In the early winter of 2023, Rith Craftportent created the position of webmaster as a matter of course.
In the early winter of 2023, DS was appointed to the position of webmaster of the Momentous Dye.

It is done! The construction portion, at least - deployment is a work in progress, pending domain transfer. The version reachable by the link above is a snapshot of how the website looked about a week ago, when github stopped serving up new additions to the repository - frankly, I'm surprised I was able to get as far as I was.

Anyway, I expect it to go live sometime next week.

Congrats for the website!

Looking forward to see the next chapter of the story.

Hey, thanks! You and me both!

Hooray for the new website and for saving the fort with the RAM tool! I'm so glad you didn't lose Roomcarnage after all this time to a RAM issue rather than the fate it deserves--whatever that may be.

No kidding! I didn't say it earlier, but I started hitting that crash in earnest in March, and didn't find the tool until October. I had very nearly thrown in the towel! - and had basically resigned myself to shelving the story until I was able to purchase a superior computer. I actually began work on another story entirely! One day, by chance, I was reading about DF and technical specifications (again, in preparation for that holy grail DF machine), when I happened up on that thread - by chance! I'm still a little bamboozled by the whole episode.

EDIT: My primary suggestion is to look into writing alt text for your images, and learning how to write good alt text.

I intend to! When I began working on the website, I very earnestly attempted to do the former, and quickly learned that I had better first do the latter. I have many questions - writing alt text for DF screenshots poses many unusual challenges! But I'm excited for the work that is set out before me. Thank you for the feedback!

I am once again channeling my inner Rita Repulsa and dramatically emerging from darkness and obscurity (actually a dumpster) with tidings of evil.

First, the excellent news: I am (finally! finally!) managing to cobble together a website - a permanent online home for Roomcarnage. It's far from done - only the first five chapters are available as I write this - but the styling is basically complete, I think, and I have a minimal understanding of html now, and these have been the biggest hurdles in all in this.

For now, it can be found at udibvucar.github.io(obsolete version - see below). If you want to follow along, give feedback, offer (friendly) critique - please do so! I'm very new to this, and I'm sure it shows.

I finished recording chapter 71 a week ago, but I haven't written the captions yet. In the past, I've done that part of the project after I've uploaded the .gifs to imgur, and I arrange and edit as I go. Now, I'll get to do that on my own website, in html. I'll continue to post updates here (and on reddit) when a new chapter is completed.

There was a pretty discouraging snag earlier this year - I nearly despaired - when Roomcarnage hit a recurring crash every time I loaded up the save file, no matter how many times I tried to get around it. In the end, I had to use this tool to make DF 'large address aware,' which to my understanding means that I gave the program another pair of arms to hold the ~1500 undead that now call Roomcarnage home. What a relief.

Finally, massive thanks to voliol, without whose help the story of Roomcarnage might have perished on imgur, and would not have the home it does now.

Wow, thank you! That's very kind of you, and I'm sure this will be very helpful - even if I don't completely understand everything that's going on just yet, heh.

There are, I think, still unmarried and unrelated dwarves of opposite gender, so the chance for children isn't completely gone. But I wouldn't hold out too much hope for it.

As for mirroring Roomcarnage - it's not anywhere else online at the moment, but I do have the narrative and images archived. It is fortunate that they've held up on imgur for as long as they have. I'm currently, slowly, teaching myself HTML and CSS (yes, I do live under a rock), in the hopes that some time this summer I can slap together a simple website that looks like it's as old as Roomcarnage is, for the purposes of hosting it more reliably.

Nice. Always glad to return to this amazing gem of a fort

Happy returnings!

Chapter 70 has been posted. This one's a doozy! Let me know what you think.

Nice. Here's hoping everything goes well with the save transfer :).

It has, thank you! Matter of fact, after moving to my work device, I'm getting two to three more FPS than before - which, when we're talking about single digit rates, is quite pleasant. Here's hoping nothing spooky happens to the rest of my files.

Chapter 69 has been posted.

Tremendous! I had thought this series had faded away for good, as the dwarves caught in the evil mist, but was proven wrong. Thanks for another chapter, it was a great one :)

Thank you! I think there were some times between this chapter and the last that I might have faded away - but I'm being melodramatic. I'm happy to be back at it.

Oh wow, this was a pleasant surprise!

Roomcarnage is one of my favorites. Thanks for this!

You're very welcome! I'm feeling enthusiastic about bringing it to a close soon. I'm eager to play the new version, and to find new stories there to share with the community.

Chapter 68 has been posted.

Whether or not you post again, DS, I just want to thank you for creating this wonderful, really engaging and ambitious emergent story for all of us to read.  It has been such a joy to discover, and to peruse again and again!

I appreciate the kind words! It's been a joy - and a surprise - to see that people still appreciate it after all these years.

Big +1
Man I miss this. I been checking it periodically for years. I hope you have the ability to come back to it someday.

I should also say - thanks for expressing your appreciation at a time when I was absent. It helped motivate me to return to the story.

Ahhhhhh!

Hello everyone - many apologies for the long hiatus. As might be expected, 2020 has not been treating me well. I won't go into the details, but suffice to say the misery and suffering beneath the Ice of Ghosts has scarcely felt like the escape from reality that it once was. I can't guarantee an update on any timeline, but rest assured, dear readers, that this unfinished narrative is like a constantly sizzling ember at the back of my mind - I will complete it, eventually.

I wasn't aware of Wraith of Steam condensation, having never paused to look at the remains twice. I wonder, could one use it to get water in a fortress that has none? I suspect not - they'd need to be stockpilable for that, at the very least - but would need 333 pieces per 1/7, of course.

I don't believe that it is possible in this version (or others) to condense drinkable water out of creature remains. It would be a wonderful and terrible thing if one could, though.

But if you're right about those parts harkening the end for anyone who treads there, the ennui of abandoned hell will only mean falling to the ghosts of the past.

It is a large and dangerous unknown, to be sure.

Well, with your switchback unused you could try to route a cavern's worth of undead into it. Cave-ins seem like the best way to defeat the hordes now, since if I recall correctly magma isn't always effective against them in your version.

It is generally ineffective against any animated dead - they simply continue to burn forever. I'm honestly not sure it's worth it at this point to even attempt retaking any undead-infested portion of the fortress.

Thinking back about hell, isn't there a dead units cap that will cause nothing else to spawn? You're still getting cavern wildlife as noted by the success of your traps, so maybe not, but knowing Roomcarnage your hell is going to be empty.

I really hope this isn't the case, but knowing my luck it probably will be.

Christmas came (two and a bit weeks) early this year, woo!

Perhaps I'll aim a bit earlier, this year?

Wonderful.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I have the stone. In any case, I doubt that the depths have anything to offer beyond what has already been available above - that is, oblivion.

@DS: Once again I renew my offer to help you get set up on a GitHub Pages or S3 hosted site. :)

Has anyone preserved the story of Roomcarnage in a medium other than imgur posts?

...

I'm worried that someday this awesome story will simply be lost to time.

Of course I haven't been keeping track of things surrounding Roomcarnage (re: 2020), but the short answer is - no. To my knowledge, nobody has preserved Roomcarnage outside of Imgur. I regret not being more attentive and eager to seek out help with transferring the story to a more permanent home. Armok knows I need it.

Hey there!

Any updates on either new hosting, or, dare I ask, the story?

None - at the moment, at least. It was good to see you briefly during BlindiRL's stream earlier today!

Any news!? :)

After ten thousand years, I'm free! It's time to conquer Earth finish Roomcarnage!

Just kidding - I've been supremely preoccupied with my day job, newly married life, two new kittens, and a few other creative projects.

I haven't been doing a great job keeping up with recent DF news, but it seems like an exciting time for the Dwarf Fortress community. I've been doing a far worse job keeping up with Roomcarnage story updates. I just finished recording the most recent chapter, and am starting the narration today. Hopefully I'll have it complete within a week or two, but this is already a very busy time of year for me (end of school year), so I would expect to finish this chapter by mid-June, at the very latest. But hopefully sooner.

Yikes - this post hasn't aged well.

No new chapter to speak of, but just a confirmation that 1) I am alive, 2) I have every intention of finishing this accursed story, and 3) I am still looking for alternatives to Imgur for long-term hosting of Roomcarnage and potential future stories. Maybe I should just suck it up and learn some basic web design, eh?
