Just a quick animation/drawing that I just did, entitled: "Well, I'm fucked."
LINK

And for those of you that have not seen it... there is an animated tribute to Morul the dwarf in my sig also...

I think that's a "Elven attack? That's a contradiction in terms!" face.
Yeah pretty much. It is him going "Really? Elves? Attacking?"

My adamantine-clad champion, having just been told that the elves have decided to attack.

Probably the simplest way (from Toady's view) to introduce these sort of late-stage challenges would be a combination of lowering immigration rates, making a legendary dwarf harder to get (and so more valuable) and some (possibly initially contrived) siege system. I'm talking something along the lines of this:

Anything using (non artifact) mechanisms rusts and then eventually fails (with some randomisation thrown in).
The more of a certain civ that a trap has killed, the more likely they are to dodge it next time.

Those 2 simple things would mean that traps and bridges etc would need to be replaced fairly regularly, meaning the (now more valuable dwarves) would be vulnerable more often (might lead to interesting ideas such as having a few soldiers guard them etc). This would mean that there are some disadvantages to having huge numbers of traps and ingenious defences and more advantages to the more risky, 'fun' approach of soldiers as defence.

Basically, to create a game that is eternally a challenge, have a system that is more complex than what people can think about and then throw in randomisation, so that no one solution ever works forever.

How do you get wood?
That's what Viagra is for, Neruz.

But aside from horrible jokes, you can get wood as described previously.

So one of my images is an image of planepacked... presumably at this stage the dwarf would know the shape of the statue... so what is it? Is it a pillar? Or should I just do my own random crazy idea of what is planepacked?

Oh, and also if you are interested in numbers, I have done 4/10 of the images.

Well then put me down for 12-21...

Actually, what happens if I've already drawn an object (in this case an artifact hatch cover and shining suns)? Are we just gonna copy-paste previous artwork? Or should we try to do a new rendition every time?

Also, are you gonna do any? At the moment I am feeling rather lonely...

Not bad. One cell down, many to go.

Still no word from Taisuru. So congrats! Right now you have full credit for that cell.
Would you like me to do another cell? (I probably won't be able to do it immediately).

My interpretation of a grimeling.

Ok, well here you go...

So do you like the drawings?

Well here's what I've done thus far, sans line 3. I may do it as well, but we'll see.

I agree with you (Anu), good sir! However, I am unsure as to how you could make the initial set up different each time (or at least requiring some sort of decision to be made). Perhaps seeds could only be planted in certain types of soil, meaning that the location of you farm plots (and so your fortress) has to be carefully dictated. And then perhaps certain types of soil is extremely dangerous to dig through (due to collapses) and thus must be navigated carefully.

Render however you like, as long as it can be optimized into a visible/uploadable format (PNG, GIF, JPG) for the forum to see.

Oh, I hope you don't mind sharing the cell with someone else. They're only doing a line out of it though. Doesn't hurt, for now, to have different interpretations of the same frame.

And what about Swamp Thing?
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
Right well, I've pretty much done the sketch for the whole thing. I'm just adding in the grimeling and refining it to look all purdy. And I'll upload it as a PNG. One thing is that if you would like to edit it, I might turn off anti-aliasing, to give it a sharp pixel edge.

EDIT: Actually, if the other guy is doing line 3, I'll leave the grimeling to him.

Right, well I've been working on my rendering of 2-11, but I got stuck on one... what the hell is a grimeling? I was gonna depict it as a ball of sludge with eyes...

So is it gonna be a kinda giant statue of a dwarf, but the dwarf has tatoos (engravings) all over his body of all the stuff that has happened thus far? Also, I think your dwarf needs a somewhat wider face...
