Update: Okay I found that "guy" using special clairvoyant powers (dfhack reveal) in an underwater tunnel. Without any way to dive long ways from the nearest river without drowning - only vampire or necro afaik - he is impossible to reach.

However, stomped the floor really hard (dfhack tiletype), so it opened up and got an access way.

You need to walk in them, using alt-move, you hold alt and press the direction of the river, and it will give you some options... Please, I ask of you others experienced players to not tell him which is the "right" one.

Well my question was worded badly, I know how to cross rivers, it just gets old having to pause travel mode for this. The game knows that I know how to do it and my dwarf is a legendary swimmer, so why can't I just travel over them?

Is a necromancer tower guaranteed to have a book of life and death? My map only has one, and I could not find something like that, only worthless books, double checked list with Legends mode.

 Why is the necromancer itself friendly to me? (while her corpses attack?)

A dwarf with an "(un)important" task shall not take this task serious enough to abort attending a party, which spawns over several weeks.

And then get a few week full of sleep!

Then spend another week or two drinking!

Such tasks of non-importance are:
* a broker that is requested to a caravan, especially if said caravan carries a tamed couple of tiercel peregrines of opposite sex.
* a mason requested to build a wall that completes the fortress defense.
* a mechanic requested to link a lever to the bridge to close off a dangerous cavern.
* a butcher requested to butcher some animal, so another dwarf with a strange mood does not get mad.

I generated a hugh world, made a fort with a complete set of masterwork adamantine stuff and fully automatic danger room only to discover that all dwarf civilisations start on the south polar cap and there is an endless ocean to the main land, including the awesome fort waiting for an adventurer to claim its stuff. Any corrings of that ocean above ground is impossible due to ice, at least without hacking in a flyers skills. Even then I couldn't since ice melting created so much CPU heat, I couldn't get there in any sane time. Rage deleted that world :(

Is there a way to get the quest text from a quest afterwards? And I don't know who gave it to me anymore. Someone send me to kill some criminal mind in some town (supposevely an olm?) no idea, not in the castle cellar and there are no walkable sewers. (however reveal shows some dead olm skeletons down there in an underground river)

Also is there a way to travel over rivers, ones I know I can swim, and the game knows I can swim, why must I stop on every river?

Is there a way to find forgotten beasts? I killed all titans, according to legends there should be a good dozend of FB but I'm not going to run aimless through caverns.

Maybe possible with dfhack. Teleports the caravan into the caverns as soon as it spawns on the map. But thats only a potential script, that has not been done yet.

The wagons wont spawn if there is no 3 tile connection to the depot.

3. Since water pressure does not go through diagonal tiles its pretty easy to make a flood safe reservoir at any depth, consult the wiki. 

However two hints with that: 1. keep a floodgate close to the water source if out of any reason you want to shut off refill. I usually do this because of FPS out of some reason vertical tubes water falling down never seem to fully fill up for me.  2. pave roads on any horizontal lines out of the tube. Since after first use the floor will be muddy, and if you breached a cavern a tree might otherwise grow there, clogging up the water flow.

I thought the aquifer simply would not be there when you embark on it while they are turned off.

I think there is no way you can get (as in convince) another person to play a particular game.

Just tell him that you like it and what you enjoy, and if because of that he wants to give it a try himself fine, is not, fine too.

People are so different and DF works for a particular kind of these.

But, that said, the tileset has ruined my imagination of some things. For example, I remember all my statues as dwarves stranding there facing the camera (because that's what the tiles are) and giant cave spiders as kind of non-threatening brown lumps, and Voracious cave crawlers as SATANIC PURPLE LUMPS OF INFINITE TEETH. And all dogs are the same brown dog lol.

I take issue on the vanilla ASCII-set. The onomatopoeic use of characters completely messes up my imagination. For example, I'd imagine the wells in my fortress to be square. But the use of 'o' ruins that. Also the ANSI-colors dwarf fortress uses to colorize things, a sacrilege, they go fully against the colors I'd imagine.

DF should only use numbers for everything, no onomatopoeics for anything! Or completely unrelated, unknown characters arranged as randomly as possible. It  should look like this, http://i.imgur.com/nebD0dd.gif preferably without that stylish green.

no didn't help either. no way of crossing this without resorting to having to find a cavern entrance. hopefully. Also I cannot spawn a new dwarf adventurer. All of them start on this subcontinent.
