Every time I see another post asking about this, I think of THe Cat WIth Hands short.

I should really mod in a creepy climbing cavern cat creature. with hands.

17 - Do you ever use pewter of any kind for anything?
I noticed I can make stuff with this material, but I'm not sure it's worth the effort?

If you want the number on metal values, the wiki actually comes through on this one:
http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Metal

It lists what can be made, and a multiplyer to tell you how much it'll be worth. (not to mention the damage / block you'll get in a weapon. Just remember that some things take 3 bars (like an anvil) and some things produce 3-to-a-bar (like flasks).

is it true you can milk cows if they are smaller?
would modding a dwarved cow be fair?
The wiki said that maggots are invisible until caught, only can be milked once a season, and some dwarves find them delicious.

that sounds hard to get around.

you'd have to make te cows vermin, I think.

Tested d9 on Vista x64 and  did not have success
...
0.3 does work with d5 though.

Dang. Can you tell it to "Run! Run like you're in XP!" and get functionality?

Only if you're willing to dabble in modding.
THere's a way to train every skill in the game using weapons. Including Alchemy, Druidry , and TRACKING (whatever the heck that is)... which you can't gain any other way.

..then you just build an arena (since I don't think they'll spar with those weapons)

Instead of causing your dwarfs to spontaneously cumbust imp leather armor ought to make them resistant to fire damage...

...the bones do. I thought the leather did too. I'ts just the meat and fat and gobbets that don't, I think.

build the fortifications one row hanging off of the wall, since they can see and shoot down through them.

so you're saying that if the fortifications are built a row outside the (and above) the wall, then dwarves can look down "underneath" them to see the bottom of the wall? I've been using moats to keep things far enough away to keep in line of sight. I've been a fool.

THank you Peewee. I understand how annoying these things have been for others to install, don't worry, you'll be left in peace.
I have but one question, so I know whether it's worth it to start the hoop-jumping
 - is there hope that they'll (eventually) run on Vista.

Yes, Vista:
Vista the vile, Vista the unloved;
Mad Vista, of 64 bit insanity, with two different Programs folders;
Dread Vista, who guards its "included .NET" jealously;
Damned Vista, who must take up the guise of another OS just to speak the name Office 2003;

Vista.  :-[

ELf and goblin... soap? I'm assuming you made them butcherable some how?

As for sacrifices - I can forsee gods not just allowing sacrifices, but demanding them.
Like nobles do.
Armok Has started a Mandate - "Elf Tallow"
Frikkin' Gods.
And you can't *drown* a god. (or any of the other "Noble Disposal" options)

Hm, weird, I ran some tests and FIXED_TEMP does something.  It definitely applies to the stone, because that will boil or ignite or melt if any of those values are below it's own FIXED_TEMP.  It will also destroy any buildings made with materials with those values lower than it's temp while it's in them (the smelter) which, strangely, automatically destroys the stone as well, no matter how high it's own immunity is.  It does not, however, do anything to creatures or other objects.  I'll have to test further.

reeeally. does it only destroy? or can you use it to light, say, Coal, on fire? a floor made of coal? 'cuz - Murderholes!

Would floor bars hooked to a lever make a murder hole?
or do I have to drop kittens through there?

THeoretically this could work, but the problem is that useful ammo to drop down it is lacking. If you don't want to use magma, that is.

Yeah, then I should turn all normal creatures to BLOODTYPE:G and the opposite...

You mean you can't change just the color of bloodtype:g?
*checks* well. Apparently you can't. THere's a RAW to be missing. :(

DF Modding / Re: The many wonders of Longland Grass
« on: January 14, 2009, 11:18:27 am »
If this is actually grass then, you would probably want a lower ignite point, preferably something that won't combust in high heat deserts, but if there is a fire then it should combust.

If you know the biome temperature ranges, then post 'em and I'll be all over that... although personally I think that thatch smolders and is more resistant than one might think.
 I set it to heat up quickly with the spec-heat, so if I understand rightly then any long-range fires should light it up well. (I'm not exactly clear on this. the Wiki is obscure)
