DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: You are all monsters.
« on: October 21, 2010, 10:29:47 am »
I had a revelation today.

In my forts, it seems like every single immigrant I get has 20 pets associated to him on the way to the fort. It's like they come traipsing through the forest, find an elf caravan along the way, and buy EVERY DAMNED ANIMAL THEY CAN before they arrive at my fort.

It'd be fine if they just brought the animals with them, and then let me decide what to do with them. But no. They name them. They love them. They squeeze them.

So today, when I was managing my fort, I had one wander into my atom smasher while I was clearing some rubble. It walked in with a hauler... so my brain suddenly decides to speak up to me, for once, and tells me to lock the doors against pets. The puppy gets stuck. Everyone else leaves.

And I told them to pull the lever on the way out.

Thusly, a puppy was gone. Then I got an idea. I could make an atom smasher at my fort's entrance, with a narrow 'doorway' in and out.. A sort of puppy filter. It could stop all the critters from wandering into my fort, but let the people pass.... Too bad I cannot just drop them into a 20 foot pit, and then butcher the corpses... But NO, they get attatched and want graves for the little fuzzballs.

Damned elf-tendencies, I tell you. They''re MEAT, toss'em on the fire! Be a dwarf, tell your friends that Fluffist MacDoggson tasted AWESOME with beer batter.

DF General Discussion / Re: Diversified...?

Very nice break down of possible reactions, and ones I have personally experienced.

I do find it amusing that dwarven science ALWAYS has a body count. Higher science == more dead bodies. which explains why magma is the apex of dwarven tech. Magma and alcohol.

Dear Urist,

I, your Overlord and One True God, have removed the ability to breed from all cats for a reason. When you come to My Chosen Land, please, for the love of Me, DO NOT bring cats with you. One or two is fine. But inevitably, each group seems to bring 10 cats with them. One cat is sufficient to de-verminize my entire fort. I hate cats. The next Migrant that brings a cat is going to receive five metric tons of Magma for a birthday present. I will not be held responsible for the deaths that result in this migrant's friends and family.

If the cat should survive, I will then butcher it, and make a waterskin from it's flesh.

   Thank you,

      Rion Wulfe

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Charcoal Bug(?)
« on: September 21, 2010, 11:24:55 am »
I've dumped a whole bunch of charcoal (50 or so pieces) in my quantum stock pile, the problem is now my smelter doesn't seem to recognize it as fuel, I've already unforbid it, and it shows up as a building material for walls.  Is there something I'm doing wrong or should I just not dump any more charcoal?

I didn't see... but did you reclaim the items after dumping? When you dump an item, it gets a 'forbidden' flag set on it. You need to clear that for the items to be touchable by dwarves again.

I can't remember the key sequence right now, but it's in the same menu as mass dumping.

I gotta say, this is some amazing work, Shagomir. Is there any way to get a copy of Europe again, so we can have multi-sized instances of it? Or did it get posted and I missed it?

I'm 100% sure the original of this is about Eve. Had to say, I was almost offended when I saw it ripped for DF and other games, even though of all the games out there, DF *may* be the closest to match... However, in Eve, there really is a guy at the top with  bulldozer, waiting to run your ass over. Repeatedly.

DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.31.12 Released
« on: July 26, 2010, 02:10:44 pm »
Holy heck. Elves spoke to me. I've *never* seen them come to me and complain about the forests before. I'm going to have to kill them all for *DARING* to speak to the mighty Dwarven Nation, of course... but still, it was a pleasureable new experience.

Now to start the magma pumps.

Sorry, couldn't resist. *lurks more*

Thank you, chmod, for all the work you've done on this wonderful tool. It makes managing larger (over 20! Gah.) populations of Dwarves possible.

Thank you to everyone who posted information as to .11 so quickly. Nothing to see here beyond that, move along! *waves flags to redirect traffic*

I never, in all my years, thought I would see the blending of Star Control and Dwarf Fortress.

I am fearful, intrigued, and strangely excited, and suddenly have the strangest desire to mod StarCon. I agree. You win your own intertube, in my not very humble opinion. Well done. This pretty much covers digging too Deep, too.

DF General Discussion / Re: Show us YOUR dwarven beard!
« on: July 20, 2010, 11:05:58 pm »
I can do a pretty good dwarf beard.. Had about 2 inches at one point, but all my food began to have the texture of shredded wheat, so I trimmed back down to a thin beard I like. I'll see if I can get some pics.
