General Discussion / philosophy: is "chair" an opinion?
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:19:08 am »
This was one of the first subjects that came up during philosophy in the first year of high school. It is something that has occupied me on and off for years afterwards.

The assignment was about writing if a robot could be a human. The debate at some point arrived at what ANYTHING was anyway. What is a human? What is a robot? What is a table? What is a chair?

Is saying something is a chair an opinion?

I think the chance of war is very real at this point.

We will probably see a military buildup over the coming weeks/months, followed by another crisis, followed by an ultimatum and ultimately a Decapitating missile and air strike followed by full scale war.

CK2 + all expansions (not including the cosmetic stuff) costs £134.
Total War: Warhammer + all DLC and the incoming expansion (not including the cosmetic stuff) costs £134.

Honestly, I'd say CA are milking us a lot more here.  I've gotten far more mileage out of CK2 (and it's still ongoing) than I'm likely to get out of the entire TW:W series (if we're pretending they're separate games).  And, well, TW:W is guaranteed to have another £40 expansion and a whole new round of DLC for parts two and three, so you can realistically expect to at least double that £134 before it's finished.

Don't get me wrong, they're both fairly awful.  But I'd argue that CA are the greater of two evils here.  If they'd made CK2 most of the counts would be unavailable to play as without mods and we'd be looking at separate DLCs for Scotland, Ireland, Brittany etc etc

Thank god there are sales.

I bought the base game for 20eu and the wood elf dlc for 11.50eu

It doesn't actually call the socialist party very liberal, just labelled as 'The Left' and the chart says that they are anti-miltarism, which is not-militant.

If any of the parties are militant, it'd probably be AfD.

The Left is not the socialist part, the SPD is. (Sozialistische Partei Deutschland). The Left (Die Linke) is a groupe of various communists/far-left West German parties and the remains of the East German SED.

How do those old communist parties actually manifest as policy nowadays though?

hmmmmm

Amusing, but the hurricane has killed something like two dozen people, so maybe in poor taste? Not to presume but we do have people from Texas here.

Twas' a sore subject in Jersey for some time after Sandy.

mismanagement of a country costs a lot more than 2 dozen lives though.

Meanwhile, legalisation is really starting to affect marijuana prices in the US. Where in september 2015 growers would still get 4740 dollars on average per kilo of weed, last july prices had dropped to 3587 dollars.

The total value of legally sold weed in the US has reached 6 billion this year.

6 billion dollars that would have otherwise gone to organized crime.

I have always felt the taboo on cannibalism is rather overrated.

It was always my impression that the tribes doing it ate the dead with great dignity and respect. It was a way of passing on the strength of the deceased person unto yourself.

Actually it is pretty insulting that rejecting immigration is deemed a phobia to begin with.

A phobia is an irrational fear. Rejecting immigration is a stance on a political issue.

I get the impression that there were fights during the entire day before the car murder.

Yeah, a lot of that is because the night before a few hundred Nazi supporting fucks surrounded about thirty-ish protesting students and beat the shit out of them with lit torches. The day after you had the occasional pepper spray and brawl, which was something between incredibly brave and pretty stupid for the counter-protesting folks considering the marchers were littered with shits carrying firearms.

Then the nazi shit killed someone in a terrorist attack, and soon thereafter the president bothsides the event as swaths of the right wing either embraced the literally fucking murderous Nazi shitbag or pointedly refrained from criticizing him and/or the other Nazis and people marching right beside goddamn Nazis.

I am actually surprised these things don't escalate into full blown firefights more often.

Spoiler: RE: picking sides (click to show/hide)

The irony of invoking the same logic as the nazis, namely-- the very existence of the hated group is intolerable, and justifies my hate and violence-- also does not seem to sink in, as evidenced by even some of the statements here in this thread.
If I am hard on the left leaning people of this thread, it is because I expect and demand better from them. I see them becoming exactly the thing they rail against, and it displeases me greatly.
What is your opinion on lefties being violent against what they see as existential threats to their lives. Are their actions not then defensible, becoming violent to save their own kin?

That has to be one of the most dumb and dangerous ways of thinking in existence.

In fact that is precisely the kind of thinking extremists used for centuries to justify their racial violence and oppression.

I am not even sure what we are discussing now.

Is it that antifa and other far-left groups don't use violence? Is it that the far right uses more violence than the far left?

Because I think the far right uses more violence than the far left. But I don't see how that makes those in the far left that do use violence any less assholes.

So basically you have to be high on drugs to be pro-immigrants?

The factual truth of someone hitting another person with a bikelock and getting arrested for it is not influenced by who is reporting it when the act is obviously caught on camera.

Response to a terror attack should be to respond to the terrorists, through state approved means.

Burning flags, tearing down statues in mob justice style gatherings, and being general ne'r-do-wells is not the appropriate way to deal with terrorists.

It is not wrong to point that out.
"Mob justice" refers to killings, beatings, or running people out of town.  A statue isn't a person.  You're conflating violence and non-violence.

And that still doesn't answer my question.  We were talking about antifa's "violence" before either of those things happened.  Hell, I think it came up within a couple hours of the attacks.  What is it about the Charlottesville attacks that made you want to go extra hard on the counterprotestors?  Why are the perceived misgivings of the counterprotestors relevant here?

There has been plenty of antifa violence and harassment in the past.

here is one:

edit: ok that is some shitty right wing site, but they were the first link that had the arrest news and the video on the same page.
