Redstone really needs a dedicated blocks for some things... like an inverter and a booster so you don't have to wrap your head around those torch configurations.
What? You want it to be easier? What kind of dwarf are you? Pff...
Inverters are ridiculously easy.

I prefer the second setup because you need less redstone. You just connect redstone dust to a block and put a torch at another side of the block, either on top of the block or to the side of it. If it's to the side, you need to connect the torch to the block.
And a booster has nothing to do with redstone circuits. You can make a minecart booster without a single redstone dust.
Oh sure, there are very complicated gates, like ones where you can actually store information. Like, you press a button and even when the button gets deactivated again, there's still an "ON" signal stored somewhere, i.e. sequential logic. I really don't understand how those work. But normal minecart tracks with multiple stations really only need inverters or maybe an AND or OR gate.
Edit: Actually, the most basic memory setup is pretty easy to understand. All you need to know is how inverters work which is not that hard.
Adders, however, are annoyingly difficult to understand.
