General Discussion / Re: Things that made you go "WTF?" today o_O
« on: January 02, 2018, 01:14:07 pm »
So I was driving home from work at 4am and found a row of bins which had been knocked over. It'd say about six or seven bins spread over half a block which had all been tipped forward off the pavement into the street.

My initial thought was 'Well if it takes one jackass to knock over some bins, I guess it only takes one random to fix them', and promptly pulled a u-turn, threw my indicator on and hoisted them back onto the sidewalk.
Great stuff: My car wasn't stolen while I was doing this.

But now I've got a vague moral conundrum: Trolley-problem wise.

See, I left some trash piles on the road from where the bins fell. I'm all for lifting wheelie bins, but I'm not about to go handling random people's trash.
Thing is, these piles contain glass and whatnot. So I'm in a situation where I could have potentially made the road more dangerous for whatever half-asleep people would swerve around a fallen bin but will unintentionally blow through a trash pile and potentially blow a tyre.

So I guess the question is whether a half-measure of goodness is really a good thing at all.
Also brings up utilitarianism vs deontology etc.

Every year is born in darkness.
Fuck that we birth the new year in gigantic fantastic fireworks. That's being born in a ton of colourful light.
Brilliant and fleeting, just like my hope for the new year.

Sirus your spoiler title was too attention-grabbing. I was defenceless.

You should put that in this year's time capsule

Whom?
Fabulous bile?

I mean, there’s that game where factories are made of paperclips but uh.. probably not really feasible

Value drift = their goals have misaligned away from yours.
I kind of prefer it. You wouldn’t have an AI’s internal framework call them “gone rogue”

Another thing re: self-replication:
Hazard management is perhaps more important. The wiki recommends to stick both at 6 or so, and take all points out of wires, diggers and factories because finding matter via speed & exploration is much slower. The latter three only really need points popped into them very occasionally and for short periods.

Lastly i’d consider Losing to the drifters to be the “good ending”. Synthetic individualism yay!

Blockchain wireheading?

1045
Yes but Reelya it'll be hard enough getting the owl to make paperclips. Why bother speculating about containment?

I have to say, I own Superintelligence, and the phrase:
though I suppose that makes for a dryer and more boring book to sell.
Severely underestimates how frustrating this book is to try and read.
This being said I don't generally go in for reading scholarly articles, but boy it flashes me back to trying to hunt down citations for an assignment by poring through word count chaff.

1047
So computers could never be “open goal” oriented?
That’s perhaps more worrying in its own way

Did someone trap you inside a huge coil of steel wire?
Figuratively speaking, yes.
But the proverbial cocoon is that of a clicker game.

I've just started turning the observable universe into paperclips.

Hey, AI guys.

There's a game. It's called 'Universal Paperclips'.

Here's links to the Game and the Topic in OG.
Definitely wanna discuss it with someone, but don't really want to jump into 'spoilers'.

Warnings:
It is a clicklike game and so therefore it's both addictive and time consuming. It's better than the rest of the genre but will definitely eat a few hours.
The good news is that there is an endgame, and dedicated people can reach it rather quickly.

The 'Lategame' section has a research which will start playing music. If you're playing this at work, maybe turn the sound down.
