DF General Discussion / what is Toady's "countdown"?

Hey folks-

This might be common knowledge but I didn't see anything in the searches.  Toady has 1100+ items in his "countdown".  What exactly are these items?  Specific Features? Lines of code?  How does Toady quantify the work between releases exactly?

The game programmer side of me needs to know.  :)

Yes the game fights with the keyboard sometimes.  There are some bugs mentioned about this but not sure where they are.  Definitely has to do with shift-moving near the edge of maps.  The workaround fix is to ALT-TAB out of the window and ALT-TAB back in and the game is set back to rights.

I just started farming obsidian (one room not a bunch of separate channels) and this is all good stuff.  Similar to Magua except no bridges I just have a river floodgate fill the room so I still need drainage.  I might have to try that.

Anyway it should be mentioned that you don't need 7/7 magma to make an obsidian wall.  So "filling" a channel or room with magma literally isn't a requirement. This is shown in a Magua screen shot but I figured someone should explicitly mention it.

DF General Discussion / Best settings for 1024x768

Hi folks-

I play vanilla DF 40c and I set the 800x600 window size with the correct font size and it looks nice, but I would like to make the window bigger.  My desktop is 1024x768 so I was hoping to make gridsize and windodwsize work nicely but I'm having a bit of trouble making it look good.

Anybody have settings examples for 1000x750 window size or something similar?

Hmm... common knowledge you say?  I didn't think about the connection between profession and weapon.  But now that you say it, it explains how my Tree Chopper turned into an Axedwarf after dispatching enough surprised goblin snatchers outside...

DF Gameplay Questions / miner turned wrestler and the pick of doom

Hello folks-

Noob question here couldn't find a post about it.  I had a miner and made him a wrestler.  He has no weapon selected, just armor and shield.  Well a year later I find a bloody recruit lying dead on the floor.  I suspect weapon usage but I have all wrestlers.  I checked all their inventory and the ex-miner still had his pick.  I set it to Dump in the inventory screen and it looks like he took it and threw it down my fake-chasm I use for stones.  I un-forbid it so someone would go get it out of the pit and later on I saw him wielding a pick again (I assume it's the same pick).  So now I have it set to "Forbid" but he's still holding it so I'm not sure if that is sufficient.

So what's the proper way to unequip a dwarf and make sure he doesn't do anything like that again?  And how do I get a dwarf to change their clothes if they have X(shirt)X type wear n' tear on them?  Thanks.

Time to have everyone with no job fish for turtles, process one, and forbid all the food in stockpile so someone eats it.  I just had to do this with one of my crazy dwarfs stuck on a workshop with no shells.

I hope this gets fixed with the next release, since some squad fixes are being done?  Btw, separate barracks for training sounds awesome!  But I feel like speedy trained legendary wrestlers is an exploit and keeps me from 40d.

It seems to me that 40d made champion wrestlers a lot easier to make?  Because I have 40c and I have yet to get a champion even though they spar all the time.  Eventually they'll get there I assume, but not at the speed others are saying with 40d...

I have a camel corpse in a cage I bought from the pointy eared devils.  I've tried a whole bunch of things but can't figure out how to get it out of the cage and thrown out so I can use a nice new empty cage.  Do I need to hook it up to a mechanism or can it just be opened and contents emptied (and thrown out!).  Thanks.

Well an ambush came so I guess I was just antsy in the pantsy.  Only a few losses but I'd like to change that to NO losses.  :)

Ooooh nice I hope there's a seige.  If one doesn't come soon I'm going to get majorly bored and will have to try some insane building project.

I have no problem killing this dumb goblin emissary, except I don't know how.  Is there a way to set him as hostile to the fort?  He's probably a spy for the other goblins!!

Oh and a problem with my goblin-squisher (tried it on an insane dwarf wandering about): no items are dropped and everything is destroyed.  Bummer.  There goes my main export - narrow giant spider silk socks.  I'll have to turn it into a drowning chamber or some other lucrative thing.

Hello folks-

It's been about 4 years since I've had a Goblin ambush.  They used to come once or twice a year right after the caravan.  Like clockwork.  My fort has been growing pretty steadily and has good wealth I think.

Now right after I built my first ever goblin-squishing machine (think car crusher) there are no more goblins to try it on.  Is it possible I've worn out the civilization and there's nobody left?  The last ambush I received had a lot of goblins and I lost 1/3 my pop from it.  I have yet to get a seige.

Any ideas?

Oh and there's another goblin civilization listed, and their emissary comes once a year to ask me what I want to trade.  He's currently come with a dwarven caravan.  But I never see a goblin caravan coming for trade
