DF Suggestions / Re: Expansion of the Use of Books
« on: March 10, 2012, 01:24:58 pm »
I like the sound of this. Perhaps start schooling for children while we are at it. Make the read academic books until they are twelve.
Only if they're children of nobles.

As for the baby, apparently it was infected as it died.  It came back as a ghostly were-goat dwarf baby.
Need pictures.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Necromancy Stories.

Hint: Kill Hydra. Raise hydra. You now have yourself something that I would like to call a "tank". Or Seige engine.
Or a siege tank.

Does anyone know if demons can be resurrected?

DF General Discussion / Re: Realistic magma

I think this thread should have been titled "realistic lava." I think magma in confined spaces would be a tad more dangerous than this.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: How to Survive
« on: February 16, 2012, 11:41:56 pm »
I agree with the OP if by armor you mean living armor. You must always bring meatshields. Many, many meatshields. Become a necromancer for reusable meatshields.

Ranged combat is deadly again, which means you can't roleplay Beowulf anymore.

I don't feel like classifying this version in terms of good/bad, whatever. It feels more like a preview of DF 2012 to me. With worldgen being dramatically slower the longer it runs, with certain sites in adv mode being unplayable laggy (capitol cities in longer world-gens), and most of all save-game failure or corruption being rampant both on save, retire, abandon, and crumble.. It's like you can play for a bit, get a taste of the new features, but you shouldn't get attached.

I do like a lot of the new features, don't get me wrong, but I'm happiest with it if I consider it like a demonstration of new features and not a version that I'm going to do anything much with. Really looking forward to a fix for the major crashes and save corruption, then I'll really get into it.
I genned 125 years and haven't had a single crash or bug, aside from the harmless book duplicating thing.

The good:
Everything. I love every new change to adventure mode. Necro powers are gloriously overpowered and immensely fun. Ranged weapons are fun again.

The bad:
Lack of large garrisons to defeat. Having 50 zombie pets isn't as fun as it can be. Throwing (at least with bolts/arrows) is still overpowered and is more powerful than ranged weapons due to lack of a reload time.

The ugly:
A mid week release means I am not doing as much work as I should be. :'(

This version isn't ever going to get old.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Please Don't - Difficulty
« on: February 15, 2012, 07:42:49 pm »
Encounter rate is an immersion shattering level of high, but I think it's going to be wonky until we get to the army arc and have entities actually traveling around the map.

I think the real problem here is that demigods are too weak if anything, but as Toady stated, it's a temporary placeholder for a better system.

As of now, enjoy your roguelike with gratuitous sprinkles of fun. If you think this is difficult, there are plenty of other roguelikes you can try to get a new perspective on things.

An army of caged creatures/goblins to fight the HFS and beat them. Then colonize hell.

DF General Discussion / Re: DF's Tone
« on: February 04, 2012, 09:20:29 pm »
I think what you guys are getting at is the tone of DF is: high-realism with a hint of heroism and fantasy thrown in. And that contrasts with DnD's tone of high-fantasy heroism, with no regard for realism.

DF General Discussion / Re: If You Could Choose One Thing

Making EVERYTHING moddable. If nothing else, it would accelerate development time.
That's cheating! You've gamed this thread to give yourself the ability to change "everything" about the game. Go again please.

I'd have animals be a lot harder to find and far more rare. It's a bit ridiculous that you can start a peasant, walk into a forest, and club hundreds of little (and big) critters around you.

116
I'm talking about fortress mode...

I rarely play adventure mode...
It still applies. Maybe your fort will naturally draw demigod immigrants when rich enough. Maybe you can attract enough big baddies to train up your peasants to pure awesome status.

117
I think the reason you're not liking adventure mode is due to how weak the current demigods are. Demigods, as chlidren of the gods, should ideally be able to launch goblins into orbit with mauls. Instead, they are only slightly beefed up peasants. I hope that this gets fixed when toady rewrites adventurer roles.

Also, a better way to accomplish your goal is to make characters level to legendary and past only when they fight legendary enemies. Skills past legendary should give unproportionally large bonuses. So the effect is: as the amount of megabeasts dwindles with time, (and you enter a mundane age) so does the number of superlegendary actors.

DF Suggestions / Re: Mercury: The Forgotten Element
« on: November 19, 2011, 11:12:51 am »
Mercury seems heavily anachronistic, seeing as the tech cap is ~1400s.
Mercury wouldn't really alter the feel of the game from fantasy to mundane though. It could have cool applications in alchemy and increase the coolness/breadth of the stuff you can make as an alchemist. I'm all for the addition of mercury.

119
you could essentially power up to godhood
ok vegeta

I think not. There is precious little humor in this game.

The Pratchett Belief SystemTM isn't inherently humorous though.

I could see it really working well with DF.  Say a volcano erupts and kills a megabeast, would people begin worshipping it?  Could the volcano ascend to Godhood?
You're right. The word I wanted to use is absurd. Discworld is just a collection of absurdities; these absurdities are not humorous on their own, but humorous when viewed together. Taking an absurdity out of a discworld novel and putting it into DF would make it look seriously out of place. I think that the horror genre would fare far better and would create a much cooler atmosphere for the worlds.

Caveat: the random name generator would make Pratchett proud.
