DF Modding / How to make crystal glass blocks?
« on: December 18, 2008, 02:18:14 pm »
I'm editing the smelter, and was trying to figure out a way to make crystal glass blocks for an adventurer's fortress I was making.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Miserable Dwarves make the best swimmers
« on: December 18, 2008, 01:12:06 am »
So, a Craftsdwarf fails to make an artifact after being possessed, and gets upset. He no longer eats or sleeps or even drinks. He decides that his life is no longer worth living since he couldn't make a bunch of crap that no one would wear or ever use in their lifetime, so he decides to jump in the lake and drown himself.

I only noticed him on accident, seeing a "Help, I'm drowning" background. I look, and he's right next to the pump I was planning to drown him with. Talk about irony. So, he thinks he's going to drown...

He's now a Novice Swimmer, and I figure I might as well try and preserve his life and drain the square into his little house. He manages to get some air before I declare this act utterly useless.

I'm messing around and then

A vile force of darkness has appeared!

I fight off the siege, losing 2 champions to an Elite Bowman, and injuring 1... or 2, I forget because he's all healed up in like 3 days (He broke his hip like a senior citizen). I mourn the death of my fallen champions, showing my sadness as I forcibly lock random dwarves into a room to train for the military.

A while later, after some messing around with a perpetual motion machine, I look around for the Craftsdwarf. He's simply miserable, starving, dehydrated, drowsy, WINDED?

He's also a Competent Swimmer. I really wish he would live...

Oh well, my swimming training room is almost complete.

DF Gameplay Questions / No rough gems?
« on: December 16, 2008, 11:03:26 pm »
I'm running an above ground fortress, but I've stumbled upon a problem:

One of my workers was taken by a fey mood. This wouldn't normally be bad, except that this guy wants something I can't get: Rough gems.

I've tried to make raw green glass as a replacement, but it just won't work. Is there anything else I can do? Also note that I've already build my insane asylum, just in case.

Roll To Dodge / Sell-out's RTD Turn 31 and Death of an Old Man!
« on: November 07, 2008, 11:44:21 am »
Hopefully I have not made a grievous error and sentenced myself to disgrace, but I have, alas, fallen to the succubus known as RTD. It has perked my interest enough to control such a world based on dice rolls and insanity, ergo my selling out. And so, I bring to you:

webadict's RTD

All rolls are on a 6-sided die. As with most RTD, the rolls follow this form:

1-Major Failure
2-Failure
3-Partial Failure
4-Success
5-Major Success
6-Overshot

However, as die rolls can be modified, if the roll goes below 1, it will be classified as an Epic Failure. This is [usually] Bad!
Also, if a roll goes above 6, it will be classified as an Epic Overshot. This is [usually] Good!

The situation is that you are in a white room, with no visible light source, despite the fact that it is bright enough to see. There is a single door on one side of this room, and there are 7 other people in the room with you, just as lost as you, as everyone is just starting to wake up. Everyone is dressed in their pajamas. In the middle of the room is a chest with an old-school, giant padlock (the kinds with the giant keyholes in the front) on it. There is a recording playing the same words over and over: "Escape the maze..." There is nothing else noticeable about the room at this point.

Your goal: To escape. Most people prefer to do this alive, but it's really up to you. First to the finish wins!

So... yeah, if you wanna start just say so. I'll only allow 8 people to play, since I hear it takes forever to roll. But yeah, have fun and try not to die*.

1. Kashyyk
2. Frelock
3. Dark
4. Jay Kayell
5. Boogerman
6. Akroma
7. Nirur Torir
8. Boksi
*We'll get to that later...

Just a quick question, if I kill a pet's owner, does the pet become butcherable stray?

DF Gameplay Questions / Axe Dwarf won't pick up Axe?
« on: September 26, 2008, 11:23:10 am »
So, instead of my Axedwarf being useful, he constantly stands around an axe, trying to pick it up, failing, walking two steps, then trying to pick it up again, in an epic fail circle. Is there any way to fix this? Or is he permanently in a stupid circle?

DF Gameplay Questions / Immigrants?!?
« on: September 23, 2008, 10:10:57 am »
How does one get more migrants each season. For me, it seems to be a hit-or-miss kind of a thing. Except that I miss more often than not.

Does anyone have any clue on what causes migrants to find your fortress an attractive place to live? Or is it just random?

DF Gameplay Questions / Price shifts in trading agreements
« on: September 23, 2008, 01:35:27 am »
I noticed something rather odd the last time I traded, and was wondering whether anyone knew a straight up formula for this, but:

In my fortress, trade agreements with the Humans and Dwarves tend to give us cheaper things and they pay more for things. I've also given them about 600,000 gold...piece things in offerings. (Don't ask, just don't). Now, when asking for things, I receive some sort of sweet deal on things. I can ask for things with the price changing nominally or not at all, and when they ask for things at max level, the price is nearly 250% (And minimums are at 150%). So, based on these observations, I theorize the following:

The more offerings you give a certain civilization, the better (and cheaper) trade agreements are made.

I've also learned that having over 9,000,000 total value won't increase my immigration rate. I rarely get immigrants. (Population at about 70-ish)

DF Bug Reports / Captain of the Guard becomes a Captain of the Guard
« on: September 19, 2008, 07:35:59 pm »
Whenever my Captain of the Guard increases in a particular skill, instead of saying "Captain McGuardy, Captain of the Guard is more experienced" the game insists on saying "Captain McGuardy has become a Captain of the Guard."  ...Which is a little less obvious than saying s/he is more experienced.
