher squad. The Bowman cut my military up pretty good, but I defeated them. The lasher squad meet the dwarf caravan, who were in my trade depot, and was completely annihlated. After literally a season of hauling crap from the field into the fort, the dwarfs left, leaving a merchant with a donkey and an axedwarf. The merchant, somehow, lost his right arm during the fight (His entire right arm is gone, and somehow sitting in my graveyard stock pile, stinking the place up). So, every other dwarf is gone, except a donkey, a one armed merchant, and an axedwarf, and I haven't a clue on how to remove them before the elves show their ugly faces.

I have no access to water or magma to dump onto their heads, and I'm wondering how I'll rid myself of this extra arm.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Two boots are for Elves
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:20:53 pm »
In my apparently futile attempt to armor and arm the dwarves of Nutwhp (The name wasn't selected by myslef, and yes, I cringe when I think of that. Aw...) I smelted iron low boots for the military. What I discovered is that when dwarves go to pick up equipment, they usually go into the shop after the metalsmith has finished making the boot, pick up ONE boot, put it on, and walk away, leaving the next boot to be scavenged by however is looking for a complete set of boots.

Thank god for machine gun crossbows, because without them.....We'd be screwed.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Emptying the map of trees due to Archery
« on: February 18, 2009, 11:49:52 pm »
Bolts and crossbows are the machineguns of DF. They kill incredibily quickly, and very few enemies can stand up to that rain of bolts. However, my 5 man marksdwarf squad (with a few hunters who need a few bolts) is eating up my bolts. I'm coming close to run out of bone bolts (which I accumlated a stockpile of close to 3000 with) and have resorted to making wooden bolts. Unfortunately, it's been eating up the trees very quickly, along with the normal demands for wood of a fortress.

What the hell am I going to do?

Other Games / A search for the next one

Man, I've decided it's time to end my time with the game Planetside.

The fights aren't what they used to be, with a constant dogfight in the skies, or constant ground battle, the tank battles consist of a Vanguard running around tossing instagib shells at the few targets. So, I've decided to move on.

What games would you recommend aside from the addictive Blizzards Warcraft, and the Everquest games. Basically, forget any game that doesn't have some sort of PvP, and has magic at it's base for the game.

Recommend away.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Your highest death rate
« on: December 11, 2008, 06:45:10 pm »
Hi. Recently, I've had to expand and increase my burial area's coffins to accommodate the new company. So far, I've up to six dead dwarves, two from insane moods from failed fey moods, one who was taken down by a failed fey mood berserk dwarf, and the rest are from hunting, so the average death rate a year so far has been 3 dead dwarves a year.

So, what's your average death rate per year minus sieges/ tantrum spiral?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Sparring with Axes
« on: December 10, 2008, 11:21:42 pm »
Hi. Recently, in an attempt to create a military, I've outfitted my dwarves in full chain and handed them axes.

However, it's been a freakin' disaster. My one axedwarf has chopped off about 2 heads, and pierced the heart of third. His kill list includes a few wolves, a kobold, and three dwarves. This can't go on.

So, I'm wondering how to fix this dilemma of one dwarf decapitating the other dwarves?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarves stopped dumping?
« on: December 08, 2008, 06:29:29 pm »
Hi.

I have a small 1 square dump for the 100000000000000000000000000 units of stone I've accumulated, However, I've noticed it's stopped being used as a dump when chunks from slaughtered animals appeared in my refuse pile. They make a terrible stink and fill up spaces that could be used by bones, so I'm wondering what gives?

DF Gameplay Questions / Issues with hunting
« on: December 07, 2008, 04:43:13 pm »
Hi. Recently, I've decided to start using hunting instead of letting my cat population grow into a massive,FPS killing monster and butchering it.And it's been very successful, powering my trade industry with leather, providing food (Though, the main food source is still Dwarven wine biscuits), and giving me bone bolts aplenty for use by the military. However, this map has wolves, and they've managed to kill off 2 of my dwarves so far, as well as cause one dwarf to tantrum, and die.

So, right now, my Hunters are armored with leather, but fight unarmed because it seems kind of self defeating to use bone bolts to kill animals to get bone bolts. I can't smith any weapons, because A. It's a major pain in the ass too, and B. I haven't actually found any metal to smith!

So, how do I solve this dilemma?

DF Gameplay Questions / Catch live land animal?
« on: December 06, 2008, 10:37:19 pm »
Hi. I'm in a new fort (As you may have learned from my statue garden disaster), and am currently producing way too much food,as usual. So, recently, a racoon wandered into my fortress. My woodcutter quickly dispatched him, but I noticed that he could be butchered. So after butchering the rodent, I sent on my trapper on a catch live animal job.

Now, he's just running around with the trap in my food stockpile. What shall I do?

EDIT: Oh. Never mind. He caught a small rodent, who I tamed. So, basically, the job provides delicacies.

Damn it.

DF General Discussion / Something I've noticed
« on: December 06, 2008, 10:17:55 am »
Why is it, that in DF, that bugs become memorable and funny?

In any normal game, a bug occurs and five minutes later you're on a forum typing in all caps screaming "ZOMG FTW?!" about it.

However, in DF, the carp having default bite attacks is actually hilarious instead of angering(Which I'm not even sure is a word) and dwarves lemming rushing to get the crap is funny.

Or dwarves milking burning cows is funny as hell.

DF Gameplay Questions / No statue Gardens
« on: December 04, 2008, 11:59:31 pm »
so, my recent (And farthest along fort, ever) fell horribly to a tantrum spiral when the goblins annihlated my military (lesson learned: Wrestlers need A.Better armor. and B. Some kind of weapon), and my people, who lived in the statue garden started killing each other.

So, I've decided in the next fortress: NO FREAKING STATUE GARDENS.

Is that okay, or will it be a giant mess?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The End of the (Family) Line
« on: November 26, 2008, 04:56:13 pm »
In my recent fortress, I had a mother and a father happily married. The Father was an elite marks dwarf, the mother a wonderful fisher dwarf. They had two children together.

So, one day, when the mother is out fishing, the elves appear. And then the Goblins appear too. A bolt strikes the mother and wounds her gravely while she drops her child (The elder child had been snatched. Whoops). The Father, being the only one of the marksdwarves not eating or drinking at the time rushes out to help his wife in combat. He strikes down many a goblin before running out of bolts and engages the goblins in mortal combat. He strikes down two goblins, mortally wounds the other, who then mortal wounds him. He died shortly afterward.

It's been about a year now. The wife just recovered from her wounds. The baby tossed himself into a pond (Surprisingly). And now, the wife is the only survivor of a happy family.
