Interesting. What I usually do is complely cover the large ares in restricted traffic and make high traffic `roads` through them. Are you saying it`s more efficient to simply make a border of restricted traffic to seal off large areas? What about high traffic designations? How do you set those up?

A second siege just came and killed everyone. My first genuine loss, I guess. Lesson for the future - don't use floodgates for entrance defense, they always get jammed and when you clean it up, some asshole breaks the level. I'm sticking to bridged from now on.

Best part: The ghosts of berzerking dwarfs are very violent, and will injure/kill the remaining people.
Balls...
I just got a migration wave of around 10 dorfs (a very welcome sight). Most of them are now masons, churning out coffins. Top priority now is burial of all the corpses. Some of them are still generating miasma, so that's something else to worry about.

I think its a good thing. This is the first time my fortress actually came close to crumbling. Still isn't over yet. I'll probably start getting swarms of ghosts because I won't be able to bury everyone in time, so they might piss someone off again. Oh well, at least the survivors are now hardened against these kinds of things.

I have a confession. Despite playing (on and off) since 40d, I've never lost a fort to Fun. Usually, I always quit out of boredom and go play adventure mode instead. Well, it finally happened. My current fort, "Deathfloors" had finally tasted true Fun. A siege arrived and I had to face them because a tantruming dwarf had destroyed the lever that shut the floodgates of the main entrance. A whole bunch of soldiers were killed and shit hit the fan. Soon after that, everyone had a flashing red arrow, dwarf were going insane, children were going berserk and beating their parents and everything was getting destroyed. The murders/executions of berserking dwarves was the first wave of death. After that, a whole bunch more died from dehydration due to being stark raving mad (or babies having their mothers die).
Now, my population of 200+ has been reduced to 50-something (most of them children). There is barely anything left of the military, all of the industries are gone, I'm struggling to bury everyone, there is junk everywhere, THE DINING HALL IS FULL OF DEAD BABIES and overall, its not a very fun (but very Fun) time we're having over here. The only luck is that a tantruming dwarf broke a trade depot while human merchants were in it, so I kinda ended up stealing all their stuff by accident. Hopefully, that should keep my food supplies stocked while I get some new farmers.
Sooo, yeah...

Now, I'm tempted to throw in some large, serrated glass disks I got laying around. Betcha' one of them can cut a gobbo clean in half.

The atomsmasher strikes again. I build wall around it and told dwarfs to dump stuff from above to avoid stuff like that. A child went in there for some reason and someone dropped some pants at him knocking his teeth out.

I was atomsmashing some crap and some of it ended up on top of the smasher while it was down. I ordered it to be raised anyways so I could continue. Naturally, everything went flying. A miner who was trying to dump something got catapulted on top of the fort wall. But most impressively...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seriously, what the hell?! A shoe made from cloth (which is basically a sock, I presume) somehow managed to be flung with enough force to break the back of some unlucky soldier who happened to be milling around nearby! Through iron armor!! The good news is that I don't really need to soldier since I can apparently kill goblins by pointing the smasher at them and launching my dirty laundry :/

Yeah, that happens. The question is - does the picture of the artifact depict the picture of the artifact on itself. And does that picture of a picture have a picture of itself on it and does that picture of a picture of a picture...and so on.

Shouldn't there be an option in the 'Z' menu -> Kitchen to disable eggs from cooking?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Selective Atom Smashing
« on: July 27, 2012, 05:40:14 pm »
Haven't tried this myself, but what about putting "The Attic" in the same burrow as a atomsmasher with a regular dump area under it, then assigning some dorfs to it (and give them some food and drink too, I suppose). If the burrow does not include the area where all the goblin loot is, then they would only smash the junk, right?
EDIT: Ninja'd...Anyways, you would also have to assign all the other dorfs to another burrow, so they don't come into "The Attic".

DF Gameplay Questions / Excuse me, but why is everyone on fire?
« on: July 23, 2012, 06:05:39 pm »
Okay, so I had a bunch of forges and smelters set up at an edge of a magma pipe. It was working nice and safe for a while, but just now, every dwarf that comes to the edge of the magma has his/her clothes catch on fire and dies. I guess it realistic, yeah, but it didn't happen before, so what gives? I've already lost two furnace operators, two architects (who were trying to build a smelter) and a miner who was digging around the edge (and a couple of babies too, but that's not important).  There's a couple of fire imps swimming around deeper in the tube, but it doesn't look like they're bothering anyone. Other than that, there is nothing suspicious about the tube or the dwarfs that it burned.

EDIT: Nevermind, it is the goddam fire imps after all.

Can they access the building site from north, south, east or west? I don't think they can build from a diagonal, so if they can't stand right next to it, they will stand on top of it. That's what happened to me, anyways.

1. Dig pit
2. Put spear traps
3.???
4. Profit!

Basically, just dig an 'access stairway' shaft going down 50 levels and use it to dig out each level individually. Once each level has been dug out, channel out its floor. Put upright spear/spike traps at the bottom. Connect all the spear/spikes to a level and pull it once to deploy them.

My current fort has a goddess of darkness named 'Sod Murkytwilight the Cloak of Dusk'. I dunno why, but I find that a pretty cool name.
