74. I will refrain from moving to any settlement with a volcano or magma pipe until it has survived long enough to become a barony.
75. If it becomes impossible to uphold Rule #74 and still earn a decent living, I will endeavour to arrive dressed exclusively in silk and/or leather, no matter how ridiculous I may look as a result.

Orders - Refuse Dwarves dump Other will send vermin corpses and food that's spoiled to a garbage dump activity zone. I generally have it tossed into the same stretch of river where fishing takes place.

Dear everyone,

Would someone kindly enlighten me as to why our outpost liaison's dead body is lying at the bottom of the newly excavated drinking-water cistern? I have my suspicions, but fortunately for you I was looking the other way when it happened. The Ministry of Trade are not going to be best pleased about this.
And if you haven't cleaned the blood out of there by the time the brook thaws then it's your own lookout.

Yours,

Your bewildered and rather annoyed Avatar of Armok

28. If I get struck by a brilliant idea for an artefact, I will write down a list of exactly what is required and pass it on to the broker and manager. If not everything is available, I will make a start on it with the materials available and add shells, gems etc as and when they become available.

Wait, you get alerts for that?  I just see "Urist McNewMother has given birth to a son!" with no announcement before that.  Perhaps I need to alter my announcement settings...
Sorry. I meant that eventually an update will enable such announcements; it's mentioned in the devlog somewhere.

How about trying to run a fort without access to magma? I've always thought it's something everyone should try at least once.

Eventually you'll get alerted when a dwarf is expecting a child, making it possible to take the mother off the squad for a while.

And this can have an extremely satisfying upside. Back in 40d, I'd formed a small fortress guard but hadn't finished equipping them yet, and one of its newer recruits was a young mother. I can only assume that from the angle he approached from, the goblin babysnatcher who attempted to make off with her two week-old baby was unable to see that she was wearing a shortsword. His expression was apparently so entertaining that the dwarves left his head in the nearby tree it landed in.

Haha i can just imagine getting a message saying, "A piece of granite has been stolen"....so?
The mental image accompanying "A rhesus macaque has stolen a coke!" makes me chuckle as well.

How much RAM have you got? I had this problem pretty regularly until I upgraded mine.

Going mad from boredom and loneliness when my Internet connection craps out.

Don't know about kobolds, but raccoons or monkeys will occasionally steal bricks of coke or charcoal.

Well, I dunno about you lot, but somehow the thought of my dwarves charging into battle wearing plate or chainmail and nothing else makes me wince slightly. Think of the chafing!

DF Suggestions / Re: Tailors and clothes repair
« on: February 02, 2011, 05:43:07 pm »
Well, why would you want to go from XX to X, when what you really want is everything back to full?

A single unit of cloth is enough to make an entirely new dress, so why make patches that improve clothing in small increments when you can create an entirely new dress, and have the dwarf upgrade.  In order to make repairing an old set of clothes make sense, it should be significantly "cheaper" to do than making a whole new one.
To that end, why not have the option for dwarves to mend their own clothing if they can't afford to buy a replacement and/or hire a tailor or seamstress? The decision to repair or replace should be based on the value of the clothes and whether or not a dwarf is attached to said item, and the price of getting something repaired professionally ought to be about the same as a clothesmaker's piece-rate.

So what you've got in mind is for military dwarves given orders to patrol a route or defend a burrow should get a modest bonus to their Observation roll for being specifically ordered to watch for intruders? That's not a bad idea at all, actually.

I think he'd have a decent claim on the whole of the content being protected. I mean, it's one thing to throw in plump helmets (or any other singular thing) as a reference, but it's another to, say, copy every plant and animal wholesale.
Excepting cave creatures, most of the edible crops and a few miscellaneous things like beak dogs or fluffy wamblers, the flora and fauna featured in DF are either real or from classical mythology and thus public domain. If it contains any of the above if and when this game is available for download, that's a different matter, but until then he's bending the rules a little but not doing any actual harm.
