DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Any way to equip armor as bronze colossus?
« on: September 06, 2009, 10:52:59 am »
So, after getting all my regular adventurers slaughtered by wolves and giants, I finally listened to the little devil on my shoulder and made a Bronze Colossus adventures. It was fun going around towns and killing everything, but then I noticed that I'm still taking some damage from archers and crossbowmen. Nothing serious, but I already lost both of eyes (Thank Armok I don't need 'em) and I'm afraid that some lucky elite crossbowman is gonna knock off my head or limb someday. But, the only think I can use to defend myself is an iron shield, because all human armor shows up as "small" and I can't wear it. Can the BC wear anything at all?

P.S.  Bronze Colossi should be able to pick up ballistae and use them as crossbows. Puny human weapons do not satisfy me.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Help on a Crossbowman.
« on: September 02, 2009, 10:03:06 pm »
I just recently got into playing adventure mode and all of my adventurers (all swordsmen) have been horribly killed by Giants. This time, I decided to go for something different and have a little genocide.
I decided to use a crossbowman because I hoped that the crossbow's range and killing power, combined with legendary ambushing, will make me unstoppable.
But there's one problem. Bolts. I'm pretty sure you can't buy them in stores (at least I haven't seen any), so the only option is to loot them from my humans and dwarves. So, I got a couple of questions.

1) Can you pull out bolts from your enemy's corpse after you kill them?

2) Would a guys with skilled crossbow and legendary ambusher (maybe legendary thrower, but I don't really feel like abusing that) be able to take on a human city/dwarf mountainhome?

DF Gameplay Questions / Staircases in tower building.
« on: August 29, 2009, 08:10:26 pm »
Okay, so I'm building an execution tower in my courtyard (well, it's only 1 tile, so it's more like an execution pillar), but I run into a problem. I build the wall segment on the bottom level, then build an up/down stair beside it. I then ordered another up/down stair to be built on top of the first one, but the dorfs refuse to do it. I assume that, for some reason, they can't get to it.
What is going on here?

DF Suggestions / Dwarven powderkeg mines! *BOOM*
« on: August 28, 2009, 06:57:06 pm »
(It's likely this has been suggested before, so I apologize in advance. I also apologize if this idea sounds too far-fetched. Just remember, it's dwarfs we're talking about here...)

Alright, so dwarfs like to use traps, right? Traps are pretty cool, but they would be way cooler if there were explosions. Basically, you wound need three things, an empty barrel, gunpowder (made at alchemist's workshop or maybe a new type of workshop),  and a mechanism. The powderkeg would be (b)uilt like a regular building and then hooked up to a level. Pulling the level will make it explode (since we're never told what "mechanisms" are, we can assume they could be anything, such as a spark-making thingy). You could also hook it up to a pressure pad and use it as mine. The powderkeg would be right next to the pressure pad, so whatever triggered it will be caught in the explosion. The explosion would cause extreme damage in a certain area around it and would ignite things that are directly next to it.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to get rid of a couple of pesky rocks?
« on: August 27, 2009, 10:11:11 am »
I have a problem in my fortress.
It's not goblins (although they will be if I don't fix this soon), carp or nobles.
It's rocks. There are four of them sitting in the way of my fortifications on my outer wall. I tried designating a dumping zone and ordered the rocks to be dumped, but my dwarfs won't listen. There's like 10 of them with "No Job" and nobody want's do dump them. Both the rocks and the dumping area seem accessible and I check to make sure they aren't forbidden. The dwarfs also refuse to use the rocks for building even though the fortifications are suppose to be made from the same rock (microcline and granite). Also, the rocks are somehow in stacks of two, so is that the cause?
Anyways, how do I get rid of them?

(Holy carp, I think this this is my 4th post on this forum this week. I think I'm just trying to get attention)

It was just an ordinary day in my fortress of Stonehammer when my Gem Cutter  got possessed by unknown forces and claimed a Jewelers Workshop. I was exited to get my first artifact. I looked at his demands...
"rough...colour"
"bars...metal"

Rough gems and metal bars huh?
        I didn't have any rough gems, but I knew where there was a cluster of them in my mines. So he gets a rough topaz and is now waiting for the bar. I though I had a horn silver bar in my stockpiles, but it turned out to be a horn silver BLOCK. Should've payed more attention on the trade screen. I desperately start searching around my fort. Hmmm...a -steel crossbow-? Well, no-one's using it, right? So I order it to be smelted. Urist McSmelter takes it to the magma smelter and begins the process. He finishes and walks away.
I check the smelter with "t". Nothing. I check his inventory. Nothing. Just in case, I check the bar stockpile. Nothing. (My bar pile is a loooooooooong way from my smelter so I would have seen anyone carrying it).
So, I get ready for another death and station my soldiers around the workshop in case he tries to kill someone.
Suddenly, I get a message that my miners, which are digging out new bedrooms, have struck limonite. We're saved! Throwing all those virgins into a magma pipe did work! Armok has smiled upon us and my Gem Cutter gets to live!
I quickly smelt me some iron and the Gem Cutter gets to work. Several days days later he emerges holding Brokendebts, an artifact iron amulet decorated with topaz and worth 84000 dorfbucks.
Brokendebts was stashed away in my finished goods stockpile among all the regular stone amulets and nobody ever spoke of it again.
So, we lost a steel crossbow, found a source of iron, quadrupled the value of our fortress and we all learned a valuable lesson.

The End.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Will my dorfs kill each other while sparring?
« on: August 24, 2009, 03:04:23 pm »
After my first migration wave, me fortress pop went up to 16 and I decided to make some soldiers. I recruited 2 peasants and told them to spar until they became elite wrestlers, then I gave them obsidian swords 8). But now, I'm afraid to let them spar with swords because all they have for armor is leather armor and wooden shields (I made a mistake of giving them them armor and shields too late, so they probably haven't got any armor/shield user yet). So, will they cut each other to pieces or will their wrestling skill allow them to avoid much damage?

EDIT: A stray fire imp just got out of his pipe and caused a !!forest fire!! :o. Fortunately, none of the dorfs were hurt, but the nice field has been turned into a charred wasteland. The little bastard gotta pay. Should my wrestlers engage him in unarmed combat or should they use their swords (and hopefully get some practice with them)? Also, is using a wooden shield against fire imps a bad idea?

DF Gameplay Questions / Some questions about channeling magma.
« on: August 23, 2009, 11:49:22 pm »
Alright, so I decided to build myself some magma forges and stuff just now. The magma pipe is far away from my fort, so I decided to dig a little reservoir and redirect it there. My channel looks something like this...

X||.||X
X||.||X
X||.||X
XO . OX
~~~~~
~~~~~

X - natural wall
|| - floor
. - channel
O - artificial wall (for directing magma into the channel
~ - fiery liquid death fun

The forge would then be built along sides of the magma channel

I read about magma on the wiki and, from what I can understand, it has no pressure (is that true?), so I shouldn't have problems with it overflowing or anything.

But, here's another problem. I have a magma pipe, so I've got an unlimited amount of magma to play, but it refills very slowly right? I can only get to the top level and that would only be enough to channel a little for my workshops (I pray to Armok that it doesn't evaporate or something). And that's only if my workshops are close to the pipe itself (I'm afraid the Fire Imps will come out to play). However I wanna channel  magma even further into my fortress to fill my moat (maybe I'm asking for too much at once here. I can't pump it from below since I don't have any magma-safe materials for the pumps (and my lack of experience with building pumps will probably destroy my fortress).

So...yeah. What should I do?

Thanks in advance!

Ok, so I wanna make a spike pit near the entrance to my fortress with a drawbridge going across it. If I dig a channel, line the botton with upright spike traps, hook 'em up to a lever and then pull that level, will that actually hurt anything that falls on top of them?

Part 2: Okay, here's the basic diagram of the layout I planned for my fortress. Can some of you pros look at it and tell me if there's any flaws or weak points?

   XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX .......
   XO                           OX .......
   X         >>>>>             I ))))))))))))
   X         >>>>>             I ))))))))))))
   X         >>>>>             I ))))))))))))
   XO                           OX .......
   XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX .......

X - wall

>>> - stairs leading down to my fort

O - sniper towers

I - floodgates

)))))) - drawbridge

.... - channel (hopefully lined with Pointy DeathTM)

Basically, the idea is to close the floodgates and raise the drawbridge in case of an attack, sealing the entrance (all dorfs will be told to go indoors of course). This would lead the goblins/elves/whatever, into an alternate entrance which would be a twisted maze full of traps and all sorts of nasty critters (if the elves bring me any). This alternate entrance would also give stranded dwarfs a chance to get in since they won't trigger the traps.

So, what do you think?
Thanks in advance.

Hi everyone. :)
I'm playing my first fort and I found a large gold vein, so I have a bunch of gold nuggets lying around (I also found a tiny cluster of platinum 8)). I decided to make some golden statues and whatnot to spiffy up my fort a little. Unfortunately my  fort is also filled to the brim with gabbro and some other stone (it's green and called oli-something), so every time I tell my mason to make something, he makes it out  of gabbro. I can't get rid of the gabbro because it's pretty much on half the tiles in my fort (the other half is that green stone). I tried setting everything but gold as economic stones, but gabbro isn't even on that list.
I just wanna make some shinies :'(, what should I do?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / My experience playing as a modded Dragon.
« on: September 21, 2008, 08:21:18 pm »
Yeah.
So, I was screwing around with the raws and decided to go play Adventure mode as a dragon...

Take 1: Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Incredibly happy because my mod worked (this is my first mod ever). Have to turn off the game after 10 seconds because I had to do something else.

Take 2: Spawn in a human town. Kill a nearby crossbowman. The building I was in (Mayor's house?) immediately gets swarmed by guards. I get shot. I die.

Take 3: Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Proceed to kill all nearby hippies Elves. Kill about 5 civilians and guards. Get attacked by bowmen. Die.

Take 4: Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Proceed to a nearby Goblin Tower. Start slaughtering everything in sight. Kill about 40 goblins (mostly children :o). Get over-exerted and watch as my mighty dragon gets the living shit slowly beaten out of him by 2 goblin children. A goblin (cross)bowman comes and finishes me off. I die.

Take 5: Complete dragon overhaul:
                         Increased damage for the main attack
                         Added a second main attack with high damage and [BURN] property (pathetic attempt to simulate fire breath)
                         Gave him a pair of wings and the [FLIER] tag (I didn't know you can fly in adventure mode!)
Spawn in a Forest Retreat. Go wander outside and play with my upgraded dragon. Go kill some dwarfs at a Mountain Hall. Quickly run before any crossbowman show up. Go inside a human town. Spawn in a mayors house. Try to exit. Dragons can't open doors...*facepalm*.

Yeah...That was fun. Post your amusing stories here too.

DF Modding / I there any way to make a creature pick up items?
« on: September 21, 2008, 05:45:52 pm »
Hi.
So, I just modded dragons to be playable in Adventure mode and been having great fun. But the onl thing I can currently do is kill, kill and kill some more (gets boring after a while). And I can't pick up any leftovers either. So, is it possible to make it so I can pick up body parts and whatsnot? And is it possible to make it so I can EAT them? That would be so cool.
Thanks in advance.

DF Modding / Playble Dragons mod?
« on: September 21, 2008, 11:20:08 am »
Hey all.
So, I'm kinda new here and I've just started experimenting with modding. I tried to make dragons playable in Adventure mode. I made the Entity and the creature itself (I just modified the dragon raw to make a new creature), generated a new world, but I can't play as my wyrms (that's what my modded creature is called). I have the [INDIV_CONTROLLABLE] tag and everything. I don't know what I'm doing wrong...I'll post my raws here and hopefully someone can point out my mistake. Here goes...
