Oh my gods.  That looks incredible, RB. Just amazing work... I like the upper right the best, with the lower right being the VERY close runner up... The variation on those walls is quite nice. I'll be installing your package now. Does it work by default with 40d16, or will I have to do some tweeking?

No Dwarf Manager love for 40d16?

Got my roomate into it, and I swear he's doing even better at the game than I am now. He's been playing two days and utterly loves the game.

Okay, I'm trying desparately to get DM up and running for 40d16. It seems I'm failing heartily. Has anyone done this? I attempted it, but it seems I'm failing to understand something.

I've followed the instructions in the memory layout files.

Here's what it spat out at me:

I attempted to put this into the file, but it just crashes when I 'load from'

I love that they attempted to sell you Schrodinger's cat.

You just HAD to look inside it, didn't you?

BTW, that cage should've been made of pitchblende to make it work best.

Pitchblende? that bit I don't get.

Well, they didn't LABEL it properly. If it had said 'Nickle Cage of Uncertainty'-- Well, you can bet I'd not have opened it. I would've created a whole museum around it!

They look at what they brought on the map and what they left with, so yes if all you're buying is cages they might be considering it a 'loss' and get peeved. But honestly animals are pretty cheap, 2 or 3 stonecrafts each so as long as you buy other stuff and let them leave with a significant profit margin they'll keep coming back with bigger caravans.

Oh CRAP. Are you telling me I have to purchase a significant amount from the traders, or the *beepbeepbeeps* will stop showing up? Ummn... Excuse me... I have to go start doing some major industry.

So... Let me get this straight.

Caravans bring schloads of critters to me... but, the idiots aren't smart enough to check weather.com first, and most of the critters die off.. (Which, by the way, apparently causes huge lag upon the caravan hitting the map, I just discovered).

Then, they decide 'oh what the hey, we'll cut our losses and just sell the cages...'... So now I can purchase these relatively cheap cages, melt them down or whatever, and I get free corpses.

I don't have a problem with this.

Thank you for the suggestions... But that still leaves the question... Why did I get an ex-cat free with purchase?

So, I decided to try out the new development release., genned a new world, and established:

Glimmerfortress the Legendary Gear-Song of Treasures

The first two seasons are completely uneventful, really. Standard getting to know-the-countryside and mountain they live in. This site was unique for me as it's my first site where 90% of the water on the map is frozen for 3 seasons out of the year, and there is also a crevice.. Possibly a bottomless pit, I'm not sure, so this will have many new attributes for me to play with... The mountain itself is VERY steep. I wanted to see how well the game would run with the new graphics and these additional burdens. It's also a 9x9 area. -- It's running great, by the by.

Finally, the traders get there.. All that manages to make it to me are 2 Dwarven mules... Fine, maybe they sent me a small shipment, no problem.

But hey... I don't have much to trade.. So I purchase a sack of seeds to use at my eventual dyer.. An investment, I feel... and on a whim, I purchase 1 nickel cage.

This is where things get unique. It was billed as 'nickel cage' and only appraised as being worth 20.

Lo and behold... I get it inside, open it up, and peer in on accident at some point, only to discover that, within, IS A DEAD CAT.

Now, is this some special 'free with cage' type of deal the Dwarves offer, am I being sent a message by the local Dwarven Mafia, or... or what?  Also... How do I remove said dead cat from cage?

(Seriously.. WTF?)

Okay. I'm afraid, but I have to ask... Kittens of war?

I only recently returned to DF after a few months absence, having had my computer melt down. I love this game in all ways, as it sates a lot of my gaming needs at once.

Only tonight did I discover the development releases... Toady and all who have worked on this... I just want to tell you I'm amazed. I've not tested it very far yet, but *IMMEDIATELY* I went from 25 FPS on 40d, to 100+ FPS... a 4x increase. My dorfs are running around at breakneck speeds. I barely know what to DO! I'm half tempted to slow the game down as I'm not used to this pace.

I will continue to play and do the bug report thing... I used to think dorfs were slow and plodding... These buggers can MOVE!  This game went from a leasurely 'ho hum' pace, to.. wow!

   Rion Wulfe

(Almost in tears over this, I swear. Kudos to the speedup alone!)
EDIT:

I just updated to 40d16 from 40d15, and raised max framerate higher. It's bubbling out around 150fps on my crappyish computer. Some amazing improvements here. I played for an hour or two with a map I brought in from 40d, and had zero issues or problems. The zoom feature is great, not sure what other issues I should be looking for. Everything seems to be running peachy, to me, but I'm not as 'deep' into the game as some might be. Still tweeking around with where I want the framerate to want to be so *I* am comfortable, heh.

I also put my own text tileset in (I use VGA9x16, because it reminds me of an old vidcard I used to have, which I loved its font, with the little bit inside of the 0. Heh.)

You can likely find Dungeon Keeper and DK2 on Amazon.com. That said, however, good luck getting them to run on modern computers. They simply weren't programmed to run on modern processors, so expect a challenge.

I'm new here, in case that isn't blindingly obvious... However, I wanted to express my admiration and thanks to Toady for creating this masterpiece of a game. It's complex beyond all hopes and dreams, and as someone who loved games such as Dungeon Keeper in the past, I can only say I hope he continues to develop this game.

Also, to all of those in the community surrounding DF, thank you. There's a myriad of wonderful tools out there to expand one's experience, and the wiki is a LIFE SAVER.

Please, keep up all of the good work.
