Any news!? :)

After ten thousand years, I'm free! It's time to conquer Earth finish Roomcarnage!

Just kidding - I've been supremely preoccupied with my day job, newly married life, two new kittens, and a few other creative projects.

I haven't been doing a great job keeping up with recent DF news, but it seems like an exciting time for the Dwarf Fortress community. I've been doing a far worse job keeping up with Roomcarnage story updates. I just finished recording the most recent chapter, and am starting the narration today. Hopefully I'll have it complete within a week or two, but this is already a very busy time of year for me (end of school year), so I would expect to finish this chapter by mid-June, at the very latest. But hopefully sooner.

I'll try and respond to your questions as best I can...

Though, didn't this happen in last episode?

Not sure what you're referring to in this case.

And as for the ghostly Thob...I wonder, would you be able to engrave the memorial after retire-unretire?

This is v0.34.11 - there is no option to peacefully retire.

However, an adamantine pick in military uniform is left in stockpile when Atir goes digging for the world beyond, eager to divorced from her child once more.

Yes, I'm aware, but the point wasn't to have miners wielding adamantine picks at all times - only while in military uniform.

Quote
FYI, you can safely auto-dig in unrevealed areas next to magma/water - the dwarf doesn't go through.

I do not use auto-dig.

Roomcarnage is showing why some designate workfloors as to be easily walled in.

I've addressed this before, but it stands to be repeated - there are specific instances, like this one, where I consciously make suboptimal design or management decisions, for the sake of preserving the fun of things. Keeping things unpredictable is in the best interests of my storytelling.

@Butchering cats:

Mind you, they take 2 years to be full-grown, but are listed as adult at 1 - of course, I'd have figured for the gigantic one to at least yield meat.

Cats are difficult, though - they can adopt dwarves when they want, and the chance of being adopted increases they older they get. It's tricky to get the timing right, and is mostly guesswork on my end.

@Imush Tellcrafts:

A telling tale of the battle to come. The legendary warrior of Roomcarnage could couldn't stand against a single beast of the deeps with no skill - how might the fortress fare against an omni- grandmaster army of them?

Not at all. Speaking from personal experience, numbers are the most important factor when fighting large monsters - especially when well-skilled and equipped, a mob of dwarves is certainly capable of taking down demons in battle.

I figured you would dig towards the ancient, long-gone feature.

I can only now wonder whether -that- will ever be pulled.

I assume here you're referring to the upright adamantine scimitar? And asking why I didn't carve directly towards it?

It's not accessible from above.

When I created Roomcarnage's world, I reduced the number of cavern layers to one - this often (or perhaps always, I'm not sure) has the effect of making demonic fortresses inaccessible.

Thus the only way to the fortress, and the scimitar - if there is any way at all - is through hell.

I'm right on track.

Had to come by and show some love for this one.  Read it on and off over the past few days while procrastinating work!

Thanks!

Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Bitlands

Heyyy, a tileset I actually like!

I'll probably never switch from ASCII at this point, but I have to commend this. Excellent work, looks great!

For something like this, you need version control, as that page isn't on waybackmachine. I suppose there's wiki for that?

That's an interesting thought. I've also begun studying some simple website design options - working from scratch, of course, not blogspot or something like that.

21
Welp, I made a dumb mistake last night while uploading the images for the new chapter, and deleted the last third of chapter 65, as well as the title card. As it turns out, imgur is not the safest option for hosting this tale, just the most convenient.

I still have the .gifs, but the captions have been lost. I could theoretically re-upload the deleted images and write new captions, but for now I have added a new "final" image with a brief explanation. I may decide to allow this small portion of the story to be "lost to time." We shall see.

In the meantime, I am looking at other options for hosting the images. Ultimately the best choice would be to host them on my own website, I think.

A decades-long brawl between smart beings would impart quite the fearsome skills. Any smart beings brawlin'?

Even for non-smart, it still provides combat stat boosts.

I assume foul fog zombies retain some kind of intelligence, I have no idea if husks are able to gain combat stat boosts.

Goden's death....It reminds me of the problems Staalo encountered with his 0-point haunted desert embark. At some point, dwarves ...just stood there. I hope Roomcarnage will not fall to apathy.

The chapter I'm currently recording addresses this directly. Or at least, I hope it will.

Metal crafting...I wouldn't mind the crafts, if they only could create an artifact minecart.

Hmm. I have not utilized minecarts at all in Roomcarnage, it is true. Not much point in doing so, at this time.

For Goden, I can't help but blame the one..two..seven! ghosts floating around the dining hall. More than once I've read tales of sealed forts coming undone by the machinations of spirits. Maybe Sodel could have been saved. But then again, how many lie unmemorialized? Far too many.

Approximately 40 ghosts roam the fortress at any given point in time. These ghosts do not appear on the list of beings who may be memorialized, and their shambling corpses lie out of reach - or at least further than I am willing to stretch.

Quote
For the werezebra, I can't help but wonder - who discovered them? Was it perhaps long-lost Tun? Or mayhaps once of the unfortunate migrants?

Were it not for these, who knows how many zebras would lurk on the map. Let me know if they leave once full moon runs out?

Werecreatures tend to flee the map as soon as they return to their humanoid form. If they become foul fog zombies in the meantime, they presumably spread the contagion to other parts of the world.

Quote
A week should be enough to dump a corpse, but ...Are the dwarves refusing to dump them, now, like they refused to bring Goden to hospital earlier? Being in dining hall, nobody would have touched the corpse.

Nothing so crass, with nearly the entire fortress engaged in military training, even off-duty dwarves have an inconvenient tendency to forgo hauling jobs for individual combat drills.

I know not whence the end comes, or whether the fort will fall to tantrums or deepest dwellers. It is this that adds a bit of tension, even as ghosts wear down The Momentous Dyes dwarf by dwarf. But I fear it not, for I know in your work it will be something to witness. Once again, quite a lengthy update, covering more than three years. Thanks for sharing with us the grim and silent atmosphere of Roomcarnage once more!

Always a pleasure.

Chapter 65 has been posted!

Indeed...

Hey, can I have the map seed so I can try adventure mode?
It would be a great accomplishment if I could make it through to the castle alive, unlike all the migrants and caravans before.

I have every intention of releasing the map - once the story is finished. A drag, I know, but I have my reasons.

Chapter 64 is up!

I'd be happy to help convert the imgur posts into a series hosted either on github or maybe s3. There'd be no good reason it couldn't be and it'd be nice for roomcarnage to have its own place on the web. Sadly imgur appears to be somewhat difficult to scrape. Do you have the original source material?

A generous offer! Please let me know if it still stands, after two and a half months - I really ought to check this thread more often.

I don't know how readable this is, nor how long till DS sees it - 'tis bit of a necro, and I apologize for disrupting it, but the time taken would fit a reply that hopefully encourages them.

I'll attempt to address and clarify some of your more salient points.

Yes, 'tis the curse of Roomcarnage at this point. The moderately-sized population doesn't do me much good, if there are no outward goals left for the dwarves to pursue.

Regarding using ramps instead of stairs, it's an interesting point - to some degree I do value such aesthetics. In Weatherwires, I constructed eight different guildhalls, using a different color of wood to produce chairs, tables, and beds for each. It was a ponderous effort, much like everything else I attempted in Weatherwires - in many ways, that fortress is a relic of my more manic, obsessive youth.

All that is besides the point, of course - the black tile backgrounds don't really bother me. The pursuit of perfection, in design and process, no longer interests me.

Turning off announcements for uninvited guests is a great recommendation. However, looking back, there are a couple visitors who I am glad to have noticed - although, you are right, they don't really have any way of affecting the fortress at this point. Or so you would think.

When it comes to the possibility of werecreatures tracking foul fog to other places - or, indeed, any events that take place outside of the fortress - I am mostly being poetic. In this version of DF, very little occurs outside of the fortress that is actively running.

Without spoiling too much of the next chapter, I can say that the lack of dogs is not a great worry. The fortress now has a large, capable, well-equipped military, and rising undead have been put down without much trouble, except for a few instances where I doubt dogs would have helped.

I suspect you are right, that some ridiculous bug has prevented the merchants from arriving. As I mentioned before, lands and sites outside the fortress go largely untracked and unresolved, meaning the problem with the merchants must have arisen from within. Perhaps the number of merchant deaths reached a threshold, preventing any further arrivals. Perhaps they are trapped in limbo at the edge of the map.

It doesn't make much difference, to be honest. In Weatherwires, I used third party utilities, including dfhack, to manipulate merchants into joining the fortress. It was a decision I later regretted, and I swore that, in all future stories, I would endeavor to write stories about the vanilla DF experience. So, this is the fate of the Momentous Dye.

And... yes. Rith Craftportent. I expected to see her* again at some point, to be honest. You'll find out what happens to her in the next chapter.

So! Obviously it has been some time since the last chapter was published, back in late March. You might think that the intervening four months or so have been spent avoiding the game - or that I recorded the chapter, and it has been languishing on imgur while I put off writing captions.

Both of these possibilities, while certainly having a precedent in earlier chapters, are false.

I have been recording the chapter, averaging several hours a week, for the last four months. Some weeks I wasn't able to play at all. Other weeks, I had Roomcarnage running for 8 hours every day. I just finished recording the chapter a few days ago, and am now in the process of writing captions.

Take from that what you will.

As long as it takes.

...actually, I'm not sure. I'll probably decide when I get there.

28
Alright! Chapter 63 is up, and I've modified the original post to reflect the new chapters and the loss of imgur's horizontal vs. vertical layout.

I have a bit of knowledge about those things and would be willing to advise, but like many I am also extremely busy and wouldn't be able to take a very active role.

Answering technical questions, however, would be a way that I'd like to help.

Thank you for your support! I'll certainly let you know if I have any questions.

29
I did notice that.

Other things imgur has recently dropped - the ability to order an album based on the original filenames. Seems inoccuous, but it adds some additional steps to my process that are really grueling.

I think the time has come to find a more permanent home for The Rise and Fall of Roomcarnage. It's only a matter of time before imgur does something that will really foul up the story - or irrevocably obliterate it.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where to start. Is there anyone with tech/web design experience that would be willing to help me through the process?

30
Would you consider visiting the fortress in adventure mode once the story has ended as an outsider looking in to a known fortress/ruin

I've considered it, and am leaving the option open - I may, in the end, leave visiting the fortress to the community.

As for sieges, that sounds like a fun idea. I had a thought a while back, to start a trapless fortress  defended by a sect of monks that eschew all arms and armor, except for staves... again, we'll see. Right now, I'm just focusing on finishing Roomcarnage.
