Sirus is correct here.  What Sirus is trying to say (unless I am equally confused) is that too much of an "us vs. them" or "my side vs. your side" is not good.  There are no "sides", or "them".  Both people have a difference of opinion based on what seems to them to be logical and obvious reasoning.

Exempli gratia:
Pro-life:  Murder is wrong, you should not be allowed to kill people simply because you choose to do so.
Pro-choice:  Forcing a woman to have a baby against her will is wrong, you should not be able to make her have a child if she does not want to.

It is baffling to X why it is impossible for Y to see that.  They are not "stupid", or "evil".  They just disagree.

Ok; except maybe the rape comment was stupid.  He was probably referencing vaginal changes associated with female arousal (such as pH modification and movement of the cervix to be closer to the semen) increasing the odds of pregnancy.  But no, those tiny changes do not have appreciable impact.  Rape generates pregnancy about 6.4% of the time, consensual sex 3.2% (j.Human Nature, 2003).  The belief is that rape victims are less likely to be on birth control.

Also, Toady has been in here twice already.  I can't believe he gave two strikes.  Can I try and return us to the topic at hand?

The latest numbers I saw places Obama at 47.2% and Romney at 44.7%.  This blows my mind because I'm in MN and everyone is so blue it seems unbelievable to me that it's so close.  Someone above was also from MN.  So MN represent!  Woo!  In my mind, both Obama and Romney could use more courting of moderates.  I haven't seen any of that thus far and it's really the only voting block up for grabs.

Really? I mean, really? You don't see how that's any different from something like, say, this?

Both statements strike me as total bullcrap from where I'm sitting.

Which is why specifics matter. Why does person A believe X, why does person B believe Y. There are certain beliefs that are either factually incorrect or provably harmful to wider humanity with very little granted in return besides the satiation of somebody's ego. I don't see what your point is other than people believe different things.

Do you have any specific examples to the contrary?
Afraid not, though the recent Biden "chains" comment might come close, and even that is a stretch. What exactly would I input in Google looking for examples, anyway? "liberals not decrying their own"?

If you can't provide examples your ideas are less clear. It's easy to toss out "YOU'RE ALL RIGHT AND WRONG" but those words don't actually mean anything without concrete substance behind them.

try to deflect with poorly reasoned accusations of "liberals do bad things too! (we just don't have many non-manufactured examples, but they exist, so shut up forever)".
I'm gonna assume that that's not some sort of insinuation, because I realize that I can have a quick temper and want to avoid launching some sort of flame war.

I was specifically speaking of how conservatives respond to whatever the latest kerfuffle is, but I also find your claim was poorly reasoned. Is that flame war material to you?

Well, I haven't posted in a 40d## thread because there is little I can think of saying besides "good work"...but the updates you have done so far have look extraordinary on my end.  Without sacrificing any actual game features (ie. Temperature, Weather, Economy set to YES) and with:
Partial:0
Thread Priority:High
FPS:0 (Unlocked)

I'm getting:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
At startup.
FPS:  138,423
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
A "typical" DF game start (3x3, river with HFS, "play now").
FPS:  1,520
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The most brutal starting conditions I could come up with (16 x 16, as many Z levels as I could find (19), every game feature present, spending all my starting points on cats (you get 187)).
FPS:  83
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
The Reinhammers Fortress posted earlier (213 dwarves, 181 animals, no magma I could see, but water was moving/being pumped).
FPS:  27

I haven't had time to play up a whole new fortress (I just deleted d18 and dropped down d19), but assuming d19 and d18 perform the same I was getting ~120 FPS with a "standard" DF game (100-105 dwarves, ~45 animals, a 3x3 location with a River and HFS).  If the 2010 changes don't jazz up the FPS (and you've got about 20 to spare) people with a similar set-up could play a normal fortress all the way through maintaining an average FPS of 100 the entire time.  Which is what I've been doing with the 40d.## series so far.

And that's pretty darn impressive.

I do get an odd little bit of graphical corruption in non-play screens (like the status screen or the start screen) where the graphics stick around after closing.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Adjusting Partial:1 or Partial:20 or STANDARD doesn't seem to help with this.  This does not happen during gameplay and doesn't really bother me...but FYI since it wasn't in d18 and you're thinking of tweaking the windows version.  Also, you now have to hit enter at the "Ending game..." screen on abandon or it doesn't advance to "Your settlement has been abandoned" (here you can hit enter or space as normal to advance).  d18 did that as well, but I don't think 40d did.  It's not a big deal and may be known.

DF Modding / Re: Different Civilization Graphics
« on: March 05, 2010, 02:10:47 am »
Does anyone have any graphics for ANY civilizations other than the normal ones?
I know there are some Orc ones and I have been searching for hours and found people that had them and PMed them but no reply.
So if anyone has any graphics for different civs I would really like to have them.
Thanks!

Check out this thread:

Chariot made many of them and you may find the one you want here.  If not, you can always make your own by following the same method.

Right, all done. Over to Toady.

Thanks Baughn, appreciate your hard work!

40d17 is basically working fine, now. Toady has a bit of cleanup to do in adventure mode - which works, by the way, it just occasionally drops keys if you're too fast - and I'm trying to figure out why world-gen is slower than it could be, but it shouldn't be long.

Didn't see anything specifically saying thanks in this thread anyway, so I just wanted to quickly say Thank You Baughn!  I'm sure everyone appreciates the hard work you've put into the improvements!  The 40.d## series benefited greatly from your help!

Again, with the above quote in mind, I didn't see the Advisor...is he out?  Do the raws also indicate that we will now house the diplomat and liason if we get the king, or are those just for current civ level stuff right now?
Yeah, the advisor used to be a weird hard-coded elevation of the liaison, and I didn't want to mess around with that, so the advisor is gone.

I didn't see the Philosopher...did they get cut as well?

I kind of liked them...they added a touch of class and (I liked to imagine) an important cultural element.

DF General Discussion / Re: Dwarf Fortress Talk: Topic Discussion
« on: January 13, 2010, 08:58:12 pm »
Why not The Future of Mechanics?

Some example topics would be:
What do you envision it being able to do and not do in the future.  Is it finished as is?
If not, what else would you like to see it do?  Where do you feel the ceiling lies?
Do you feel the classic dwarves making rock/stone/steel golems is more of a magical or mechanical feature?
Do you like the idea of a magic vs. science universe, or one where the two coexist better?

If not, how about Interracial Children?  This could be rolled into the Multi-Racial Fortress topic as well.

Some example topics would be:
Would you allow it?  Do you think it's more trouble than it's worth?
What would you envision half-elven/half-dwarven children to be?  Abominations that must be killed with fire or mere oddities not worthy of note?  Would you see them as being common (since elves live so long) or rare (since the two cultures are rarely compatible)?
How about half-goblin/half-dwarf?  With all the child snatching/goblin raiding going on do you see these as common?  Would they be reviled by both civs or admired for combining dwarven ingenuity with goblin ruthlessness?
There are excellent opportunities for interesting stories to be found in those combination, among others.
Using the current like/dislike system, would simulated discrimination/acceptance be worth the effort it took to include it?

It would be cool to read "was disgusted to see a half-goblin eating in the same dining room lately."  or "was overjoyed to be accepted by one of his parental civilizations!"

This is an interesting idea.  The movie itself did have a pretty ham-handed message to it, but if you can stomach that without flinching or rolling your eyes at the cornier lines (un-obtanium, anyone?) it is worth the price of admission.  Just realize you're paying for the visuals, not the plotline.  The aliens apparently live in an LED forest and the network trees look kind of like willows with LED light strings for branches.  The humans don't appear to see these.  I kind of like the idea of elves seeing everything plantlike as if it was covered in LED lights.  It makes the sudden darkening when you cut down a tree or bulldoze a clearing seem more dramatic than if you look at it as merely cutting lumber for housing or clearing land for farming, and sets the issue ripe for conflict.  In this case, the trees had nerve fibers so their roots could interact, but you could rig something up with elven magic if you liked.

Oh, and the movie seems to imply they reproduce via the same method as humans.  At least, if the position the two main characters wake up in is any indication.  But I digress.

DF General Discussion / Re: What turns you off about DF?

You know you can disable the economy, right? Toady pretty much knows it's broken. You can also have the economy without coins at all.

But yeah, the pathfinding is probably the biggest killer there is. Certainly the one that's talked about most.

Yeah, taking out the economy and/or fluid dynamics makes my FPS  :) er , but then I feel like I'm losing out on a big chunk of what Toady wants the game to be.  There are a bunch of people kicking around pathfinder improvements here:

http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?topic=43265.0

that may or may not go anywhere.  But if anyone wants to take a look they've got a lot of brainstorming going on.  I have a lot of faith Toady will get to it in good time...40d16 is already mountains better than 40d.

But if I could get back to the OP for a moment...

I guess the biggest problem I have right now is the large amount of processing power it takes to handle busy-work in a mature fortress.  My FPS can drop from the 900's to the 40's with the same video settings when you take the 100 dwarf minimum to "obtain the current game features" (which I think are mainly nobles) and the economy hits.  When every dwarf scampers back and forth grabbing a single coin it's a pathfinding nightmare on top of an already burdened system.  This is the biggest personal barrier I'm having.  I usually abandon at that point.

As far as new users go I can see how the learning curve would be a little steep...an in game tutorial (as has been suggested)would take care of all of this in an instant...even if it's just:  "Hit d twice to dig.  Hit < and > to navigate Z levels.  Hit B to build."  The rest seems to follow logically.

Other than that, it seems like Mr. Adams has his finger on the pulse of what needs work.  The underground followed by sieges seems like an excellent development path.

DF General Discussion / Re: 40D## macros
« on: August 21, 2009, 06:34:03 pm »
Wow that worked like a charm!  Much better than I thought it would.

I got pretty good results from this by setting [MACRO_MS:0] in init.txt, took maybe 30 seconds.  Still fighting with making my own though.
