DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Running out of wild animals?
« on: September 29, 2008, 08:21:25 am »
I think i have read somewhere about the wildlife being only replenished a finite number of times. So maybe you run out.
Or maybe i am wrong.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Builds - Your choice?

Mason and Carpenter are usually busy 100% of the time, so making them multiskilled does not gain you a lot.
Also these skills are easily trained due to a steady workload.

Fisher + Fishcleaner sounds too good to be true...
You will need to Micromanage the Dwarf all the time to make it work, as a Dwarf who has "Fishing" labour enabled will not do anything else. You will have to diable the Fishing all the time to make him Fishclean.
This plus the carp and everything... Most of the time i don't fish at all.
Just buy all the fish/turtles they bring from the caravans for the bones/shells.

I tend to take a:
1) Mechanic (Better traps) / Building Designer (The skill seem hard to increase, unless you do a lot of De-\Constructing for the very purpose of boosting it)
2) Cook / Brewer (for Happy Dwarves)
3) Grower (Sometimes make him Gatherer too, but i only use Gathering it in the very beginning, so most of the time i skip it)
4) Woodcutter / Axedwarf
+ 3 Peasants who will be my Miner, Boss and whatever is needed - these skills are very easy to train anyway.

The initial Carpentry / Masonry jobs are done by whoever is idle. Later Immigrants fill the vacations.

I guess after building 6500+ worth of windmills one or two wasted on axles do not hurt that much  ;D

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Preventing Cave Adaption

"Civilians Stay Inside" goes with "Light Above Ground" (which allways goes together) not with "Inside" / "Outside"
I am pretty sure here, because if i use "Civilians Stay Inside" on my fort everyone will stop working crying about forbidden areas, because of the Main Staircase and Corridors which are "Inside" but "Light Above Ground" .

You could just leave them be, but disconnect the power source. I think they will not drain your FPS once you stop them.

"Reload" does not seem to be quite the right term here, but yeah, after collapsing half of the map in a huge cave-in-trap, you will need to rebuild it before you can do it again  ;D

Why would you want more than 200 of these ?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can't find lava
« on: September 28, 2008, 04:48:02 pm »
On many maps lava will be under the surface. A pipe should be still quite easy to find. A pool will only be present in a few z-levels, os it's a bit trikier to locate. You could reveal the map (like in "cheat") or just keep digging ;)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Feelings of a kidnapped baby

Various creatures value children differently. Some will eat they offspring.
Dwarves dont go this far, but they apparently do not care too much either.

I just had a accident...

A Joung-Mother-Legendary-Miner was caught in a minor cave in and became unconcious for a few moments. In the meantime the baby crawled away (just a few tiles). But once the mother was back on her feet, she prefered to go take a gulp of booze rather than fetching the baby. After that she finished the mining job, ate, slept and attended a party... For some reason the "Seeking Infant" job was not triggered...

In the meantime the baby - quite a vital one - crawled around, left the fortress, and ultimately fell in a murky pool and quickly drowned (around the time the mother was sleeping). There wasn't a way to retrieve the corpse too, so it didn't get a proper burial.

At some time during the party, these terrible sad new reached the mother, and brought her so far dormant mothery insticts back online again.
She got upset, tantrumed and beeing quite tough legendary miner, and the only one with a weapon (her pick) in the room, she made a quick end to the party...

I really wish there would be a way to wash the Vomit from the dwarves.
This is what annoys me the most.

I can live with dwarves getting sick occasionally when going outside. It's a bit more annoying on military, but i can live with that too...

However seeing the dwarves completely covered with vomit for years to come makes me sick.

I seen some descriptions of dwarf-washing-chamebers, but so far i failed to create one :(

I actually like his bigger screen - everything else stay the same, but the portion of the map visible without scrolling is bigger.

at Colten - the default grids are 80x25

255
How do you make the power for this ? 65 Water-wheels ?

(I guess the answer is in the map, but i can't really read these...)
