DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Am I cursed?

Actually fell moods are lot easier to supply. Because their supply, Dwarfs, is virtually unlimited, I much rather have a fell mood than a secretive dwarf sketching pictures of blocks or a fey dwarf screaming "I MUST HAVE ADMANTITE!"

DF Gameplay Questions / Arming my champions with artifacts
« on: November 19, 2008, 06:28:32 pm »
A while back, my stirling weaponsmith made the most awesome crossbow, covered in images of dwarves fighting golbins and whatnot.

However, I just had too of my elite marksdwarves turn into champions, and yet they're still using their kobold bone and muskox bone crossbows instead of using the artifact. How do I get one of them to use the artifact?

Strange. I had one of my metalsmithes go few and produce the awesomest crossbow ever. It even had a picture of dwarf striking down a goblin.

Honestly, when I looked at the contents of the workshop I was like "Man, this is going to be a earring that the gods will envy."

I've had quite a few big sieges.

My current fort, however, is yet to be determined. They already sent and lost the local leader with no beak dogs or trolls, and those things make it interesting. At least I have a human siege to look forward too.

Hey, when you have reduced local civilization to their knees, it's always a safe bet to go to the elves.

Don't fall over yourself preparing for them, you'll be surprised by how easy they are.

Caravan shows up, ambush shows up, caravan guards slaughter ambush, I collect the gear and sell it to the caravan -- everybody wins!

Hell, I haven't grown crops in two years -- I just buy out all the booze and plants the caravans bring.  My dwarves spend all day digging for fun or attending parties.

I've been doing this, too -- more than enough clothing to buy out every caravan that comes by, if I so desire.  I've gotten to the point where I simply dump all the stuff I have on the caravan, giving me a lot of ecstatic traders.  My legendary stonecrafters sit around partying.

I've also got two leatherworkers and two clothiers set on repeatedly sewing images into the clothes, for no reason other than using up the leather form butchering the neverending flood of kittens and using up all those pigtails.

The only downside is that the goblins get killed outside of my fortress, necessitating a large trek for my haulers to grab those hundreds of scraps of clothing and drag them back...one....at....a....time....

I have the same thing he's describing going on at my fort (Up until a while ago. My population is at 77, so I'm gearing up for the sieges). The only difference is I donate the goblins to the 'Bones for Bolts' program. Other than that, I have enough food to feed every dwarf in my fort forever, my traps are well prepared, I have a champion marksdwarf squad equipped with masterwork armor and one artifact bow. I have a squad of legendary miners, and elite wrestlers ready to rock and roll.

Really, I can't wait until I have to start accommodating nobles and fending off sieges.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Collecting Refuse
« on: November 16, 2008, 07:42:25 pm »
Hi. My fortress of 55, now 54, dwarves is bumbling along nicely. The mayor's quarters have been established, the military marksdwarves are nicely supplied with leather armor, and a constant supply of bone bolts. The food is piling up in barrels, and the people know each other fantastically well. The only downside is that there is no jail yet, no captain of the guard, and the Fortress guard consists of 2 skilled wrestlers, and my military's melee power consists of a squad of three wrestlers, one elite wrestler, and two regulars, unfortunately, armed in leather armor. Not a fantastic situation, but that's what you get.

So, the human trade caravan shows up (Unfortunately, only mules because I have yet to build a road). I trade my large collection of -Turtle Shell Amulet-s for everything they have and carry it all inside. Suddenly, Ambush! Curse them! About 8 goblins show up and wreak havoc, before the human caravan guards put them down. Then, next, Another Ambush! Curse them!. This one, however, was found out by a soon-to-be-dead cat. So, I assemble my military and sally forth to battle. My wrestlers are on the scene first, and engage in combat. Directly after them, come  my marksdwarves, who make a quick meal of the melee-goblins. As the battle continues, a goblin hammerman lands a great hit on wrestler, and sends him flying into the hill, where he dies. The Marksdwarves finish the gobbos off, and leave.

Unfortunately, I now have a giant mess of corpses and dead people. I'm wondering if I should collect the goblins and the kobold (He showed up with the golbins before being shot to death by a human marksman) and place them in my refuse pile?

(Edit: Whoops. The leader of the squad, the elite wreslters, was in love with the dead guy, and is now resting in my barracks with a hurt arm. Whoops.)

Personally I'd want sand that isn't red

The one thing I never get...

I always mistake red sand for magma in screenshots so...

"DUDE WTF YOUR DWARVES ARE STANDING ON LAVA!!!!"

And then I realize that I'm a fucking idiot for putting that up and not realizing that it's sand.

[STRONG]Shell tends to be a bitch for mood provisions. Especially once you've fished out and eaten the local turtle population.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Horrible and Outright Painful Death
« on: November 15, 2008, 03:21:29 pm »
Most horrible death....

Well, my fortress guard decided to sleep in my trade depot, when the elves arrived! So, I lock the elves inside ( I forgot about the plight of my fortress guard) and went about my business. Fast forward a few months, and the donkey loses his mind. Donkeys are powerful beasts when pissed off, and so, the donkey kill all the elves and goes after my guard. The Donkey kicks off both his arms, and mangles his legs, along with browning most of his organs before a bolt from a marksdwarf killed him. He hung around for two months, in a pool of his own blood, in agony and missing limbs, before the goblins showed up and finished him off.

They're slamming into a refuse stockpile. Try removing the stockpile and see what happens.

Also, stray animals who die get auto-butchered.

Jack. Jack was with me at embark, the lone peasant and leader of my new military when it evolved. Jack, well, Jack was something else. One day, I miss assigned a work order and ended up with a bunch of obsidian swords, which I gave over to Jack and his three new underlings. They went to sparring, and Jack, in his first sparring session, slices Urist Mcrecruit (I think his name was Fath) in half. Then, at the next sparring session, he cuts off the head of the second one. I moved the third one out, because I was afraid he was going to slice him to shreds too (I learned my lesson after that, and now I used armor in sparring -.-). Jack cleared my magma pit of fire imps for a while (I think he got the magma man too), killed at least three ambushes whole. I believe Jack finally fell at the "Battle of the Drawbridge" when goblins zerged my traps up and sliced up my military. Jack made a stand at the bridge, killed many a goblin, threw many more into the magma moat below before finally having an arrow mangle his spleen, lungs and liver.  He cut down the last marksgoblin, before they routed, after which he collapsed and never regained consciousness. He was buried with a glass window onto the arena, to be forever entertained by the fights of his successors.
