...Or just jump off the plank, like she says.
wot?
What, you actually killed her? You monster. :P

Edit: On topic
Beat the boss of Blighttown in a single try while human, then proceeded to fall off the elevator while trying to leave and die. Three times. In the same spot.

Dark Souls. Apparently I'm gud enough to defeat bosses but not gud enough to walk successfully in a straight line without killing myself.

The nails on my big toes seem to be literally turning into claws.
About halfway up the nail I've noticed a ridge, where it suddenly gets thicker. I think it might be too late to cut them, now.
Unless I used some sort of powertools.
Yoink confirmed for Demonspawn. Somehow, you levelled up. Have you been killing rats?

B-but... but... rats are adorable! D:
If I killed any of them it was most certainly by accident. The demonspawn part I'm okay with, at least.

I think that a lot of the charm of games like this comes from idiosynchratic flavor stuff. Most of it's completely harmless, so killing off things like racial armour and cheese because they aren't necessary makes me pretty sad. Next they'll kill off item identification so you'll no longer be able to find distressingly furry ring mail. :(

I'm sure they can trim off enough to get it to some kind of idealized perfect roguelike experience where there's only a few core mechanics left that are all extremely important and meaningful, but they'll have lost a lot of soul along the way.

I have to suggest the Etrian Odyssey series for DS/3DS. It's pretty oldschool, with good character/party customization and a pretty harsh difficulty curve for a turn-based RPG. I've only played the first one, but it involves diving into a (huge, non-random, grid-based) dungeon and mapping it out by hand on the lower screen, trying to push further with each dive before running out of resources and having to return to town. Expect to get TPKO'd by harmless-looking butterflies and bunnies early on. The story is present but minimalistic, and there's no preset characters in your party (the 3DS remake changes this). They also have item/monster encyclopedias to fill in and tend to have ridiculously brutal postgames.

Some people hate the mapping mechanic but I found it strangely satisfying, since you get that feeling of accomplishment for each new room you successfully explore and mark down.

Edit: I also second (third?) the Exile series from Spiderweb. It's old but really quite good.

The smell of wine makes me think of vomit. Probably because that's the form I've most encountered it in in the past.

Screw alcohol and people poisoning themselves for fun.

Defeated the Moonlight Butterfly on the second try, climbed the tower beyond it and claimed the loot.

After pausing to ponder where to go next while still human, strolled absently off the top of the tower and fell to my death.

On the way to pick up my 15k souls I derped and got eaten by a tree.

I can't believe we're arguing about Squirtle.
No, it was rounder and furrier. It was really, really cute and I'm quite sad I can't identify it.  :-[

Marill? :P
I think Noibat's the cutest but I'm biased.

Sort of a minor sad compared to most, but...

I went to the local pet store the other day because I'm looking for employment and wanted to check to see how well cared for their animals were. Surprisingly, they all seemed happy and healthy.

The sad was that they had a pair of beautiful friendly male rats on display and they let me put my hands in the cage. They grabbed my fingertips with both hands and nibbled gently on my fingernails. Cue me suddenly feeling like crying because my own pet rats died several years ago and apparently I actually miss them really hard.

I won't be able to get any animals until I move out, and it sucks...  :(

...Those are all completely black, featureless squares on my monitor. :P (except the one with the moon). It's an old CRT though, so I'm going to be an outlier.

I guess you need to be careful when incorporating light and darkness into gameplay design. People need to be able to calibrate it to the desired level on their hardware, but there's also going to be those who will happily max their brightness so that the "disadvantage" of darkness disappears.

You'll either want to put them back in the nest and hope their mom comes back overnight or else get them to a wildlife rehabber. They'll die if they aren't fed, and they'll die if you feed them improperly (too much/too little/too fast/wrong stuff). Those guys look really young.

I once had someone drive up while I was out walking and hand me a baby rabbit that they'd rescued from a parking lot where a pair of cats had been terrorizing it. Ended up taking it down the street and putting it outside in a box with a hole cut in the side so it could flee once it felt up to it. It was a lot older than these ones, but I still wonder if it survived alright. :(

Feral/outdoor cats are a massive problem for wildlife.

(Wrote this earlier but only decided to post it now)

Going back tangentally to a previous topic, I was thinking earlier about the idea people brought up that characters are assumed to be heterosexual until evidence is given to the contrary, and had an interesting realization about myself.

I'm... I guess you would say asexual. Don't often think about it and prefer not to because the whole thing squicks me out. It occurred to me that I tend to assume every character in everything is also asexual (as in, completely disinterested in sex with anybody, period) until proven otherwise. Considering romantic/sexual stuff can be independant from eachother and referring to sex is a no-no in a lot of media, this actually goes unchallenged a lot of the time.

I know logically that this is a bizarre assumption to make, but it certainly makes characters a lot more relatable for me until it's challenged. Also sometimes extremely jarring when it is challenged (Altair in AC2 comes to mind).

Suppose this doesn't really add much to the discussion besides a different perspective. Just thought it was interesting, a minority viewpoint that can be successfully subjectively projected onto the majority due to social conventions.

What do you get from playing online?
Dark Souls (and Demon's Souls, though it's not for PC) are completely unique in how the multiplayer experience is seamlessly interwoven with the single player game. Other players helping and hindering you, directly and indirectly, is a concept the entire game is designed around.

Certain entire aspects of the game won't "work" as intended if you're offline. BlackFlyme mentioned "covenants", which are factions you can join that mostly let you interact with other people's games in different unique ways, be it PVP (consentual or not) or co-op. Certain actions in the game are "punished" by being attacked by player members of a certain covenant, for example. The covenants and what they do are all tied directly into the game's lore and backstory. The game's still entirely beatable offline, but you miss out on a lot of things that were intended to be a part of the core experience.

A specific example from Demon's Souls (Dark Souls' predecessor) was that there was a major boss in the game that was actually another player summoned from their game to fight you. If they succeeded in killing you, they'd get a unique item for it, but you had to defeat an actual human being to progress through the game. Playing offline would get you a (usually much easier) NPC boss in their place.

Dark Souls Prepare To Die edition is currently on sale for the weekend at $7 on Steam. That's 66% off the full price of $20. It's not Dark Souls 2 but if you haven't played 1 there's your chance to pick it up.
Is one any good on the PC now?  I heard it had some pretty severe problems at release.

A controller is close to mandatory, and DSFix (mod) is usually recommended. I played it with a PS3 controller and it was a fantastic experience. I had zero issues with performance, but YMMV obviously.

Just remember to play it online or you're missing half the experience.

It also uses GFWL, which will be dying in a couple months, and they've been rather vague thus far on whether it'll be switching to something else or just losing online entirely. So if you're going to play it (and you should), play it now!

I can't seem to un-wield things. Pressing "w" -> "-" just gives me the message "Never mind."

What am I doing wrong?
I had this problem too, since pressing "-" was how you'd unwield a few versions ago. Now you have to hit the key for the item currently in your hands instead.

We can always split the difference - put all of the "adult" themed items in a mod that's installed by default. Gimp suit, lost submissive and prostitute professions, "personal massager", etc. Make it enabled by default and you have the... well... best of both worlds.
This would be awesome.
