DF General Discussion / Re: DF Talk Topic Vote #8: SCIENCES!
« on: February 24, 2010, 11:06:55 pm »
Biology, Chemistry, Physics.

Biology Q.Qing:

So... are there any long-range plans to introduce microorganisms? Perhaps they're [hidden] entities that can cause all sorts of pleasantries? Or is the plan to only exclusively include contact poisons?

Does a creature's brain take damage when it is asphyxiating or is clinical death the only possible outcome?

Is it possible to generate a creature that instead of oxygen requires some exotic substance to subsist? How do magma men/firemen get energy? () How can they survive contact with magma?

Do dwarves have super-dwarvenly tough livers? Are their beards just masses of smoothER that converts alcohol to gravy?

DF Suggestions / Ridiculous Mechanical Artifacts
« on: February 05, 2010, 02:06:11 pm »
I recall reading this story and it mentioned a mechanical prosthetic limb and I thought that this was absolutely incredible. Wouldn't it be great to make all possessed mechanic inventions remind you why you built a mechanic's workshop in the first place?

Examples:

Bolt Thrower
Description: A weapon that utilizes the Lorentz force to accelerate metallic ammunition.

Ever-spinning Serrated Saw Disc
Description: A permanently-spinning circular saw-on-a-stick.

Philosopher's Centrifuge
Description: Gain Y metal/chemical substance inherent to the rock for every 100 crushed rocks.

Dirigible
Description: A blimp filled with * gas.
Maximum takeoff weight: xxx
Maximum speed: xxx

etc...

Thoughts? Ideas? Hate speech?

DF Suggestions / Re: Tiles for each Character

Why not remember where everything is in the meanwhile? Label different areas with the hotkey function/label function and you'll find yourself having a completely different experience. If units are the problem, try using the (U)nit screen. It's fairly easy to just check what something is with the K/Q/T buttons.

Try using F1 for your gate. F2 for your farm. F3 for your stockpiles. F4 for your crafting workshops. F5 for your metal ops. Then remember that all of your craftsdwarf workshops are in the top right corner, mason workshops in the top left, etc...

Hopefully you'll get used to looking at the Matrix like Cypher.

Other Games / Re: Any reason to go for a gaming PC instead of a console?
« on: December 15, 2009, 05:19:08 pm »
Interestingly, I'm not looking forward to SC2, because I'm one of the people who label the whole "Blizzard RTS" thing as a "clickfest". I'm very casually looking forward to another SC2, Supreme Commander 2, but only out of interest - in what other ways can they mangle a perfectly good design used in Total Annihilation? It seems to me Chris Taylor decided to throw himself into experiments without recreating the original success first. Supreme Commander, for all its scale and variety, turned out to be another Starcraft, but with larger maps.
Ah, if you think that SC is a clickfest, you should try Dune.

You like progressquest/moviegames. LOL!

It would be fairly difficult to trump SC2. The multimillion dollar project that has a single aim of placating the hungry korean progamers who want a real competitive game that is fun to play and watch. This is different from the TF2 generation of games that have been aimed at the "casual" crowd who only spend one or two hours a week on games.

QuakeLive is an excellent FPS that tests all of your aiming skills and your brainsense of timing. (tracking, snap reflex, snap precision, variable prediction timing)

The only games I am looking forward to are starcraft2 and natural selection2.

I think you should reconsider Sowelu. The single-player is completely worthless either way. In the revolutionary fun mode called multiplayer, everyone uses built-in VOIP/TeamSpeak. It really is worth it if you like organized gaming.

( Voice acting is the dumbest thing to get worked up about. :-\ )

Can I run it on my,

AMD x4 Phenom 2.5Ghz
6Gbs Ram DDR3
9800GT?

Yea, you can run it without a doubt. You won't be able to run it on high though. You would've really been better off with a core2 and a better videocard. It also doesn't like more than 4 gigs of ram.

I spent a bit of time researching, but I haven't found any information on equipment standards of the time, training standards, or general moral. So, what should I change, or what should I try and do better, besides researching the scene? I'd rather rather keep it inaccurate to reality any way.
CoD is not a very good source of historically accurate information.

Sounds like you/"HACKER" is a SA goon. I doubt your account got hacked, you're probably really stupid and you gave your password out to someone/used a password similar to one you used somewhere else.

It was a bitter cold Winter night in Stalingrad, 1942.
IT WAS A DARK AND STORMY NIGHT. Most awful intro ever.

F-

I liked the part about the tall guy built like an ammunition truck. Other than that, stop playing CoD.

Not even alongside the more 'subtle/fantastic' magics?

I can see this as being the lowest common form of it, as artifact (enchantments) would be far more impressive.
"Not even the measely firebolt?" "What about an ice blast?" "No storm wind gust for 5d20damages?"

Nope.

Although I would like to think that a wizard noble would be available in the future, I doubt that he'd work in the way you'd imagine. He'd maybe do stuff like turn the river into beer or get angered at having a mandate ignored and turn your miners into various cattle/summon flying zombie carp.

DF Suggestions / Re: Elven tree spikers
« on: August 10, 2009, 01:37:46 am »
I see what your saying but it might be more fitting if the elves came and woke the trees so that if a dwarf comes along with an axe he leaves with less limbs than he started with.
... Or more trophies for the trophy room in the case of legendary woodcutters.

Just wait until fortress dwarves gain the ability to set fire to trees. Elves will be completely balled in dense woodlands. (it's like a magma flood, but with less effort)

Sorry for the hijack.

The tile should also have beautiful, innocent mermaid migrating every year that can be bread in captivity for their valuable bones.

Breading mermaids for their valuable bones. Yes, it's what it sounds like.

Settle on a tile that has all of the folowing:

*A frozen frozen sinister tundra called The Thousand Needles of Eternal Torture
*Nearby the sea The Pregnant Sea Of Zombie Wales,
*The glacier The Looming Terror starting in the adjutant worldmap tile,
*A human city of Milksugars.
*A goblin tower
*A chasm full of GCS in
*A freezing mountain
*A cold forest, a magma pipe
*An underground river.
*A haunted desert
*A haunted swamp
*A Terrifying Volcano with skeletal fire imps
*Tropical wetlands
*A 30+ z waterfall
*A Terrifying glacier
*HFS
*A cave full of kobolds that guards the volcano

... I think someone has been messing with the worldgen parameters.

Don't forget an iron ore and the beautiful skeletal eagles, remarkable for their talons. Your favorite animal.

Other Games / Elements: Free online MTG clone
« on: August 02, 2009, 01:31:55 pm »
http://www.elementsthegame.com/

Just found this little gem while casually strolling through something awful forums. It's basically a Magic clone with less cards, no monster damage blocking and rigged strategerie. It's horrendously unbalanced. The two viable competitive decks right now are poison and aether/entropy. If you think the gold system is annoying, wait until you see how bad the card lottery is. Try it out though, it's fun for at least a little while.
