DF Gameplay Questions / Are underground rivers still around?
« on: April 27, 2010, 10:58:33 pm »
I know the old rivers are gone, but I also saw people mentioning cave rivers and waterfalls when 0.31 just came out. Could they have been just very elongated cave lakes, or is there something really different?
Of course, I'm wondering about this for the sake of waterwheels. In 0.28 we could dam the cave river from the source, dig out huge channels and then fill them with waterwheels. That felt good.

DF Gameplay Questions / Workshop profile not working?
« on: April 27, 2010, 09:53:43 pm »
Actually this has always been the case for me, not just for 0.31. If I restrict some specific dwarves can use a workshop, they will use it just fine. But when I set a minimum skill level on the workshop (which is lower than what my dwarves have), nobody would use it. Any ideas?
Just tried: if I set a minimum skill limit and enable everyone individually (names appear green instead of gray), then dwarves with skill levels lower than the limit will also use the workshop. It's as if the limit is not set.

General Discussion / What do nations do on mourning days?
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:09:03 pm »
The 21st is China's mourning day for the recent earthquake. Actually it has already begun in Beijing time. Cancellation of all public entertainment activities has caused some people to voice their "concerns" about their private plans. While I view those people in great contempt, I also wonder: is such cancellation a common practice during mourning in other countries? What do other countries' governments do on mourning days? Somewhere I read that mourning for the Polish politicians also involved cancellation of entertainment programs. What about others?
Of course, the fewer mourning the better.

It's just like the old economic stones mod, only, well, vanilla.
This and the removal of autopause on discovering new stone are my current favorite changes.

DF General Discussion / Talk about your first worldgen in 0.31
« on: April 01, 2010, 07:38:32 am »
I got up at after 4AM, found 0.31 was out, downloaded.
The first world generated using default parameters was Camade Alino, "The Realm of Dawns".
There's a stream called Earthenhammer. That's where I'll STRIKE THE EARTH!
And no elves.

This came up during some discussion on writing stories:
I have no doubt that well-trained soldiers can identify any weapon they might come across, but how often do they consciously think about and communicate such information? Especially when the weapon encountered isn't really special in its usage or is very common, or when they are on the front line?
I, with no military knowledge whatsoever, seriously think soldiers have more to worry about than exactly what gun the enemy is using. It kills you anyway, so watch out. I think anyone who includes precise, time- and faction- accurate information is just trying to show off his knowledge about weapons, instead of writing about a realistic battlefield or soldier. It's like "Hey! I know what's used during this period by that army! I'm an expert on military history!"
i.e.
Rather than "It's this specific howitzer with something caliber from the whatevercountry's army!"
I prefer to read "Artillery! Run!" or something along those lines. I mean, you are being fired at. By the enemy.
Also "He's got this model of rifle" vs "He's got an old-looking rifle decorated with bands of turtle shell. It menaces with spikes of horse bone."

DF General Discussion / I dreamed of the new version!
« on: February 20, 2010, 09:36:18 am »
First we sent a dog into the underground space using the new tunnel things. It managed to kill one of the floating gas creatures mentioned in the devlog, but got killed by some breath weapon from a second such creature. Then my crossbowdwarf killed it with a single bolt. I tried to watch the combat log, but couldn't find how.
Then we moved in and built our fortress. I remember seeing a surface brook going underground, and thought that we could use it as our water source. Some ice on the surface melted, releasing some ice-based creatures sealed within. I hoped they don't go near my entrance.
I completed my magma trap at the entrance, and was dropping goblins into it when creatures (probably trolls) attacked from underground. I sent my military after them, but civilians were getting in the way, standing their ground like soldiers instead of running away. That was when I woke up.
Anyone else dreaming of stuff? ;D

General Discussion / Mmm.... How serious are over-inflated car tires?
« on: October 06, 2009, 11:28:03 pm »
I just put a bit too much air in... first time using the air pump and I guess I didn't read the gauge correctly. The manufacturer's standard is 29 psi and now my gauge reads 31~32. It doesn't seem that much over the limit, but still, I'm just new to driving.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / "She had a miscarriage recently"?
« on: October 03, 2009, 05:36:09 pm »
DF never fails to amaze.
This dwarf was just let out of a cage. She was probably injured by goblins and fell unconscious on a cage trap. When I checked her thoughts I found this.

It should have nothing to do with her daughter, who's a child already, and was seen alongside the cage. There was no corpse or anything in the cage. Has anyone else seen this message before?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Amazing DF temperature system.
« on: September 26, 2009, 12:21:13 am »
(Yes, I guess this could use a new thread)
My magma dipping trap wasn't working very well. In a weird twist of mind, I dug a new channel directly below the corridor and filled it with magma. Suddenly everything started working. Booze explode, clothes burn, and prisoners let loose in the corridor as test subjects actually are hurt more often (just by looking, no rigorous stats though). In the same way as magma melts ice, heating the corridor actually works!
Can't imagine what we could do if the system becomes more advanced.

It's like the uber mist generator unfolded into a chain and with magma, and repeatedly puts new blocks of magma into the system instead of using only one block. All I've managed to make now is a prototype using water. You will need magma-safe mechanisms - try some melting point mod if you don't have bauxite. The video might be more useful in explaining everything:http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1679
Also try a floodable corridor to instantly wall off your fortress, or put booze under the dipping tiles... I can't wait to see someone making a video of it working XD

EDIT: Made a working version, and apparently it wasn't very impressive. Doesn't always set things on fire due to the short time of exposure, so my planned booze mines wouldn't work. It does hurt stuff sometimes, so it might still be useful. I'll make a video when the next siege comes.
Still, it would work if I just shut the siegers inside the corridor and bash them repeatedly with this magma wall.
EDIT2: If the corridor is also warmed by magma from below, the system apparently becomes more deadly, capable of causing booze explosions, and hurt enemies more easily. It could also be illusion though.

EDIT3: video. http://mkv25.net/dfma/movie-1708-magmacorridorvssiege
It was as (in)effective as any trap that relies on shutting enemies in something, but was also very fun to watch. Maybe a longer corridor would do better.

The only female horse brought with the wagon on embark just gave to birth to horse foals. Maybe she mated with some of the merchants' wagon horses.
I wonder if this applies to wild animals.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The royal lineage's future lies in chaos!
« on: June 17, 2009, 09:14:35 am »
The Queen at my current fort just gave birth to a boy. All her other children are dead, so the baby will grow to take the throne.
When I check the personality -
He is often nervous. He cracks easily under pressure. He is very energetic and active. He revels in chaos and disorder. blahblahblah.
Quite dwarven actually.

DF General Discussion / DF - real life coincidence
« on: May 29, 2009, 06:53:14 pm »
It just started raining here like 1 minute ago, and at about exactly the same time when I heard raindrops falling on the glass, DF said "It has started raining." Lol.

Basically the clothing on my dwarves are getting ruined after a long time, so I ordered a lot of clothes to be made. Shirts, trousers, etc. While they take the shirts/trousers/socks/shoes just fine, the caps and gloves are just sitting there. So... what should I make to get them all taken?
