DF Gameplay Questions / Fishing in Frozen Enviroment
« on: March 13, 2012, 03:21:49 pm »
Playing 34.02: Arctic Embark

So my river was 1 level underground - and 1 level below that was the volcano.

I dug out about 50 squares under the river and filled the space with lava.  The river thawed. From the top, outside layer I dug channels.  This allowed fishing for few a seasons.  The the river froze over and and lava(7 deep) stopped unfreezing it.  I had a 50 square flowing river, and never more than 10 channels ever dug out.

gghggghggggg
rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
llllllllllllllllllllllllllllllll

g=ground h=channel r=river l=lava

Why would my entire river freeze?  I could understand the channels freezing, but not the whole thing.

Then I tried enclosing the entire ground area above the lava and river with walls and floors, but this didn't work either...

So even though I had a few years of fishing, I guess that was a fluke, and you really can't fish in Arctic enviroments?

So having lost my last fort due to idiot dwarf marks men leaving the fort to charge into glorious death with a siege...I started yet another fort.

I use vanilla 40d no editing, with the latest Mayday set.

So the Dwarven caravan came and I bought 8 empty cages. The cages were then moved to my empty stockpile, but show as having occupants. (3 Cs, a D and 4 Hs).  I tried building the cages to release the occupants, but the cage shows up empty.  After removing the cage, it again is placed in the empty stockpile, but when I try to use the cage in a trap, it gives me the no empty cage message.  I'm stuck with 8 full yet empty cages.  Any ideas?

The other weird thing with this fort, during the winter I dug out some ice, just to see if I could get ice blocks.  Instead I got water blocks.  I built a short wall with them and the are rough water block walls.  A couple of years later and they are still standing.

DF Gameplay Questions / Late Game questions

So my current fort is 8 years old, I have all the industries up and running, and the last 3 sieges have been easily handled.  I'm thinking of starting a new fort, but first:

1. When the elven diplomat gives a warning about how many trees you can cut, what happens if I tell him to beat it?  He gave me a limit of 109 or something trees to cut, and since my stock piles were full I agreed.

2. How can I limit my population?  My current setting in the init folder is 160, yet I have 183 dwarves in my fort.  I want to keep it close to 100, I'm starting to get slow downs and stutters with 183..  I don't kill off the nobles, so I want to be able to get all of them.

3. The King.  The incoming King wants offerings.  The wiki says thats part of trading...How?  Do I just mark things for trade, and not mark anything of his?

4. I've read about encrusting walls - How do I do that?  Is that still an option?  I had my jewelers encrusting furniture, goods and ammo but you can't really control what they are encrusting, right?

Thanks

DF Gameplay Questions / Seige Questions
« on: February 21, 2009, 11:30:48 am »
So I have survived the second siege, having lost only a couple of Axedwarves, but I have a couple of questions:

1> My caravan from the dwarven homes arrived at the same time as the siege.  All but one trader made it into my fortress, the straggler was quickly ambushed and killed.  The caravan which was unloading, packed up and wouldn't trade. Then as soon as the siege ended, they left.  So the one trader getting killed stopped all trading?

The liaison didn't have a problem, he stayed and talked to me, leaving well after his buddies, and after most of the siege had been cleaned up.

2> Also during the siege, I somehow cage trapped the muskox of the dead trader.  I tamed it with the dungeon master, but when I tried to move from the cage to a chain, it went and attacked my dwarves.  Thankfully my hunter was walking by after dropping off his latest kill and took care of it.  So if it was tame why did it attack?

3> I cannot figure out how to take the equipment off captured goblins.  If I go to the stocks menu, how do I know what they are wearing?  (I am using the Mayday graphics set and it shows the weapons in white, red and blue, I think the blue is what they have, but I'm not sure...)

I now have 19 caged up, and am going to have to get rid of them..too bad the dungeon master can't tame them.

DF Gameplay Questions / Trade Depot
« on: February 02, 2009, 04:28:13 pm »
So in my current Fort, I built 2 trade Depots.  The first one was set to be removed to make way for a wall, but the dwarven caravan arrived and unloaded before the depot was removed.  My mason came by, and removed the Depot.  All the trade goods are now sitting on the ground, and the caravan has moved to the other depot.  Now the wiki (I just looked) says:

As a side note, if you remove your trade depot, all the caravan's items will drop to the ground, to be readily hauled away by your dwarves. This does not mark the item as stolen, and the caravan will leave.

It's my second year, and this was the first caravan. (I might have missed the first, but I don't remember seeing it.)  The wiki also says that immigration is controlled by the returning caravan.  Will I even get migrants?  I never knew this could happen.  Have I screwed up relations with the mountain home?  :-\

DF Gameplay Questions / Stockpiles & Bridges
« on: January 25, 2009, 09:12:46 am »
Having abandoned my last fort to starvation, despite have 300 turtles (they were Raw and I missed that!)  I have started a new fort.  I have a couple of problems.

1. I build large stock piles for each food - Meat, Plant, Drinks etc.  I also built a barrel stockpile.  Now my idiot dwarves are walking through and past the food stockpiles to store the food in the barrel stockpile. WTF >:(  The stock piles are not full, and can easily accept more barrels.  If I turn off the additional options on the barrel stock, it won't allow the barrels to be placed there and they keep stocking the food there.... I am stuck.  This is driving me nuts.  Can I have a stockpile for just barrels?  This didn't happen in my other forts, I don't know what the hell is going on.

2. I built a 3x3 drawbridge to allow traders to get to my depot.  I decided to try the atom smashing I've read about in the wiki.  I built a garbage stock under where the bridge would fall, pulled the level and the bridge fell.  The garbage (rocks) somehow ended up on top of the bridge and was flung all over when I tried lifting the bridge. (It also took three lever pulls to get the bridge to go up) What happened?  The wiki says anywhere under the bridge, and doesn't mention a specific size.  I don't really need the smasher, I just wanted to try it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Siege !?!?
« on: January 09, 2009, 03:17:20 pm »
So I've survived a couple of Ambushes which cost me 2 dwarves, a hunter and a mason (I still don't know what he was doing outside..).

I had a caravan of elves arrive when my screen went black and "a vile force of darkness has arrived!"
My dwarves were scattered all over the map collecting wood, and clothing from the ambushers, thieves and snatchers. (I didn't have a stockpile for their clothing :o)  I figured I was about to get slaughtered.

I issued the order, all dwarves inside.  This revealed my first mistake, as the level for my bridge was outside! :o  I had to release the dwarves back outside, and cancel all the pending trade items which were outside, to get one of them to pull the lever.  This took about 5 minutes real time.  While this was going on, the two groups of attackers I saw (maybe 10 guys) were chasing a pet horse all over the map.

The order to raise the bridge (or retract it, How do you tell which you have?) was fulfilled just before the horse lost his battle with the invaders.

My fort is surrounded by a 2 tile wall, and a 2 tile moat outside of that.  I've built a long and winding single tile wide tunnel, lined with traps as a side entrance. I've built fortifications atop the walls near the bridge and over by the trap tunnel entrance.   I have 2 squads of 6 marksdwarves each, most of them elite.

The invaders having killed the valiant horse, and a puppy who was also somehow outside, then they  entered the tunnel.  After triggering 2 stonefall traps they then left.......The siege notice on top of the screen cleared and that was that.  I didn't even get my squads outside before they left!  I then saved.

So here are my questions:
1. Is that it?  Once the siege clears from the top of the screen is it over?  Or are they still lurking on the map, waiting for my guys to go outside?

2. Is there a way to designate everything inside my wall as "inside"?  So when I order all dwarves inside, all I really want is them to do is get behind the wall.

3. If I'm still under siege, how will the elves leave?  Being elves the are only 1 tile wide, will they be able to pass the traps and leave that way, or do I have to lower the bridge?

(FYI I use the mike mayday tileset)

DF Gameplay Questions / Clerk and Inventory
« on: January 03, 2009, 02:45:23 pm »
So my expedition leader became the mayor.  Then after the last bunch of immigrants, then he was quickly voted out of office.  The new mayor was given his office, and since he is just a lowly clerk now, I built him a new office. It's an office (no other description)

Since then my inventory is screwed up royally.  He said I had like 500 iron bolts (I have none!) then he said I had 200 drinks, and about 2 minutes later I had 30.  Seems like every time I look at the stock menu there is something screwy.  As I look right now supposedly I have 145 steel bolts (No way) and despite a full 2x10 stock pile of thread, he says I have none....

I have the clerk set to the highest accuracy, and his only other jobs are health care, cleaning and refuse hauling.  He is also the manager and broker.  His requirements are met.  He only needs a meager office, and he has an office, dining room, chests etc.

Bug? unhappy about losing mayor?  or is this because I had him without an office for a short time?

The other weird thing which happened with the latest arrivals was my wood stock pile.  It got filled up.  I had about half of my stockpile full, and like magic it filled up. (maybe 30 or 40 logs...) Weird, but I'll take it!

Any ideas what happened?  It wasn't that there were a lot of cut logs lying around.  Up until their arrival I had 1 guy cutting and the haulers we keeping up with him easily. (I didn't have a damn anvil yet! So I only had 1 Axe.  The dwarven caravan just came and I got 2 anvils, Yea!)  ;D
