DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Are crossbows still overpowered?
« on: June 02, 2012, 02:54:53 pm »
Wood or bone bolts might as well be paintballs now, I can tell you that much. Overall my experience is that they're not as good at penetrating armour, but when they do score a hit it's much more likely to cause serious injury now that the damage model takes ligaments and tendons into account, so I suppose it evens out.

Those aren't knuckle dusters, they're dual-wielded trench spikes!

DF Modding / Re: Secondary weapons: can the AI be changed?

I have my Bayonetted Crossbows use the PIKE skill, since a crossbow is so awkward, I'd figure all you could do was stab.

Likewise, except mine use the speardwarf skill so I can have my marksdwarf squads perform bayonet drills with training spears. They also have a blunt attack as well, though the AI doesn't use it very often.

You do realise that within mere hours of a release that introduces miasmic cheese farts, players would be coming up with ways to use them to kill goblins, right? Nobody wants to read about weaponised miasmic cheese farts on the forums.

Also, I really hope for your sake that you're not smoking that spliff at the computer, because I doubt stale marijuana residue is any better for its internals than stale tobacco residue. (Or a mixture of the two if you smoke the stuff British style.)

Does this work with the latest version of dwarf fortress?

Right now it doesn't really work with any version, unless you want to copy and paste Hugo's amended raws manually. Give me about a week?

Ammo with more then one type of attack?

Is that actually possible? I was planning to multiply the EDGE dimension of a small gunstone by six, divide the penetration depth by the same amount and reduce the SHOOT_FORCE.

and that is crappy living settings. Worse then mine when I got to go to college...

It's not so bad actually: I've got access to a shared kitchen and living room and my room itself is actually quite big. It's just that this house is a hundred years old and mains electricity was an afterthought.

looking forward to the release loved this mod for 31.25

Glad to hear it. Unfortunately, testing has been somewhat held up by a minor logistical issue.

The good news is, I think I've figured out a method of making shotgun ammunition that sort of works.

Life Advice / Re: College Computer Choice

It helps to have a small PC if you're going to be moving a lot, even if you don't actually use it when on the move.

Also, re upgrading your current laptop: forget the idea. The internals of a laptop are shaped to fit the case (or vice-versa) so you can't realistically replace anything except the ram and drives.

Not only that, but you'll almost certainly have to junk the entire machine if a key component like the screen or the keyboard quits working, and you'll waste three hours of your life every time you want to clean the dust off the chip fan. (On the other hand, depending what sort of engineering you're planning to study, maybe that'd be valuable practical experience in what not to do.)

My advice is to buy a cheap netbook for note-taking in class and getting work done on your assignments while still enjoying the fresh air -one of those seven-inch Chinese ones would probably do- and sink the bulk of the money into a good desktop; if you keep it in good repair, the latter should stay serviceable for years after you graduate.

I think personal effects are only stored in a tomb if the dwarf in question is unmarried, otherwise it becomes the property of their spouse.

235
Actually I think this is part of the problem. Right now, dwarves can't actually do anything to mourn their friend and family other than tantruming. If the mythic personality rewrite comes up, I hope they'll be able to just seek out a friend and cry on their shoulder or something.

Theoretically they can do that already, though for some odd reason it's authority figures like the mayor that get shouted at and/or cried on. (Makes sense for industrial accidents or death in battle, I suppose.) The real problem, I feel, is that there's not much middle ground between merely being very unhappy and plunging right over the edge into violence.

Hugo, I owe you a beer. And a mention in the credits, because this is at least on a par with Acperience's contribution.

Sincerest thanks!

BTW ... the gunpowder 10000 is alot of gunpowder (PRODUCT_DIMENSION multipies product amount) donno if your goal was 66/67 things of gunpowerder or you acaully want 10000 made.

It was only supposed to make ten bags of it, and each bag should have been enough for ten stacks of cartridges.

Anyway, thanks for the help. I think I can fix it now. I also think I've got the ammunition issue sussed as well now; Find/Replace screwed up more stuff than I'd realised.

DF Modding / Re: [MODDING] REACTIONS QUESTIONS THREAD
« on: May 26, 2012, 10:30:30 am »
So, is this thread open for questions yet? I'm not sure if it's a change made in .34 or if I screwed up royally somewhere, but I've horribly broken the Black Powder Firearms mod somehow and I don't know why. (Details in the thread.)

239
Dear God of Random Numbers,

Sending no fewer than twelve hunters to the fortress I've using to test the Black Powder Firearms mod would have been more helpful if the mod wasn't horribly, horribly broken for no apparent reason, but currently feels rather like you're mocking me. It's also creating some logistical issues; I haven't even been able to plant half the crops I have seeds for lest we run out of larder space, and if I foist much more of the surplus upon the merchants I'll have their home civ preferring charges of attempted murder by cholesterol poisoning!

All the same, thanks for the four fey moods in genuinely useful skills and an "ambush" that consisted of about five goblins, all of whom were clobbered by the caravan guards without trouble while my so-called militia were buggering about trying to find their armour.

Yours,

An Avatar of Armok and Novice Modder.

Remember the thread where someone pointed out there's a giant, washed out "Bay 12" in the terran base in SC2? That could have been written off as a coincidence but I'm becoming more convinced it was a subtle nod towards the site.

The name "Bay 12" is itself a reference; to one of the Alien Trilogy films, I think. Might've been a reference to that instead.
