General Discussion / Terminator Salvation
« on: May 27, 2009, 10:28:20 pm »
Just saw it, loved it, and don't get why critics keep not liking it. Marcus' story was quite moving, actions were great, and there were many scenes that remind me of the past films.
TERMINATE THE CRITICS! ;D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first serious tower attempt.

Perhaps not that impressive, but it's my first tower for living in. It's built by casting obsidian in a green glass mold (I like to think these walls are transparent to a certain degree). Over 10 years spent in construction, now the dwarves have finally moved in, and are moving the supplies over from the old underground fortress. No more cave spider bites!

Life Advice / Maybe I was wrong with humanity.
« on: May 04, 2009, 10:57:23 am »
I was under the impression that rumors or wrong accusations without factual basis whatsoever cannot hurt anyone that's decent enough in terms of knowledge, abilities, and the way to treat others. People that don't know this person may think something, but these people likely have nothing to do with him/her anyway. People who really know this person wouldn't believe those outrageous claims. Of course, I'm not talking about wrong evidence, like some recent news about genetic labs having mistakes on rape cases. Actually some of my relatives, being very nice and respectable people, managed to fight off some rumors easily, so I know this can happen to some extent.
Well, when I brought this up somewhere else, nobody seemed to believe. The problem is, they usually bring up conditions that are exceedingly rare in my point of view. What if someone is just bored? Well, how many bored people will risk the effort and legal consequences to defame others, if just for fun? What if you step on someone accidentally and he now hates you? Damn it, I say - Is it really that hard to be nice? Just say "sorry" instead of "why the hell didn't you step aside" should be enough. He might still be angry, but unlikely to be angry enough to, well, follow you and try to ruin your life.
So if it boils down to conflict of interests, say someone wants your position. I believe if one has enough ability to do his job well, people would believe that he'll, well, be appropriate for that position. Plus, any rumor without factual basis can be discredited.
I wonder what's other people's experience with this kind of thing. I know people that get into trouble due to not being nice, and people that are immune to rumors due to being decent. I have run into trouble myself because of, well, no reason. I guess it was racism. However, faced with unfounded hostility, other people at the scene supported me, so I believe that people won't just follow anything.
Maybe I'm just too lucky, and maybe some people I know are just too good. Whatever.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Poor goblin.
« on: April 04, 2009, 02:12:55 pm »
There was this goblin ambush squad which encountered a skeletal giant eagle before coming to my gate. They took out the eagle (good!), but one goblin got her right arm torn off, kept going unconscious and couldn't even retreat. Now two zombie hoary marmots have found her, only attacking when she's awake, dealing minimal damage that heal quickly while she goes unconscious again, tearing off chunks every time. It's been about 2 months since I realized this, now I'll just see how long she would last.

Life Advice / What exactly is the Williams's index of diversity?
« on: March 30, 2009, 12:30:59 am »
Got a handout from this conservation stuff course, with this Williams index about which I can't find almost any information on the web (there was plenty for Shannon's and others). The formula is: S = a*ln(1+(N/a)). S and N are known, and you'll need to calculate a. Is it really possible with reasonable ease, or is there just some typo on the handout? The examples given have some results that don't come out equal when put into the formula.
S=13,N=27,a=9.9
S=13,N=21,a=13
S=10,N=29,a=8.5

DF Gameplay Questions / Do war animals stop breeding? (SOLVED: NO)
« on: March 19, 2009, 02:18:42 pm »
From what I've heard on the forum they really shouldn't, but during my game I constantly get situations when no babies are born anymore after all animals of a kind were trained into war animals. In one case I had to order dogs from caravans despite having about 50 war dogs, both males and females. They just start to die of old age without having any new puppies. The raws aren't modified except for adding [trAINABLE] to a bunch of animals.

EDIT: solved. Just saw some of my war animals giving birth. I guess it's just about patience.

I added [trainable] to cave crocodiles, and then captured several from my cave river to start breeding war crocs. Didn't notice they have the building destroyer tag though -  now they keep going to the Countess's room and toppling her statues, again and again and again. I'll now set the doors to be locked to pets. (Consort was killed in the lava pit because he mandated crystal glass.)

EDIT: After a closer look the crocs that have been causing trouble actually are listed as "hostile" under the units screen. They can't be slaughtered, but they don't bother my dwarves either. They don't even touch statues placed outside the fort (in an attempt to lure them out). However, they attacked and killed an elven diplomat (probably came to tell us to cut fewer trees - good riddance). Not wanting any other troubles, I decided to "put them down" by putting weapon traps around a statue. They worked. I heard that tamed but hostile creatures aren't affected by traps? How strange...

Stray Gorilla (Tame) has given birth to a girl.
(Whatever name), Mayor has given birth to a girl.
Just happened within 1 minute of each other.

BTW, I added [trAINABLE] to gorillas. Looking forward to war gorillas!

I was making a structure which uses grates to shut captive creatures in the middle of a water flow, while piercing them on upright spikes linked to levers. Hoped to get a nice bloody water effect, but failed -  I guess blood staining is only for brooks?
Well, that wasn't the point. My captives just kept getting blasted through the grate when I turned the pumps on. Later changed it to fortification, still no use. Items don't get pushed through. I'm now using the 7/7 water trick to prevent sacrificial objects from escaping.
Is this really the intended behaviour?
(Trying to imagine goblins getting pushed through a grate by high pressure water and come out in bits and shreds)

Edit: apparently someone reported a similar bug about bars... #000680

Other Games / Want the name of an old business simulation game
« on: September 27, 2008, 06:22:17 pm »
I think it was in the mid 90s when I played it. Back then I didn't even know much English, so naturally I couldn't remember the name. In the game you would rent a building and turn it into a factory. complete with conveyor belts, machines, offices and storage areas (which look like those small wooden platforms transported by forklifts). I still remember if you assign an office personnel to a machine, he or she might get stuck instide. Quite funny to look at, actually. The view was top-down. I'm pretty sure that I ran the game on Windows 95, although it was probably designed for 3.x.
Any ideas?

Other Games / UnReal World, anyone?
« on: September 26, 2008, 08:50:48 pm »

Heard of this a couple of years ago, but only got to play it recently. An interesting RPG set in ancient northern Europe. Your goal is simply to survive, by hunting, fishing, farming, etc. Don't forget to get warm for winter.
I actually ran into DF when someone on their forum mentioned it. Now that DF/M&B/URW are my top 3 games, but URW seems far less popular than the other two. It really deserves more.

DF General Discussion / Your most anticlimatic moment?
« on: September 14, 2008, 07:02:36 pm »
For both modes. I've searched and didn't see a similar thread, so while posting this 'incident', I guess I'll just make this a place for people to post similar things.
Just now I got my first dragon attack since starting DF. I ordered everyone inside, and pulled the lever that would flood the entrance tunnel with magma. Unfortunately the flow was so slow that the dragon got past the magma exit without even touching the magma!
Then it went down at the 3rd stone-fall trap.
BTW, 1st post. I didn't feel the need to post anything before, but I just have to post this one. XD
