DF Gameplay Questions / Workshop profile not working?
« on: April 27, 2010, 09:53:43 pm »
Actually this has always been the case for me, not just for 0.31. If I restrict some specific dwarves can use a workshop, they will use it just fine. But when I set a minimum skill level on the workshop (which is lower than what my dwarves have), nobody would use it. Any ideas?
Just tried: if I set a minimum skill limit and enable everyone individually (names appear green instead of gray), then dwarves with skill levels lower than the limit will also use the workshop. It's as if the limit is not set.

DF General Discussion / Re: An open letter to Toady

I guess 0.31 is precisely why people became aware that it might be an issue. It was worth it, but still...
In the end, only Toady knows what features are better coded in the same release, anyway.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Breeding Stock From Elves
« on: April 26, 2010, 07:30:47 am »
Come to think of it, the only time I've seen them breed is War Grizzly Bears, which I had to retrain myself...  Maybe only animals you train/retrain can breed in this context?
Yeah, had to train them to fight LIKE DWARVES! Perhaps elven war bears just walk around annoying stuff.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Caverns sans vegetation
« on: April 22, 2010, 03:53:34 pm »
No, still not working. When the first cave was uncovered, soil floors near the surface started growing tower-caps. The second cave was muddy, but did not grow anything even after I uncovered the third cave which has water, and carved out an uninterrupted tunnel (no stairs, etc. nothing.) between the second and third caves.
I'll now try to do this to the first and second caves.

I got the same thing for the second of the three caves I uncovered. The third one has water, but nothing is growing in the second.
I'll try dumping some water into it.

You can just put a drawbridge over the pool.

Pointing out weaknesses is good.
Pointing out weaknesses that do not exist or have already been announced is very, very annoying.

General Discussion / What do nations do on mourning days?
« on: April 20, 2010, 03:09:03 pm »
The 21st is China's mourning day for the recent earthquake. Actually it has already begun in Beijing time. Cancellation of all public entertainment activities has caused some people to voice their "concerns" about their private plans. While I view those people in great contempt, I also wonder: is such cancellation a common practice during mourning in other countries? What do other countries' governments do on mourning days? Somewhere I read that mourning for the Polish politicians also involved cancellation of entertainment programs. What about others?
Of course, the fewer mourning the better.

I actually managed to get the RNG say "Washrooms", only not using it. I should try that some time.

Replace the water in the mist generator design with magma, which slowly dips enemies in magma until they burn.

DF General Discussion / Re: Disappointed.

Well, they would have been, if half of the guys in this thread hadn't totally fanboy'd out on him and jumped on his back so much for it. There was no reason to get all dismissive and rude about it, and if anything caused the argument going on now, it was probably that. A simple explanation of why the features he's used to got a little messed up would have sufficed.

This is my biggest problem with this community. People are unable to acknowledge any criticism of the game whatsoever. You could say "hey guys the game actually formatted my hard drive, I'm kind of disappointed by that" and  people would  be like "WOW TOADY DOES IT FOR FREE AND ITS STILL  IN ALPHA OK SO SHUT UP". People have no perspective at all.

Well, probably because the criticism don't really apply to many people.

For example, the OP couldn't get the tileset to work. I got mine in less than 10 minutes. Window resizing can be done. - and + works with my laptop keyboard. I have been looking forward to the new features in the devlog, and was very satisfied. I do not feel this version "doesn't work" or "fails" in any way.

If someone criticizes something I like using reasons that, plainly, do not exist, to the best of my knowledge, then I will at least feel confused.

It's just like the old economic stones mod, only, well, vanilla.
This and the removal of autopause on discovering new stone are my current favorite changes.

I'm rather curious as to whether someone can jury-rig reveal.exe

Lol I always thought that was 'jerry' rig. Then again when I was little I thought chest-of-drawers were 'Chester drawers'

sorry for the OT, but jury-rig and jerry-rig are the same thing effectively, I think jerry-rig is newer usage, possibly of American descent, but I know both can be used he same way.

back on topic, I've not had chance to play much, so all I've done is the standard embark, flat(ish) wooded surface and 167 total z levels... freaking awesome.

Jury Rigged is a term, originally nautical, from the 1700s. Different etymologies have been presented, some being:
-Jury being a contraction of "Injury" (A repair to an "Injury" the ship sustained. "We rigged up the jury")
-Jury's Latin root, "To help, aid, assist" (We rigged up a fix, to help)

Jerry Rig is a derivative that emerge around World War 2, originally in British soldiers, referring to German ("Jerry") engineering in a (not necessarily deserved) derogatory manner.

The term has always amused me, especially because "To jury rig" could also refer to the act of "rigging a jury", or Jury Tampering.

Wow.
I always thought the term originally came from "rigging a jury".

They are.... beautiful.
Can you safely use the magma without breaching the HFS?
