DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first tantrum spiral
« on: July 30, 2012, 07:46:05 pm »
I have a confession. Despite playing (on and off) since 40d, I've never lost a fort to Fun. Usually, I always quit out of boredom and go play adventure mode instead. Well, it finally happened. My current fort, "Deathfloors" had finally tasted true Fun. A siege arrived and I had to face them because a tantruming dwarf had destroyed the lever that shut the floodgates of the main entrance. A whole bunch of soldiers were killed and shit hit the fan. Soon after that, everyone had a flashing red arrow, dwarf were going insane, children were going berserk and beating their parents and everything was getting destroyed. The murders/executions of berserking dwarves was the first wave of death. After that, a whole bunch more died from dehydration due to being stark raving mad (or babies having their mothers die).
Now, my population of 200+ has been reduced to 50-something (most of them children). There is barely anything left of the military, all of the industries are gone, I'm struggling to bury everyone, there is junk everywhere, THE DINING HALL IS FULL OF DEAD BABIES and overall, its not a very fun (but very Fun) time we're having over here. The only luck is that a tantruming dwarf broke a trade depot while human merchants were in it, so I kinda ended up stealing all their stuff by accident. Hopefully, that should keep my food supplies stocked while I get some new farmers.
Sooo, yeah...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Cloth shoes are serious business
« on: July 29, 2012, 11:42:48 pm »
I was atomsmashing some crap and some of it ended up on top of the smasher while it was down. I ordered it to be raised anyways so I could continue. Naturally, everything went flying. A miner who was trying to dump something got catapulted on top of the fort wall. But most impressively...
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Seriously, what the hell?! A shoe made from cloth (which is basically a sock, I presume) somehow managed to be flung with enough force to break the back of some unlucky soldier who happened to be milling around nearby! Through iron armor!! The good news is that I don't really need to soldier since I can apparently kill goblins by pointing the smasher at them and launching my dirty laundry :/

DF Gameplay Questions / Excuse me, but why is everyone on fire?
« on: July 23, 2012, 06:05:39 pm »
Okay, so I had a bunch of forges and smelters set up at an edge of a magma pipe. It was working nice and safe for a while, but just now, every dwarf that comes to the edge of the magma has his/her clothes catch on fire and dies. I guess it realistic, yeah, but it didn't happen before, so what gives? I've already lost two furnace operators, two architects (who were trying to build a smelter) and a miner who was digging around the edge (and a couple of babies too, but that's not important).  There's a couple of fire imps swimming around deeper in the tube, but it doesn't look like they're bothering anyone. Other than that, there is nothing suspicious about the tube or the dwarfs that it burned.

EDIT: Nevermind, it is the goddam fire imps after all.

DF Gameplay Questions / Will giant rattlesnakes lay eggs?
« on: July 22, 2012, 02:54:24 pm »
I got a tame giant rattlesnake from the elves. Can't breed it unfortunately, since I don't have a male (...yet), but giant rattlesnakes eggs would make for a pretty bitchin' breakfast. So, will it lay eggs if I lock it in a room with a nestbox?

DF Gameplay Questions / Soldiers won't wear bone/shell gauntlets.
« on: July 21, 2012, 12:26:40 pm »
My current fort has a bit of a metal shortage,  so I decided to at least give my militia some bone and shell stuff until I can get some goblinite. They have no problems wearing shell leggings, but refuse to equip bone/shell gauntlets. The 'e'quipment  screen in the military menu has the little green checkmark next to the gauntlets, but the dwarfs don't have them in their inventory (they're all in a bin). Naturally, I checked that the gauntlets are accessible and I tried setting their uniforms to 'metal gauntlets' (since the wiki says that bones count as metal) and re-assigning the uniforms, but no luck. Anyone know what's going on? I don't want kobolts cutting their hands off.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Weremonster Party
« on: June 27, 2012, 10:15:34 pm »
I got a quest to kill a werecritter from some peasant. Me and my trusty goblin sidekick traveled to its cave lair, but it seems like it there was a bit of a territorial dispute going on there. Inside the lair, there was a werelizard, a weregila monster and a wererat (the rat was the one I was originally sent to kill). The rat was fighting with the gila monster, but the lizard was seemingly staying out of it. I watched it for a while, but it wasn't going anywhere. They were just biting each other and injecting extract, but there was no serious injuries. Eventually, I got bored and just killed them all. I've seen night creature families before, but those were all the same 'species' and were friendly with each other. I dunno what happened here.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Also, can companions be turned into werecreatures? I've tried letting my goblin buddy be mauled by them, but I haven't got the 'injected with extract' message despite several bites breaking the skin.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Acessing the sewers
« on: June 08, 2012, 10:51:23 pm »
I've got a quest to kill some olm man dude hiding out in a town's sewers. I tried to access them rough the dungeons in the castle, but those were a dead end. I also found some dungeon-type thingy under a temple, but I couldn't explore it because a mummy chased me out. Is there any way to get into the sewers? I'm seeing 'sewer access' markers on the travel map, but they seem to only indicate grates. I know there are occasionally drainage pipes into nearby rivers, but I'm pretty sure you need to breathe underwater/not breathe at all to get through and I'm not ready to vamp myself yet (need to work up those stats, yo).

So, I decided to play around with the new minecart system a little bit. I want to set up a simple route that takes food from the pile near the farms and brings it down one level to the secondary food pile near the kitchens and dining room. The bottom half was carved in natural stone with no problems and looks like a proper continuous track, including the ramps. However, the top half is in the dirt layer and has to be constructed. I don't really understand what all the different directions mean in the construction menu (aside from the corners and intersections) and when I tried to build multiple tiles of track, it appears as disjointed tiles instead of a continuous one. Can someone please explain to me how to properly build the damn thing.

Also, is silver armor any good? I got artifact silver helm and I wanna give it to my militia commander, 'cause he'll look like a pimp.
And finally, can giant mosquitoes breed? I got pair that are somewhat trained and want to try raising them as war animals. (if yes, do they need a nestbox?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Invasion of the ninja snails!
« on: May 28, 2012, 03:43:52 pm »
My very young fort has recently been visited by a Giant Snail. Since this was clearly a great danger to the fort, I sent out my militia-in-training (3 losers swinging pieces of obsidian on a stick). For the next 3 minutes or so they proceeded to chase after it. By that I mean the SNAIL was actually outrunning them and they only got in occasional hits as they were pursuing it. Also, the snail was apparently capable of jumping to dodge their attacks...

It eventually ended with the snail getting its shell ripped off (so, I guess it became a slug) and then getting kicked in the brain by one of the soldiers. Now I wanna know if its possible to tame one. It would sure make a great tank to distract the invaders and draw the fire...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No more self-entombing builders?
« on: May 27, 2012, 09:59:59 pm »
From Toady's post on the front page...
Quote
wall/floodgate/etc. builders often make more reasonable decisions about where to stand to avoid walling themselves in
Does that mean I will no longer have to resort to silly tricks like designating and suspending walls to get the dorfs to stay on the right side?
*sigh* I'm gonna miss those times. (Well, not really...)

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Question about bloodsucking
« on: March 24, 2012, 07:07:59 pm »
I finally managed to get a vampire adventurer and so far things have been pretty good, I guess. But I'm a little confused about how much blood I need to drink. With normal food/drinking, you get a limit of 3 'noms' before you have to fast-travel, right? With blood, I can feed from a single creature dozens of times repeatedly and it doesn't even seem to affect them (they die from suffocation due to me strangling them unconscious or they bleed out from wounds I inflicted earlier). The only time I can drain anything dry is when I feed on them while I'm 'Thirsty' (and even then, it only works on small creatures or those who already lost some blood). So, does bloodsucking only work when I'm thirsty, or is there like a hidden hunger meter that fills up every time I drink someone. (and if there is, is there a limit on how much it can fill up?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Proper burial for a missing miner
« on: March 19, 2012, 06:28:42 pm »
The other day, I ordered my miner to breach a magma pipe for my forges. Expecting it to slowly seep out and allow the dwarf time for escape, I was quite surprised when it rushed out, filling the channel almost instantly and clouding the area in magma mist. Needless to say, the miner didn't make it. Later, I got an announcement that he has been missing for a week, but since his body and all his belongings were consumed by Armok's fiery rock-blood, it wasn't found, so I guess he's not officially dead yet. It won't let my engrave him a slab, so is there any way to declare him s dead, so it lets me engrave one?

I just started up the new version and soon discovered there is a tomb near my starting location. Foolishly, I decided to venture into it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Minotaur attack!
« on: January 07, 2012, 03:31:45 pm »
Didn't expect it to happen so soon. Started my new fort, just building stuff and trying to find ores when I freaking minotaur shows up. It's only my second year and I don't know what he's doing here so early. Maybe it's cause I dug into the third cavern layer and found a candy pillar, so it increased my fortress value or something. My military is completely untrained and has no equipment (I couldn't even find metal on the map). I order the drawbridge to be raised, but several minutes later, I realize that I forgot to connect the bridge to the lever, reminded to me by the minotaur punching a child to death in my meeting hall (ironically, this happened right next to said lever. So, I ended up recruiting 15 unarmed, unarmored and untrained dorfs to go punch him to death. The damn minotaur kills three more and cripples some people before an engraver punches him in the head and kills him instantly.
So, yeah, that was quite fun, in both meanings of the word. I thought that was gonna be the first time I'm gonna get a 'your fort crumbled' ending (I usually abandon out of boredom), but the casualties were surprisingly low. Still doesn't change the fact that my fortress is completely military-less through. I guess I gotta rely on those caravans bringing me metal bars now.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Bandit town
« on: July 29, 2011, 03:22:22 pm »
So, I started a new adventurer and I was asked to kill a bowman for my second quest. As I was on my way to his lair, I got a random encounter. It was the guy I had to kill and a couple of dudes. I kill them and proceed to his camp to loot it. Well, apparently, he didn't want that to happen because the camp was guarded by around 60 dudes. I grinded skills with that adventurer, so I killed them all pretty easily, but it was still crazy. Even bandit quests from lords and ladies don't have that many guys.
It does make me miss dark towers, though. Fighting an entire army by yourself is incredibly fun...
