DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ah...Sadly, my useless ores.
« on: August 24, 2008, 01:27:42 am »
Hi. I've been stumbling recently on a mysterious ore called Alunite. Upon investigation however, I've found that it does approximately nothing.  Does anyone have any uses for these kind of stones (The rest of stones are Obsidan.)?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Flooding The World

Just the local region. What you need to do is find a river, and find a way to pump it up and down and into all corners of every Z-level. It's possible, but only with planning and luck.

Regular defense floods the courtyard. Perfect defense needs no flooding. Ferpect defense floods THE WORLD!

With Maga. I actually had/have suicide levers of my own in all of my fortress,so that I can reclaim later.

What you could do is heard the ones you don't need into a room, lock the door, and open up a floodgate with a river behind it. Just remember to drain the water afterward.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Question on dead dwarves items
« on: August 21, 2008, 09:36:22 pm »
So, recently, I had a few of my dwarves die to carp. I air-drowned the suckers (Fittingly, my leader went about it) and ended up with a whole crapload of items from the dead dwarves, and the corpses themselves. So, I wanted to ask, what do the dwarves do with the dead guys items?

Plenty probable, if he doesn't have lava.

Good ol' hauling class citizens.

Yeah. Peasants (Or Slaves, as you might know them) are good for hauling stuff and testing your wonderful new magma/water/bridge trap.

The brook wasn't climbing up land, it was just completely and utterly failing to realize the land happened to slope down.

Movies can be uploaded here.

Now I found a Good mountain bordering an Evil desert with two magma features in a very small area. This should be exciting.

Wow, lucky you. Vertical bars will do just fine for you. Gah...

EDIT: The river in the aforementioned area features zombie carp. Thirty four of them. Ought to make for some good laughs.

4 Carp all named. Managed to burn through about 5 dwarves this morning before I got a handle on the situation. Go Crocs!

Two of my founding members have died trying to retrieve something. And my dwarves keep trying to get at the dead founding members. How do I stop them so they don't get killed by the carp?

Generally, I carved out about 6 burial chambers during the winter of the first year of this fort. The walls are all smoothed out, while the burial chamber of my current leader is nice and engraved, with a few gem set items stored here and there. with a population of 15, I don't think there will be any major need.

So, it's that time of year/day again. You've either had somebody die, or in the process of dieing and fatally bleeding (I had a dwarf once bleed out from spring to winter. It sucked.) How are you going to bury him? You can't just leave him out to rot (Though, that's just me.)Generally, I already have burial coffins marked out in nice underground tombs equipped with stone coffins. Other people simply toss them into graveyards, though this causes dwarves to tantrum, because, if someone just tossed your mom in a hole in front yard, what would you do? But, anyhow, how do you bury the dead?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Simple defences are the best ones
« on: August 18, 2008, 10:09:33 pm »
Big pumping systems and flood corridors are not 'simple defenses'.

Just have marksdwarves, a few tiles of fortifications, and a door.  Lock the door and the invaders will stand around out front getting shot until they are all dead.

Actually, the traps are really very simple in design. My water trap actually consisted of a floodgate, cistern, and a switch. Anyone who busted in would be drowned, and the water would drain into a cistern below. Lava traps are also very simple in design. A pump, a tunnel, a floodgate and a switch, and you suddenly have the cure-all. Somethings-Awful's trap was a 7/7 magma trap that followed over the water river and came spewing out entrances, was as about as complex as my water trap. If you have to raise the lava up Z-levels, it becomes more complicated of course, but it's all simple and straight forward.

I suppose it could be possible if the leader had a son with the traits of his father and became of a leader by hierarchy. But, as the game progressed, higher level nobles would appear, so he would be regulated to Mayor at best. I have also noticed that two other pairs have become romantically involved(Immigrants of course).

Whenever I recieve too many nobles, I send them to the "Uber Fun Club", I.E. a magma-flood capable room.
