Browsing an article and in the middle of it is some screwed up, godawful picture of a scaly looking baby with cracked, hard skin that looked like it was bleeding. Total going to help with the insomnia.
Harlequin Ichthyosis?
What kind of article was it? :/

General Discussion / Re: Wargaming & Miniatures
« on: January 24, 2016, 05:48:56 pm »
Okay, so
I don't do the wargaming and miniatures, but I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on 3D-printing figures for this purpose?
I understand it's an expensive hobby, but I have almost unlimited access to a Makerbot 5th gen which could theoretically shave a lot off the price of entry if I could spend enough time on it.

Anyone have any opinions or experience on the matter?

Hey, you know something else that causes cancer in rats?

Being a rat.

Especially a female rat. They grow tumors like crazy. Mostly benign, but still. Two of my eight fuzzgals needed golfball-sized bits of bonus self removed.

I guess being so prone to it is part of what makes them good candidates to test for it, but it's still funny to me.

This sounds almost exactly like what happened to me in my very first fort of the new version.
I ended up posting about it on the bug tracker: Bug 0009344

Based on that, I'm going to throw out a guess that what probably happened to you was that a random husked bird (or birds) flew onto your map covered in heinous murk, and it attacked either a dwarf or animal on the surface, transferring the murk covering to them and converting them into a husk. Then that victim attacked something else and spread it around, which in turn attacked something else, eventually culminating in the full zombie outbreak experience.

I never worked out whether the wildlife arrived on the map already infected or if it was somehow converted after arriving, but it was only ever birds, so it might be related to the bug where you can have embark locations that are good or neutral on the ground but evil a few z-levels up.

Of course I could be wrong and you could be dealing with an entirely different bug, but the end result sounds very similar to what I ended up dealing with.

I was really bitter about having to give up on that embark location, so I tried starting a second one in the same region, but that gave exactly the same results, so it affected the entire region. So yeah, making a new world is probably your best bet if you want to be sure to avoid it cropping up again…

hard to talk about something that i don't have huehueheuheu

ANYWAYS

I am actually starting to sorely miss being on IRC (and i'm BORED OUT OF MY GODDAMN MIND), but my hands are still too much at risk to start chatting like a maniac (even a gentle and careful maniac). Rambling on the forum just isn't the same, because people can't butt in during the ramble and lead me on to tangents. I also miss some of the cool people in there (to a limited degree, since there's literally only one person on all the channels i go to that i know in person), and these channels are among the very few places where i can interact with people in real-time without being anxious. :<

Tried voice-to-text options? I think most of the Windows past XP have a not-totally-terrible one built in. I've been using an older version of Dragon NaturallySpeaking I got for $30 off Amazon to chat with for the past year or so. It came with a half-decent headset and everything. Been in a similar (but really severe in my case) situation in regards to hands RSI for the past year-and-a-bit, so I've had to get to know my options. Works better than you'd think.

Demodex are kind of cute though, don't you think? With those stubby lil' legs. They don't cause you any harm, they're just happy little facebros keeping you company when you're feeling alone. They live on you, so you're literally the world to them! Doesn't that make you feel important?  :)

Not to get too off-topic, but is there anything like that (easy character creator thing) out there that spits out the actual 3D model file when it's done? STL or whatnot? Obviously Hero Forge isn't doing it because they want you to pay them $15 per fig rather than mass-producing your own. But say you happened to have this 3D printer sitting around...

Just wanted to say I kinda love this idea, haha.

Sadly I have a hand injury preventing me from playing most games that's not going away any time soon, so any pledges I made would be full of deceitful lies.

Looking forward to reading plenty of colourful reviews though. :D

Didn't leather-bound books exist in an older version? If so I might put this up on the bug-tracker. (If not it might get shot down as a suggestion rather than a bug...)

Quick question since I can't check the game right now and the wiki doesn't mention it...

Is it really not possible to bind books with leather? That's the first material I'd think of when imagining book bindings.

Oh. Oh. Conspiracy? You poor, innocent babe.

It's way more batshit than that.
Yeah, I saw that stuff too. I just thought I'd give the majority of people the benefit of the doubt and not bring the alternate universe theories into it... :P

I know it's nothing new, but I only just stumbled on the existence of the Berenstein/Berenstain Bears spelling controversy.
It kinda tickles me that there are so many people who would sooner look for some kind of conspiracy than just accept that their childhood memory is mistaken.

Mine's from a Japan-only GBA monster-raising game called Dino Device. Specifically, it's Kaffaljidhma, the fire-element Cetus type. All the monster types are named after constellations, and the subtypes are named after stars within those constellations.

I chose this one because it was the one generated from my own name and birthday in the game. And also because there's nothing that isn't perfect about a bright red shark wielding a chainsaw.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Evil rain in non-evil area

Could that happen even with unnamed, non-historical-figure wildlife though? Because these all seem to be regular, nameless, everyday birds that just happened to catch the eerie murk bug. None of them showed up in legends except for the converted-on-site horse thrall that murdered everyone in my first fortress and gained a title in the process, and the raven thralls appearing obviously preceded that.

For an update on mine...
New fortress, same world, same general region. This one is on a Temperate Savanna "Wilderness" biome. Still no evil nearby.
Already had one "Great Horned Owl eerie murk thrall" show up. Unlike the ravens in the previous fort, this one had no trace of eerie murk covering on its body. My doctor wrestled it to death with his bare hands with no ill effects, outside of minor injuries all over his body and some bruised guts.

No longer convinced this is related to evil weather happening on this map, but I still can't explain it. Keeps getting weirder. :/

Really hoping the next out-of-place thrall follows suit and leaves its eerie murk at home, though. I can deal with the abnormally dangerous wildlife, but not with the highly contagious zombie pandemic.

Edit: In retrospect, it's been raining on-and-off on this map. Is it possible the owl had its eerie murk cleaned off by the rain?
