DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Most BS Deaths
« on: February 22, 2010, 08:22:13 am »
with a play now character i was well on my way to ruling the world with my chosen weapon, a stolen rope reed shoe.

i was killing wolves with it when one of the wolves i had knocked over grappled me with its legs and broke my arm, then choked me to death while the other wolves wailed on me or vomited and passed out. it seems that in the version i was playing, when a 4 legged animal has fallen over, its legs are suddenly available to wrestle with.

i had another adventurer get wrestled by a horse in a human town once after it had been knocked over. it was non fatal but the mental image was very odd.

also first time i ever played i somehow did not know how to swim up.

hmm, my memories of when i researched this with the aim of creating awesome anti hfs traps was -

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

cavein dust will knock them unconcious, and allow you to cage them. which is harder to do then it sounds. they can make for some really entertaining anti goblin measures, and you can sell them to the elves for profit. sof with their burn-anything-one-tile-away can be used for some pretty neat stuff. getting any of them chained up may be a challenge though. i use them as animal disposal, cautously, as horses, cows and camels can kill anything if there are enough of them.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: I am so excited for the next version!

I'm looking forward to the hilarious bugs the new version will introduce.  I don't know what they'll be yet, but I'm sure there will be some good ones.

yeah, the bugs will be great. ever since "dwarves clean cosmetic layers" was added in, ive been eagerly anticipating the consequences of a dwarf, perhaps an injured dwarf, getting confused over what his "cosmetic layers" are and attempting to clean out the inside of his intestines or kidneys. i can imagine some interesting things happening when an external layer is torn off, and the one underneath becomes the new external cosmetic layer. im sure that problem is going to appear somewhere, if only in a mod. imagine some poor dwarf in a hospital bed with a nurse attempting to hold him down and get at his innards for cleaning purposes.

apart from that, im specially looking forwards to the new military/healthcare in relation to exploring the new underground with all its awesomeness. i went back and played the 2d version, and man, it was harder and in some ways more interesting then the newer versions. i hope that feeling of progress as you dig deeper and find more stuff is recaptured, as currently the underground is a little boring and once you have a massive fort with the hfs defeated and sieges on farm status, you run out of things to do.

the first fort i made that was really huge and had hfs had a mayor with this trait. she was my original expedition leader/broker, and i had her legendary in like 5 different proffessions. when i released the hfs all her cats were hunting in the lower levels and got slaughtered, along with quite a few dwarves due to my miscalculations.

she tantrummed over and over again for a straight year, getting unhappy thoughts for killing dwarves who came to talk to her and a few of her remaining cats. she also took down and killed several members of the fortress guard, who were wearing steel/adamantium plate and chain and were mostly legendary wrestlers. when they finally got her chained up she finally committed suicide by attacking one of my elite military hammerdwarves, who hit her back with his adamantium hammer and turned her into chunky salsa.

she also got a fairly respectable skill in throwing, and destroyed quite a few buildings. it was quite astounding. never had a problem with her till that point, she was a great mayor, she occasionally got happy thoughts from yelling at people and never made any annoying demands.

making such dwarves into military may not be the best idea, if they do tantrum more easily and often, they are likely to cause an amazing amount of damage. an unarmed dwarf beating several trained and armoured wrestlers to death is not something i ever expected to see.

there are risks if you are trying to train a thrower though. once the mayor had killed enough of her cats and one of her friends during a tantrum she graduated to insane shortly before she got hammered.

.... new version looks like it is days or at most weeks away.

i am ever so happy.

i actually feel excited about this new release in the way i used to get excited about christmas when i was a small child. its an unfamilliar feeling.

my goodness. can you post the map seed? i would not mind checking this creature out. ive never encountered any undead except for hoary marmots, goats and the like, despite a lot of trying.

are dragons made only of bone magma proof? im guessing marksdwarves are going to be useless, as are guys with spears.

DF Modding / Re: Stonesense - Official thread -
« on: December 18, 2009, 08:12:47 am »
just popped in to say - this project is great.

ive been running it in a box above a long skinny DF window, and its great being able to sit and watch my dwarves dig out the rooms i have just designated, or run around fighting chasm creatures. having the window slaved to my dwarf fortress view is what has gotten me wanting to use stonesense, i can easily navigate around and look at exactly what i want.

even previously boring things like a dwarf assembling a workshop suddenly becomes very interesting.

so, well done.

hmmm. ive just found this thread, and just listened to the dwarf fort talk. im going to take a crack at this with superfast dwarves and kittens that give ungodly amounts of fat. i dont know how to do reactions without breaking stuff, and i have never ever made a bar of soap in dwarf fortress ever. it allways just seemed like too much trouble.

got a fresh version of df, got a world genning, getting too it right now. lets see if i can knock something out in the next few hours.

i allways imagined cloth spikes as being thick cloth starched to all hell to make an actual spike. not one that could inflict harm, but one that would be stiff and solid.

as for leather spikes, i imagine solid boiled leather, not the soft stuff they make jackets out of nowadays. im going to try drawing dwarfy clothing with starchy stuff spikes when i get up tomorrow.

i really like the military elves.

im using mayday's pack from ages ago, and my elves mostly show up as the same. how do i get your elves in there so i can see them in adventure mode, and when they invade my fort?

i chose adventure mode. reading neonivek's list of questions got me inspired, i would love to see some of them addressed if adventure mode gets chosen. it also makes me drool to think some of that is likely to end up in the game eventually.

and stop posting in morse code here. it makes my eyes bleed. and you risk inspiring the podcast crew to do something crazy like including it in the recordings.

also, to mr captaintastic, rainseeker and of course toady and threetoe, thanks for taking the time to bring these podcasts to the community. they are very addictive, i love hearing the thought processes behind a game like dwarf fortress.

i made a giant dam, lots of nice looking symetrical bedrooms and shopping areas. the entire place was getting made up for adventure mode, so a lot of the outdoors stuff is less impressively huge, as i was thinking of making it look good in the DF graphics.

link to the map archive, wherever the save went for this i had advanced forwards considerably in a lot of places.
http://mkv25.net/dfma/map-5254-friendlyworks

these are pics i took ages and ages ago with 3dwarf. as the dam was close to the map it was really hard to get a shot that showed how high it was.

getting filled -

aaaand here is a shot of the brook running completely dry, which was the case for the many in game years it took for the dam to fill up. every summer the top 2 z levels of the dam would boil away from the intense heat on the map i was on. the brook went on to flow past a goblin fortress, which would probably give them the reason for the enormous yearly attacks i was getting beyond the usual "we hate dwarfs".

does this new image viewer work for the df 40d# editions? i use them exclusively now, and i would love to get some coloured picutures of the for that goes with the dam, its mostly in bauxite.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Wild Camels have settled inside my fortress
« on: November 08, 2009, 06:41:07 am »
my best megaproject was a giant dam in a badlands map with giant natural valleys that had a brook at the top.

camels were forever getting into the inside of the dam, and around all the tight corners my hunters could not crossbow them, and would get slaughtered.

once a camel has tasted blood, it becomes a terrifying force of nature. i had to dispatch my champions to deal with several camels that got inside and managed to kill a hunter who tried to bash them with a crossbow.

also, in the ages ago fort where i caught a titan and tried to use it to kill off my tame animal population, the camels killed it.

so yeah, camels. the desert version of elephants, sortof.
