DF Suggestions / Re: Additional Mechanics/Traps Wishlist

The main disadvantages one would have with air compression include poor-quality air-sealing (e.g. an air-canister with fractures could explode with nasty results), and an excessive amount of power needed to fully pump a canister to full capacity. There are niches where it would work well, such as the airguns aforementioned (the 18th century was when airguns reached their peak with the Girandoni rifle, yet airguns would exist for much earlier before that), or for torpedo design (although the degree of air compression needed for a reliable torpedo would probably be too high for DF; the Whitehead torpedo had an air pressure of about 2.65 megapascals)

Mystery Meat Surprise:
Warning: May contain elf Corpse.

Hmm...perhaps the quality of the beer should also be based on its relative temperature. Using a caged ice elemental to power a minifridge sound like anyone's fancy?

Air compression did exist in primitive forms throughout the olden days. The bellows were the classic example of an air compressor, and were the main means for refilling airgun canister (as during the times of blackpowder, air-based weaponry was considered as a serious weapon despite prohibitive cost, due to the ability to have multiple bullets/clip, and no muzzle flash/smoke discharge). Larger bellows were mounted on wagons in the 18th century to quicken compression, yet such bellows could easily be used in a 1400s techbase.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: The proper spike-and-plate arrangement.
« on: October 22, 2008, 12:02:41 pm »
The easiest way is to build a 1x1 room with a pressure plate linked to every spike, set to trigger when water goes off, and a lever connected either to a hatch or screw pump (as a means to get water to the system. Me, I use two hatches, one above the other, so that when I pull the switch, only a limited amount of water reaches the pressure plate, allowing it to reset afterwards.

As of now, since bad guys cannot climb, a single pit and retracting bridge can do more for base defense than the largest of armies. Make it the only way in and you're set.

DF General Discussion / Re: Educational Value of Dwarf Fortress?
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:58:49 am »
When I first played Dwarf Fortress, I used to build my housing areas haphazardly, and with subsequent games, I started planning. I started setting up long-term constructions/housing complexes.

The game has also taught me the true value of water. Be it for irrigation, for power, or for computing, water is truly one of the most useful items about and for more than just drinking. The game is also creating interest in the nature of animal husbandry, be it breeding animals for war, food, or as another powersource.

Toady already has plans to heavily revise the cooking system, in ways including requiring water for distilling, to not allowing one to cook booze. He also is working on the creation of a substrate+adder system.

DF General Discussion / Educational Value of Dwarf Fortress?
« on: October 21, 2008, 11:53:42 pm »
Dwarf Fortress truly is unlike any other game of it's kind; the ability to work from the smallest details and work one's way up allows it to be used in all sorts of creative ways.

I've found games by themselves generally aren't more than cursory in their ability to educate, yet are capable of sparking interest in subjects that prompt an inquisitive gamer to read up on the subjects in detail. For example, Age of Empires 2 gave very cursory descriptions of the nature of medieval society, and the assorted groups that lived and died throughout it, yet the presentation of the material came in such a manner that one would legitimately be interested in these subjects and want to read more on the nature of how the Byzantine Empire's decline continued to accelerate between the fall of Manzikert, and the Siege of Constantinople.

My question is, given enough time, does one view Dwarf Fortress as having potential as an educational tool for assorted subjects? E.g. could one see it being a study guide for learning one's different forms of rocks, or simply as a primer for sparking interest in the differences between sedimentary vs. metamorphic rocks. As a tool for teaching lateral thinking and creative ways to use smaller parts to build a greater whole (e.g. computer construction). Or as a moral lesson on not angering the carp?

Or am I looking into this too deeply.

There is actually a game called Battleraper? I love this planet.

There is actually a game called Battle Raper. And a sequel called Battle Raper 2: The Game. How great our planet is.

I make it a point to capture nobles and throw food to them through a pit.

You know, the only thing I want more than this is a copy of Halo with all the enemies guns taken away.  Srsly, who would give them guns?

This is a false analogy; comparing guns in halo to mandates in DF is fallacious. Additionally, we're suggesting ways to improve the current mandate system as an alternate to outright removal, as the mandates tend to be outright arbitrary; if they can be tied into events/overarcing lists of demands (e.g. a military Noble going "I shall require a fine purebred warhorse, a steel-tipped lance, and a fine suit of platemail!") then it would be less arbitrary then asking for a glass barrel on a sandless map.

I go to North Carolina State university; we're within close proximity to Epic Games (they're headquarted in Raleigh, and their president Mike Capps gave a seminar on building the perfect gamemaking team), and Red Storm Entertainment. Another thing to find out under which college Computer Science falls under. In some schools, Computer Science is treated as part of the math and science program, while at others (such as State), it's considered part of the College of Engineering.

If you are looking for job opportunities/social networking, look to join your local ACM or IEEE chapter. Look out for career fairs. Learn to write a good resume. Don't write bullshit. Look like a hard-worker. Avoid parties. Do not fold, spindle or mutilate. Beware of campus preachers.

I have lots and lots of sandstone. They go into mechanisms until I can replace them with bauxite mechanisms. I use an incineration chamber (a retracting bridge over a magma pool) for garbage disposal.

Your math score is good but I would retake the other 2 sections. Have you been loading up on AP courses? If so, that will really help you out.

A standard computer science degree is good, depending on the school it will probably have you take assorted non-CSC courses such as humanities/general tech electives because if you're not a well-rounded student, you're a communist! Summer school is good for the summers of your freshman and sophmore years to knock those types of courses out of the way.

DF General Discussion / Re: The NEW Future of the Fortress
« on: October 21, 2008, 12:23:47 am »
Here's a question:

Because of the sheer amount of redesigning and content, will there be new additions to the Dwarf Fortress vocabulary to cope with it? Take for example say... potential RNG martial arts styles or creative art pieces. Certainly the current vocabulary isn't large enough without being overly repetitive if more and more things need to make more use of it.
