All good stuff thank you sir!

Since Bombadil is one of the few unanswered mysteries of Middle Earth there is a lot of conjecture, of course.  I always thought of him as a force of nature.  Part of Middle-Earth itself, constant, and not subject to the weakness of mortality in any of its forms.  It's like trying to quantify how powerful the ocean is.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Children of the Fort.

I too have a problem with too many children, I have the popcap at 80 and I ended up (through various military failures) with an adult population of 50 and child population of 70.  All they do is drink and party, much like human children I suppose.

I believe in Tolkein's Hurin/Turin story there were hill dwarves which slept on stone beds and enjoyed it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: how to mark specific goblins for pitting
« on: January 22, 2013, 10:05:57 pm »
Well the idea of mass pitting is that the goblins don't pass by the populace, causing them grief.  I don't know if that is an unfound theory or not I didn't want to risk it.  I did find a ton of blood and several goblin corpses in my main hallway, when some archers decided to practice on them.  It might have also been during a caravan where the guards got frisky, I did not see it happen.

The ordering of them is helpful I will definitely use it if true.  Right down to marking the name of the first goblin that gets caught in a siege so I can delineate the buggers.

That is too bad we can't mark the ones already trapped.

DF Gameplay Questions / how to mark specific goblins for pitting
« on: January 22, 2013, 03:39:02 pm »
I hid this in another thread but it went unanswered so I'll try on my own.

I have a sweet pit where I throw disarmed goblins down a 3Z depth chute and they fall down stunned and then get hacked to pieces by my recruits.  I follow the guidelines on the wiki for mass pitting but I feel I must be missing something.

In the i,P menu I see a big list of ALL the caged animals on the map, which includes goblins I have in the Animal zone right above the pit, and the goblins waiting in the traps.  I can't tell the difference between the two in the lookup and my people are bringing disarmed goblins from the traps throughout my fortress, upsetting the children.

I tried forbidding but that seems to just forbid the traps/cages and not the contents inside them.

How do I make it so I will only Pit the goblins outside the actual floor traps?  Thanks for any help!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Clothing Issue

How do you all quickly make sets of clothes?  I go through the manager but it is still tedious to set 30 of this and 30 of that.  Is there an easier way?

DF General Discussion / Re: How did YOU find Dwarf Fortress?
« on: January 11, 2013, 02:54:36 am »
I saw an article in "Games for Windows" (wish I still had it) that showed Tarn and Zach playing Go, with a giant backdrop of the world in ASCII.  My Rogue/Nethack/Angband roots suddenly woke up and got excited at the sheer ambition of this wonderful game.
Here is a link to some scans: http://www.tigsource.com/2007/06/29/games-for-windows-magazine-dwarf-fortress/

I remember seeing the download page with the new "3D" version but it was recommended on the very same page to STAY AWAY FROM IT so I started on 2D.  I actually did not get good enough at 2D to even get to the Magma or Candy.  I was really clueless and my biggest success was making a floodgate farm and plenty of booze, just before a band of goblins came and wiped me out.  Lots of cave-ins in those days, as well, which is something I kind of miss.

The forgiving nature of farming in 3D really allowed my fortresses to survive more than a couple years.  Hee hee!

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mass Pitting System
« on: December 31, 2012, 10:25:13 pm »
I have a question to add myself ...

When I select 'P' pit information to dump the goblins I see all the animals/cages and not just the ones in that stockpile.  The wiki says to "disable" the other animal stockpiles but I did that and I still see them.  How do I just get the cages on the stockpile near the hatches?  Thanks.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Mass Pitting System

Hello!

I would like to add something to this topic:
Since version .11 I have had the same problem ("inappropriate building"). My "Pit" Zone is on the same level as the stockpile and the holes.
In the versions prior it worked perfectly.
What I did was remove the hatches, and then my dwarfs threw the prisoners down the holes again. The only problem is, that without hatches your little Urists tend to get frightened by the victims they just threw down somewhere (just 1 z-level in my design).

I am not sure what the core of the problem is (sorry to be of no help there), but removing the hatches worked for me.
I have 34.11 and I did not have problems with hatch covers in my current fort.  My pit was defined before the hatch covers were actually built there, maybe that is the difference?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Military failure

I just want to add this happened to me just now.  I had 2 squads, 8 random melee dwarves and 8 marksdwarves.  When the seige came in 3rd year I was unprepared, without much metal and all leather armor.  About 12 gobbos with iron equip came in and slaughtered my army and everyone else.  Next I'm going to try out a bunch of suggestions here.  Thanks!

General Discussion / Re: Documentary on Dwarf Fortress?
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:44:43 am »
Eh. I'd rather it focused on the games with more depth than these, to be honest. "Indie games" =/= Platformers, I see nothing there that I was wowed by, so I don't see why I'd care about a documentary covering of the process to make it.

Dwarf Fortress, on the other hand...
As a bedroom coder I still dream of breaking out and selling something I make.  It's interesting to see how other people (with far more talent than I, alright) get it done.  Besides, it's not about the product as much as it is about the people making the product.

I think DF is enough of a modern phenomenon that it would make a great documentary of its own: the scope of the game, the complexity of its mechanics already at 33% completion, creativity of the fanbase, forums, meetups, developer transparency, living off of the charity of your fans, Tarn and Zach's lifestyle.  It's all there.  Of course it could also point to some of the sandbox games inspired by DF (minecraft, goblin camp, and others).  I mean, it caught the eye of the freakin New York Times!
