DF General Discussion / Re: Possible Way to Have Multiplayer?
« on: March 31, 2009, 03:23:25 am »
heh, people just reposted a bunch of stuff that was in my original block of text on the first page. oh well, big posts are intimidating to read, i guess.

i really like slappy mooses idea with the player armies. i can see this working as creating civilization entities during your play that can go invade later forts that other players create. i would imagine that having persistant forts that exist as a world entity after you leave them, in the same way as a retired adventurer, would do this pretty easily. you just have to really annoy the civilization your last fort was a part of, and its military will show up as a siege.

there is also a big precedent for this sort of multiplayer type sharing in roguelikes. in games like nethack people post all their "bones" files, which are files containing all the details, corpses and items of their dead adventurers. you can then find the bodies of countless players before you as you wander the underground.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Assasination methods!

alas, for my scanner has long since departed. i have allways thought it funny how you can store things like a stack of giant corpses along with all the left feet of an entire villiage inside one leather backpack.

aha, so the pet thing is a bug. it is indeed only dogs and cats dying. lots and lots of bloody cats.

the dam thing may indeed be the temperature, as i am on a badlands map with no wood whatsoever. what is really strange about this is that the entire top z level of water has now gotten to 4/7, and the brook hasnt drained itself trying to refill it. im going to go around with the K key to see if something is blocking the refill passage that i cant see.

also, ive used the map compressor to get my map all sorted, but the file archive simply hates me. i cant get myself a profile and it tells me my map is too big, so ill find a place to host it and get the file the map archiver created up for download. i cant go through adding helpful comments to my fortress this way though.

have it hack off one of your burning limbs then throw that at it. it will totally work. it fixes the problem of your limb being on fire at the same time.

my favourite assasination method involves throwing peices of myself at people. anything wild animals have bitten off or any extremity that has been removed. i would like to get ahold of a kidney or lung or something, ive seen dwarves in dwarf mode survive the complete removal of both of them. an eye would also be nice.

if wrestling only allowed you to jam things in peoples mouths as a variation of strangling them.

perhaps there is something i can edit so i can target myself with my own attacks.

EDIT: i just reread what i wrote there and i am now quite horrified at my own perversity.

sounds like DF alright. when the goblins have passed the fortifications and are in the dining room playing pinata with the nobles children, the dwarf military is off sleeping or drinking.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Rock Crystals
« on: March 30, 2009, 03:40:44 am »
i have far more luck getting my rock crystals and other gems i want from the dwarven traders. if their civ has access to something you can ask for it. its great, you can order in nearly unlimited amounts of super valuable stuff like yellow diamonds to encrust everything with. if you are ever lucky enough to find yellow diamonds or the like while digging you only tend to end up with one or two in your entire area. but the dwarf traders will have an unlimited supply, but only if they exist in the biome of their home city. its just the luck of the draw. for instance, everyone in my fort is wearing carp leather and giant cave spider chitin, as the caravan brings a wagonful of both every year, as my parent civ is on a river with a cave near it.

so, ive been running this fort i have now for many many game years. ive just finally finished filling up a megaproject dam, which is 30+ z levels high. now its full, however, the top layer of water is slowly vanishing at a speed consistent with it pouring out the bottom of the dam somewhere. however, there are no leaks that i can find, anywhere. the brook is still hooked up with the dam, so it should be able to refill it, and water seems to be coming in from that direction, but still the dam is slowly being emptied. also, the first time i filled it the brook ran dry, and i can see no evidence of this at the moment.

this is deeply perplexing. does anybody have any ideas? i can post the map on the file archive or some pictures of the dam if people want.

my other problem is all the tame pets that are dropping dead of old age. for some reason they dont get buried. this is not for lack of available coffins with pet burials allowed, the dwarves either leave them where they fell or dump them in my outdoor refuse stockpile. ive even got a few dwarves with nothing but buriel turned on, and still the pets are allowed to rot indoors. right now this is not that major, but it is making some of the owners unhappy, and the dining room miasma is annoying. ive got a few champion guards who own hordes of very old cats, and when they start dropping problems may arise.

oh, if squad leader has an injury, then the rest of his squad NEVER SPARS? damn, i need to go reorganize my military a bit now. this may explain things.

its better when you have been beating them senseless for years with a single champion armed with an artifact weapon, and the weapon starts appearing on all their armor and clothing.

Marksgoblin siege of 1056

heh, thats the same year as the battle of hastings. looks like the normans didnt do so well this time around.

if df ever gets some kind of nice graphics system in the far flung future then this sort of violence will look awesome.

this thread is making me think if the world of traps and attractions thread. it is a great idea, but is grinding along so miserably slowly.

my feeling is that most casual players can and will spend months playing an individual fort, and many of them will depopulate the worlds megabeasts and goblin civ leaders in the process. a check in and check out system sounds pretty good though, so it would still be great as an optional rather then forced thing. ie, the worlds are allways available, however, each one has a list of players who have used it and reuploaded it, with an option to view how many abandoned forts and living/dead adventurers there are in it.

you could, with some smart presentation, have all variations of the one world available on the one page, and when a player wants a world, they can browse to the page that has the one particular world, and have the link for the latest version of the world that has had the most players use it right in front of them, but with a few clicks they could check out how many versions of the world there are, who played in them, and sort by how many forts there are etc. idealy, you could also have a program that read the legends entries and threw up the number of megabeasts and civs, and what races there are present, allowing you to browse and search accordingly.

also, if you gave everyone a profile, you could create a voting system whereby worlds used by players who are perceived to have routinely created epic forts without killing off every megabeast and goblin weaponmaster can be easily found, and worlds used by several such players in succession float to the top of the reccomended list. this is something i wish was on the dwarf map archive, so you could easily find maps or players that other browsers generally recognize as awesome.

it would not be hard to also allow players to upload worlds that are rigidly controlled for succession games and the like, the initial uploader could add a list of players, and the world is only made available for download after the player before them has finished their turn, with the option of the organizer to skip anyone who stops responding, or simply make the world become automatically available again after a set time period with no updates.

anyways, ive ranted more then enough. hope i am coherant, it is late and i am tired. this idea is great.

DF General Discussion / Re: Making Elves MAD!!
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:33:26 am »
i have no time to find it now, but someone had a thread where elves had invaded and subsumed a dwarven civ, or perhaps it was the other way round. the effect was, that their dwarf king was actually an elf. they started a thread to take suggestions on what to do with their elf king when he arrived.

crazily enough their first siege came in the form of some other tribe of elves that was at war with their civ. double the awesome.

DF General Discussion / Re: New kind of chasm
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:14:38 am »
yeah, i cant wait for new chasms and the underground, its going to be great. those spider fingers can be interesting though. i can remember in one of my very early forts the years long craziness as i tried different plans for getting some little outrcrop of aluminium that was in some really inacessible spot on the fingery end of my chasm.

i wasnt clear on how to do a good military at the time, so the chasm creatures were for me amazingly difficult to deal with.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Fire snakes
« on: March 29, 2009, 10:10:14 am »
tamed vermin cant be milked. i figured this out after quite a bit of fiddling in my quest to find the source of dwarven milk. it is in fact purring maggots, invisible vermin that you can sometimes catch around chasms. this means that its really hard trying to keep them around, as random dwarves love eating exotic vermin. i ended up having to search the wiki to figure out why my tame maggots were unmilkeable, you can only use them as pets. i love the fact that dwarves will wear tame pet vermin like an item of clothing. it allways puts really funny images in my head.

ive had fire snakes appear to destroy discarded clothing near magma pipes, but nothing else. normally my magma gets into my fort through a long channel, and my forges are quite isolated, so the snakes never seem to get into my fort proper.

as a random aside, im hoping that extracts like liquid fire will get uses now toady is putting in venoms. snakeman venom poisoned trap components sound good, but something like crossbow bolts with vials of liquid fire on the end would be even better.
