DF Gameplay Questions / Re: ToadyOne, what did you put into the water?

I currently have 90 dwarves - fully 1/3 are children! (31 to be specific)  I would love them to do hauling, all they do is sit at the wagon (still digging out the dining room).

My first wave consisted of 4 dwarves and 13 children!

"Magma only melts water above it when it is moving."

Well that's counter intuitive.  I'll have to remember that for my next arctic fort...I just dl the latest newb pack and will be starting over.

Thanks! :D

Playing 34.02: Arctic Embark

So my river was 1 level underground - and 1 level below that was the volcano.

I dug out about 50 squares under the river and filled the space with lava.  The river thawed. From the top, outside layer I dug channels.  This allowed fishing for few a seasons.  The the river froze over and and lava(7 deep) stopped unfreezing it.  I had a 50 square flowing river, and never more than 10 channels ever dug out.

gghggghggggg
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

g=ground h=channel r=river l=lava

Why would my entire river freeze?  I could understand the channels freezing, but not the whole thing.

Then I tried enclosing the entire ground area above the lava and river with walls and floors, but this didn't work either...

So even though I had a few years of fishing, I guess that was a fluke, and you really can't fish in Arctic enviroments?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Butchers Missing for a week

Playing 34.02 I've had guys go disappearing, and unless their bodies are found, they remain missing forever.

Your butcher could have fallen off a cliff, into a river or been ambushed and unless someone finds the body he remains missing and you cannot engrave a memorial or bury him. I had two guys missing for years...

The Mayday graphics set contains a stone control mod which allows you to use or block any stone.  If you want to build everything out of, say felsite you can do just that by marking every other stone as not used.

So dead bodies...Why are they on the empty cage stockpile?

Oh well, thanks! ;D

Looking at the Mayday site, I must have version 15, not 16 because I do not have the full stone mod his latest version contains.

So having lost my last fort due to idiot dwarf marks men leaving the fort to charge into glorious death with a siege...I started yet another fort.

I use vanilla 40d no editing, with the latest Mayday set.

So the Dwarven caravan came and I bought 8 empty cages. The cages were then moved to my empty stockpile, but show as having occupants. (3 Cs, a D and 4 Hs).  I tried building the cages to release the occupants, but the cage shows up empty.  After removing the cage, it again is placed in the empty stockpile, but when I try to use the cage in a trap, it gives me the no empty cage message.  I'm stuck with 8 full yet empty cages.  Any ideas?

The other weird thing with this fort, during the winter I dug out some ice, just to see if I could get ice blocks.  Instead I got water blocks.  I built a short wall with them and the are rough water block walls.  A couple of years later and they are still standing.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: How to kill caged goblins.

I just drown them.  If you have a river, and a couple of floodgates, dead goblins are easy.

Just remember to attach a lever to open the cages, to let them out, otherwise they somehow survive being underwater...

Is there a packaged release, like the mayday set?

So my current fort is 8 years old, I have all the industries up and running, and the last 3 sieges have been easily handled.  I'm thinking of starting a new fort, but first:

1. When the elven diplomat gives a warning about how many trees you can cut, what happens if I tell him to beat it?  He gave me a limit of 109 or something trees to cut, and since my stock piles were full I agreed.

2. How can I limit my population?  My current setting in the init folder is 160, yet I have 183 dwarves in my fort.  I want to keep it close to 100, I'm starting to get slow downs and stutters with 183..  I don't kill off the nobles, so I want to be able to get all of them.

3. The King.  The incoming King wants offerings.  The wiki says thats part of trading...How?  Do I just mark things for trade, and not mark anything of his?

4. I've read about encrusting walls - How do I do that?  Is that still an option?  I had my jewelers encrusting furniture, goods and ammo but you can't really control what they are encrusting, right?

Thanks

You traps can injure your guys if they fall unconscious on them.  I've lost a couple of dogs recently.

Search for livestock, there are some pics of barns....here is one: (not mine, but I use it now!)

Its the best way I've found.  Chain a breeding pair, and cage all the offspring.  When they grow up, butcher or train them.

I came up with a drowning pool.  Works fine.  And I get all their stuff.  ;D  And no danger to my guys!

I have a new question; I haven't killed off the nobles...I don't know why, but I've got them all set up, all demands met, all but 1 mandate (I can't make crystal glass  :'() but now my new mayor is asking for an item in his office.  I cannot figure out what item?!?!?  Do I keep throwing things in there? or am I missing where to find out what he wants?  And will the others start doing this?
