DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Screw Pumps & Infinite Water Disasters
« on: November 04, 2008, 12:36:44 am »
This is not true, at least not in 40d.

Of course, with any liquid project, it's a very smart move to ensure that you have an off switch.  Just in case.

Yes, screw pumps pressurize magma to their level, so your trap could be:

Code: [Select]

 sP XXX___X
~XX       X
XXXXXXXXXXX

Where sP is the screw pump, ~ is your source, and _ are your hatches (or whatnot).

the elves' bone ban.

In .40d, the only thing I've seen the elves get annoyed by is wood.  Not bone, not leather, not slaughtering animals in the butchery right next to the trade depot...just the fact that I happen to have dumped all those things into a wooden bin for convenience.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Pitting Creatures
« on: November 02, 2008, 10:32:24 pm »
So I'm fairly new to DF and I'm having some trouble pitting creatures. I've currently got a huge stockpile of goblins after the latest seige, and I've built myself a pit to throw them into. My problem is, every time I designate a creature to be thrown into the pit - they run as soon as my dwarves goes to get them out of the cage.

Goblin thieves and kobold snatchers will run.  Goblin (and human and elven, etc) troops will allow themselves to be pitted.  So much for military training.

Somewhat unrelated, I accidently caught a bronze collosus in my cage traps (so much for the epic battle I was expecting..)

Cage traps are great for making arena fights and whatnot, but they do make defense too easy.

Personally, I'm going through a "trial by combat" phase, where once I think one of my champions is buff enough, I put him in the arena against nasties (I haven't gotten any megabeasts yet with this map); if he dies, obviously unworthy, if he lives, he becomes part of the "ruling caste".

IIRC, setting either good or evil to 0 negates both.  Instead, try something very lopsided in evil's favor, but with some good still present.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Freezing Water

Since you want this for indoor waterfalls only, you shouldn't have to worry about ice.  Just ensure that once it's let inside, the water doesn't travel through any areas that have been exposed to the sun.  That is, to answer your original questions, yes, you can divert water underground and then run it in a loop, no, it won't work if part of that loop is on the surface.

For future reference, I think the easiest answer would be "build an exterior shell first, then build the tower inside of it"

I've got no firsthand experience with freezing water into ice, but if it works like water+magma=obsidian, then it destroys anything in that square -- constructed floors, fortifications, stairs, etc.

Sorry, but the response to the thread title is: Well, duh.

It's not the kind of thing you make up.

Where's the wikipedia article for having levers control things with absolutely no physical connection between them at all?

Um.

Farm + Plump Helmets + dwarf with at least a few points in farming = More food than you'll ever need

I think the only time I ever hit starvation was when I tried "turning on every job for every dwarf".  Combination of nobody farming and the planters having no skill meaning a lot of crops that didn't get started.

Honestly, I would imagine that having to kill the monsters upon reclamation would be much harder than farming.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Magma Pipe Refilling Question

No, but uncaged ones can burn wooden barrels and bins.
Actually that's not true.  I have two forts that have been around for at least 7 game years each.  Each one also has a booze stockpile right next the magma pipe.  I haven't had a single explosion.

I refer you to creature_subterranean.txt, where fire snakes not only have [IMMOLATE], but also [FIXED_TEMP:14000] (hotter than magma, that).

I highly doubt supply/demand has anything to do with it.  Civ access to things definitely restricts what they will bring (curse you, bauxite-less Mountainhome!), but my dwarf civ, Armor bless their souls, consistently brings overpriced steel toys, after 20 years of never buying one, the elves still show up asking me if I want bows and arrows, the humans are happy to sell me large clothing, etc.

It seems that each race has a "set" of things it'll offer, and then what the civ has access to affects the specifics (type, etc) of what those things are.

I want to build one.  A large one.  But, my god, designating the constructions is horrifying.

I want to believe that someone has some AutoHotKey script, or some other mechanism for doing this easily.  Please tell me this is true!
