General Discussion / Re: Test Your Religious Knowledge
« on: October 02, 2010, 06:09:22 pm »

6. Which of the following best describes the Catholic teaching about the bread and wine used for Communion?
wrong Answer  The bread and wine are symbols of the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
The bread and wine actually become the body and blood of Jesus Christ.

Am I the only one that sees that that is physically impossible?

also, since when is the religion you belong too defined by the colour of your skin? as the survey clearly makes a difference between white protestants and black protestants.

Rawrgh. Surprising amount of RNG "kindness" with my latest character. DDNe, first weapon I see is a +1, +3 vampiric dwarven handaxe.

The question, though, is if the two gnoll packs that were sitting on D:1 make up for finding that thing. There was a third gnoll pack on D:2 and Jessica had a flame wand, so I'm hoping the RNG's decided it's taken its pound of flesh in cost already...

I doubt it's done making me pay for that windfall, though. :-[

a very common cause of death is becoming overconfident after finding a good item, many characters with bad gear actually survive longer :P

The Air Elementalist guide with a view to eventually becoming a Lich haunter is quite interesting.  It's been going well (Air Elementalists seem quite strong) but... I've got an impossible to pass L:2.  One of the ones with 4 fecking Oklobs between me and the ways down.

wands of polymorph works great on Oklobs, they usually turn into wandering mushrooms.

don't fear mutations too much, although most are annoying as hell, very little create cause directly lethal situations with planning, my first winning character had no resist mutation and ended with the following set:

You have a pair of horns on your head.
Your system is immune to poisons.
You digest meat inefficiently.
Your metabolism is lightning-fast.
You are weak (Str -1).
You are dopey (Int -5).
You are clumsy (Dex -3).
Space sometimes distorts in your vicinity.
Armour fits poorly on your deformed body.
You frequently scream uncontrollably.
Your body is rapidly deteriorating.
You are extremely frail (-30 percent hp).
You are partially covered in red scales (AC + 1).

blurry vision isnt that bad, as all your scrolls will probably be burned already anyway :P

Now that IVAN is compiled and happily chugging away, has anyone ever found a holy handgrenade of Antioch on the first floor of a new game?

oddly enough, no.......

Plan for next time: turn around and head right back to the upstairs/downstairs. Go back through a different staircase. If you see the jellies again, just walk away. They'll probably lose you when you hit an intersection.

Killing jellies as a melee fighter is just not worth it. Sure, they're 25 or 50 exp (not sure which, but I think 50), but that much exp is irrelevant by level 4 or 5 or so. Exception: trollzerkers, transmuters, or pretty much anybody else using unarmed combat and has taken off their armor beforehand and has enough skill to kill the thing, or anybody lucky enough to find an early artifact, +5, or dwarven weapon. Even then, I wouldn't recommend walking around the level without your armor on just to kill a jelly.

Unless of course you got one-shotted or trapped between the jellies and another monster or something equally unavoidable, in which case curse the RNG and be thankful you weren't attached to the character yet. Heck, a jelly death is at least more memorable than another stupid goblin hitting for 8 damage out of nowhere.

run in circles and stone them, they can't heal by eating stones

I was going to message you about Dispater, but I didn't think you were going to read it. Your GhFE is unlikely to win against most of the demon lords.

Well I was hoping to kill all the uniques. But maybe that is too ambitious. Dispater is not a huge threat, I led him to the vestibule in order to avoid hell effects while fighting. But he is completely resistant to fire and cold (even ice storm) doesn't hurt him much either. My melee ability is not very strong so may need to work on that. Could go farm Pandemonium for a while but certainly won't be able to kill the major pan lords yet. However could steal the rest of the runes... as long as I don't do something stupid it should be fairly easy to get the 15 rune win.

I would personally advice against going into pandemonium until you are absolutely ready, I lost 2 characters going for a 15 rune win there. Also Cerebov is probably the toughest monster in the game.
also: Hellions.
