Thanks Balathustrius ... It helps so much to get another eye on these things ... I know the picture isn't RIGHT (albeit I don't think it's bad either) but those comments are VERY helpful as to why.

It took me a phenomenal amount of concentration to even take the drawing to that level ... when I posted last night I was proper beat, couldn't stop thinking about it (it's probably the first 'proper' painting I have ever tried to do) ... but also a real good learning experience.

Probably explains why I threw a night-time backdrop on it (so I didn't have to do any detail!) after I had spent all my time drawing the central figure lit 'normally'.

Hopefully I can keep practicing and it should get easier! (and with luck my standard will increase as well ..)

I think I will revisit this in a couple of weeks and see if I can take it up a notch or two.

p.s. I don't think there are Dogmen in yet, I was inspired a little bit by the new 'animalmen' alluded to in the upcoming version ...

Todays post ... the dogman is advanced further.

I think I am going to leave this here, it was a valuable learning experience.

I think the picture is reasonably effective, but the dog is clearly drawn on a seperate layer to the background!

He could maybe do with sharper shadows behind him, the only feasible way he could be lit would be from a campfire, which is supposed to be the case.

Please provide critique if you see fit! Thanks Legolord and azazel for even giving me the time of day!

What are those implications?

Good question? I can't think of too much with a higher potential moral score than 'Love and Compassion' ...

Soon as the OP asked ... (cue meaningless ramble)

We are human, and this should be celebrated. And the Earth gives us a home. We should probably look after it (albeit I’m not sure that civilisation in its current iteration is ready to do this properly at the expense of personal comfort etc.).

What makes us human are the important points that we should seek to reinforce and encourage. Without these we are animals, or even worse, machines, grazing on the life-force of the planet for no purpose.

This could lead to celebrating things that are very dominant in Human culture which are potentially quite destructive, such as selfishness, overbearing egos, power-hungriness etc.

It’s only really context that moves a lot of these things from acceptable levels to unacceptable levels, so I think they need to be encouraged where they can be used positively. Otherwise you are acting against god-knows-how-many years of natural selection and saying ‘The current version of the human is flawed’.

Laugh at these flaws, for there absurdity, but accept them.

Our friends are the people we know whose flaws we are willing to accept.

Our loved ones are the people we know whose flaws we take joy in.

Never tell someone else how they should love.

Art, music, nature, friends, food, walks in the country, cooking (or whatever) all the things that give us some level of unexplainable enjoyment are probably a little bit more important than ensuring your organisations profit levels are meeting targets.

But in real terms you can’t do these things all the time, and we do have a responsibility to society to be productive (many years ago this would have been directly making food, nowadays we indirectly do it within the industry framework we sit on).

Posting to keep abreast of things in here ...

And also, Volcano Rabbit! Awesome ... !

Will we be able to get a big net in Adventure mode, then trawl the world collecting all the rare and wonderful creatures we come across?

Keeping up with my daily posting ... I am now trying out a bit more careful painting of my previous dogman sketch.

I am quite liking the way it is starting to turn out. Not sure if I am handling the fur well or not.

Happy to receive criticism.

Yes, Balathustrius, that is indeed awesome.

I can't even begin to fathom how you paint so well.

I agree witih Deon, it is inspiring.

This sounds and looks fantastic so far, will keep an eye on this.

Time for a new round of predictions then? I predict February 14, unless toady finds a special someone to spend that particular day with in the meantime.

Which,

(if the chinese cookery pamphlet that came out of my monthly food magazine subscription is anything to go by)

Is (Chinese) New Year!

Which means the new year predictions were right all along ... (!?)

its shiny, so i'm willing to overlook the possible innacuracy.

I'm sure this is one of the stated clauses of the contract you get given when they issue you with an Artistic Licence  ;)

Maybe you could try these as suggested by Davions Post earlier in another thread ... the Loomis ones are (free) downloadable .PDFs and look quite informative, especially for accurate pencil sketching of general figures etc.

The foot needs work there mendonca, its at an unnatural angle...
Aside from that, it looks pretty good.  I like the shading style in it.

I'm actually trying to work out how you do it, cause mine isn't all that good and takes awhile.

Thanks for the comments, chaps.

Yeah, maybe the foot is wrong.

The shading style is quite simplistic, in this case I just used the default set of purply/blues from the Photoshop 'Swatches' (4 or 5 shades) and built up from the dark bits to the light bits, imagining the light source sitting to the ninja's left and slightly in front.

I have the darker outlines / shades and lighter details sat on a layer above the solid blues. I also add 'hatched' higlights / lowlights to this detail layer in a fine brush as I see fit to blend in the zones and try to make it so you can see the shapes that I am intending to show.

You end up with a messy, ineffective blob of shapeless blues on one layer (all drawn over a 'skeleton' of the form), which is refined with the detail layer sat over the top. All together they look a bit more effective. Then I just threw a background behind it all.

Don't know if that makes sense?

I'm going to go through some of the reference material from the first page of this thread, as I am on a personal quest to get to a stage where I can use colour / tone to define shapes rather than having to explicitly draw lines.

Edit:

Thanks, I'll have a play with that. Finding some success with the scratchboard tool, initially.

Not too happy with how I am doing it at the minute, but I'll keep at it, post the results of my endeavours soon.

It is probably a question of practice, my background in drawing is largely based on biros and notepads, during phone calls at work ...

Completely unrelated, but I drew something else (my first go in photoshop) ...

I thought I would try and display visually why the current fluid dynamics system is not that realistic when you channel out the final wall to a water source ... hopefully shows why you should get quite a bit of pressure to fill your channel relatively quickly ...

Today I learnt a little bit about the benefits of Corel Painter over GIMP ...

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

However I find I can not seem to successfully colour something without bringing forward the lines from my 'sketch' to define the shape of the creature I am drawing. (they are but 'blobs' without the lines).

Maybe I'm too lazy to render properly and thoroughly (after all I quite like some of my line drawings!) ... need to work that one out ...
