I...don't get it.
On another note: yeah, Wardogs are a big help too.  I'd say, if you don't understand booze production yet, bring tons, cause that slow-down factor used to drive me nuts and the caravans just don't cut it.
No dur, bring 26 of each at the start.

Bring 36 plump helmet spawn ( easiest food/booze ) , 36 pig tail ( basically for cloth produce ) , and 36 rock nuts ( best food supplier ) , and farm in soil, or muddy rock ( water + rock ) .

Bring 4 cats ( all-purpose animal, isolate with channels, use a bridge to collect ) , 4 dog ( isolate with the cats, all-purpose guardians, train via kennels )

Architect, good, mix with nobility, bad, but mix with mechanic, siege engineer, good.

Also fishing good, really reliable, just needs a fisher and fish cleaner, don't forget no cooky, the prepared fishy ( cooking + fish = no bones/shells ) unless you're making roasts.

Ya can't really have cheats when there's no way to win the game. But to prevent you from losing--how about sealing off the fortress completely from the outside world? Then have everyone farm. Can't possibly lose.
Animal farms, agriculture, indoor fishing... Yep, he's right, sealing off is the ultimate savior.

The thing with the cat horde . . . don't they adopt dwarves too quickly for that to work?
And yeah, you've convinced me to (temporarily) remove radioactivity from cats.  It's just not as funny as that whole list combined
Solution:

Build an array ( Column or Row ) of cages and fill them each with a lot of cats, and make sure that place is isolate ( via outwards opening bridge ) , THEN when it is D-Day, pull the lever and release the beasts.
Also make sure to have a trap array and a marksman tower near it so you can get those f-tards while they're being mauled by cats, and when your done haul, haul, haul, and kill the non-believers via an execution lever and fill in what it does.

Fact: when animal hauling they're immune to the cat yiffiness

Fact: When building an animal farm, make sure to make two consecutive layers of tightly closed double doors, followed by a 3x2 retracting bridge over a pit, which leads back into the stupid farm, let them yiff and seasonally clean out the spawn, and extras, into cages.

Fact: When you start out with animals, CAGE THEM AS FAST AS FUCKINGLY POSSIBLE, THEIR YIFF IS TOO POWERFUL!!!

Fact: Cats have saved me too many times to make into radioactive cats

The solution: NEVER ENGRAVE ON FLOORS.
Nah, it's much more fun just to engrave floors anyway no matter what could happen to them!  If you end up getting a tantrum or even a tantrum spiral, well, that's what makes it so fun!
My brewer went crazy because he was attacked by a possessed guy, then tantrum, and what I know, is that 1/3 of the originals hung out in one spot like, five years.

I usually remove all the hillsides leading my fortress and wall it off and then spam cage traps.

I learned my lesson after a Goblin ambush killed a few dwarves. Snatchers are becoming nuisance as well.
Animals as Baits?

It lures them into any trap, it is like the value of a replaceable animal is than that of a dwarf.

  • F: Test your experiments on them ( Water Cannons, Weapon Trap of 10 Scourges... )

I think I've finally found my first Giant Cave Spider, in a magma pool of all things. I didn't even know they could inhabit magma pools. Anyway, I'd rather catch it alive, to maybe sic on some traders or goblins later. Can I just catch it with a cage trap? If yes, how should I go about actually getting it into the trap? Oh, and is there any way to tell where the thing is before it Springs Into Action?
  • Seal the area
  • Make a tunnel to the area
  • Set a cage trap in there
  • Place leash with a cat attached to it farther down the tunnel
  • Open the tunnel
  • Watch it try to eat the all-purpose animal
  • Get the cage
  • Make a 10x 10 room with one side completely made out of clear glass, a floodgate in the back ( for catching the wanker and a hole in the ceiling which can be locked, make sure to connect the wankers' rooms with a grate ( they breed via spores )
  • Drop the wanker in there
  • When it is clean up time, set up a cage trap and cat bait on a leash
  • Open the gate
  • Collect the junk
  • 10-13 until you die...

I've been toying with this idea, and I'd like to see if anyone had already tested whether or not it works-
The core of the trap is a 2-tall chamber bordered by bridges on all sides. When the proper lever is pulled, all the bridges forming the walls open outward and the bridge forming the floor retracts. This chamber is flooded with water and lava to create a solid projectile, and that projectile is dropped on a solid, stable (no digging anywhere below it) chamber where your enemies are located.
The result should be a cave-in which should obliterate anyone below it and knock out anyone near.

A drown pit trap, cunning, but if you add some more thinking, you can make an ejection system.

Make a water cannon, it is the only way to kill the vermin.

Also to loot them without making them angry, FORBID EVERYTHING IN THE DEPOT, AND DESTROY THE DEPOT, THEN USE THE WATER CANNON.
