The wheel of time has turned again. For the eight time, the pretenders of bay12 stir from their slumber to claim their rightful place as the one and only god.

This one is the time of magic and myths, the Early Age as the future historians will call it.

Me and my HP Evo N410c have a long history together. I met her online while living abroad, over half a decade ago. She was with somebody else for quite a while before we hooked up, but even back then I liked her reliability and old-school approach to computing. I must admit I had an affair with a PC somewhere along the way, but in the end we're still together, taking joy in each other's minimalism.

Recently, however, she's been acting up. I know not whether it's one of her temporary mood swings, an undiagnosed virus or - sad as it might be - maybe it's just that her time on this earthly world is coming to an end.

What's happening is this:
She's a 1 GHz Pentium 3, and after booting and checking the properties of "My Computer" I'm reading something close to her nominal speed. After a short while, though, it invariably goes down to 727 Mhz. That's over 25% decrease in the processing power, which is very visible in her case. The old arcade emulators we used to play together are barely able to churn out 2-3 frames per second now. Low-profile games like DEFCON are lagging so badly that it's a chore to even select "exit game" from the main menu. Even Uplink is losing frames and consuming 100% CPU power despite supposedly requiring only 500MHz processor to run.
(The slowitudeTM generally takes form of very(sometimes VERY, like 1 per 5-10 secs) low framerate in games that used to run more or less smoothly.)

The other thing I can't figure out, which I learned about when trying to install Puppy Linux, is why after flashing her BIOS to a newer version, that allows booting from a USB device, it reverted back to the factory settings(after just two boots, IIRC).

Apart from the above, if anybody knows of a way of rejuvenating old, lagging computers that doesn't involve reinstalling the stystem(I'd like to keep my Win XP and haven't got the access to the CD anymore), please share. The usual stuff like cleaning the registry and defragmenting the HD doesn't really do that much improvement-wise.(it still takes over 5 mins to boot up the system, and the daily AVG update pretty much disables everything else for its duration)

This is a thread for people wishing to discuss various aspects of the whole "world police/vigilante" issue as well as the supposed (im)morality of USA.

Life Advice / Help Linux noob connect to the net.
« on: June 24, 2011, 07:20:23 am »
I would post it on some Linux-related forum if I knew one that doesn't mutilate noobs for asking basic questions. Not that I know one that does, I'm just a pessimist in general.

Faced with unbearable slowitude of my P3, 256MB laptop dying slowly under the ever-growing weigth of XP, I've finally made an attempt to switch to a puppy Linux, namely Lucid Puppy 5.2.
Just as advertised, it works like a charm, and is nicely streamlined for the Linux-ignorant folks like myself.

However, I am unable to set up an internet connection, despite all the user-friendly applications included in the distro, and a few hours scouring the internet for help topics. It certainly doesn't help that I've always steered clear of anything net-related, and only touched the subject with a ten-foot pole, and when I really had no other choice.
In other words, I'm trying to follow the instructions, while learning the basics of networking nomenclature, but without much success as of yet.

Here's what I do:
I'm using the network wizard to configure the ethernet interface - apparently it's supposed to ask the server of my IP for all the relevant addresses(DHCP it's called, right?).

Then, seeing how it's a PPPoE type of connection that I've got here on my XP, I try to set it up using the "Roaring Penguin" client. It's a pretty straightforward process, I suppose, with only (perhaps)problem being the part where it asks for DNS - when I choose "server", it fails to retrieve the DNS addresses, but I went and copied the relevant stuff from my XP's connection details, and it assigns some(albeit not the one(s) I typed, strangely). Regardless of whether there is DNS assigned, the client tells me that the connection is successful, but it's a bloody lying bastard.
All I get when I try to get to a website using a Dillo browser is a "DNS resolving <sitename>" in the status bar, and then nothing.

I realise that if I were a client calling a helpcentre, then I'd be a royal pain in the arse with such a vague descriptions, but if you have some ideas as to what I might be doing wrong(or right), or alternatively, any good place to ask/look for help, let me know.

Creative Projects / The adventures of Little Red Riding Hood.
« on: November 29, 2010, 09:54:15 pm »
I've been learning how to use Google Docs lately, the old computer illiterate fool that I am, and when I got my hands of the survey-gathering tool, that is Google Forms, I kinda went overboard and made a choose-your-own-adventure kind of thing. I know, there are better ways to do it, using specialized websites and what not. I know, there are better ways to spend one's free time. I know, Google Forms is pretty much unsuitable for this kind of crap. I know, it's rather horribad, short, silly, etc., but I'd like to have some actually submitted forms to play with the possible arrangements of survey charts.
Here's where you come in:
I'd like you to follow the link provided, and fill the form, i.e.play out the adventure at least once, to the very end, and click the "submit" button. It allows you to go back to the begining just before it ends, to try different approaches, and you're free to do so. Still, I need you to at least once get to the submitting part.

In case you've been wondering, it's totally anonymous.(as if I needed your precious personal data anyway)

Also, rated PG18 for violence, sexual innuendo and bad taste.

Feel free to berate me for creating such a monster.
And thank you for your cooperation.

Howdy,
I'm by no means an experienced modder, been using only a few changes to entity_default so far. Recently I thought I'd add a custom workshop to serve as an "arranged totem" of sorts, as I'm killing a lot of evil buggers and want all their heads sitting nicely in my showroom.
I've copied somebody elses "display case" custom workshop and have no complains to how it works.
However, I'd like this building to cause positive thoughts from the quality of it's design("arrangement") and construction, like e.g. depots and forges do.
Is this at all possible?
I've tried changing [BUILD_LABOR] to [ARCHITECT], but all it does is make my architect construct the thing, not design it.

Can anybody help here, or at least confirm if it's at all impossible?
Thanks in advance.

As you  might've heard, some time ago a South Korean corvette has been sunk by, as the recent investigation proves, a North Korean torpedo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ROKS_Cheonan_sinking
The NK denies involvement, despite investigators having recovered parts of said torpedo, and calls it a slander.
Some sources point out that the sinking could be a revenge action for the naval skirmish which happened in november last year.

After a conlcusive evidence has been found, South Korea suspended all trade relations with NK and announced it'll resume "psychological warfare" against it's northern neighbour, meaning mostly renewed propaganda broadcasts over the demilitarized zone.

NK responded with putting it's army on high alert.

Exactly a year ago, North Korea unilaterally withdrawn from the armstice of 1953, leading to a renewed state of war between the two nations.

What do you think, my good people? Is this a begining of an open war in the Korean peninsula? In such case, would NK be willing to use it's newly acquired nuclear arsenal? Maybe it's acquisition emboldened them so that they feel they can take on their old enemies without fearing a sneak attack from China?
Could this really be a slander manufactured by the SK, maybe? Maybe they feel a need to get rid of that troublesome twin of theirs, before the North expands it's nuclear arsenal to something more than barely flying rockets and low-yeld warheads.
Do you think Kim Jong-il would risk heavy economic sanctions just to get some "revenge"? Perhaps the nation needed a show of patriotic action to stay calm?

After embarking on a terryfing/sinister biome, I'm running around with my starting seven(military-wise, not hunters), killing various stuff. However, I cannot seam to butcher my kills.
Any ideas? Is this a bug of sorts maybe?
Your help would be much appreciated.

Other Games / Infinity - it's going to be Elite as it should've been.
« on: January 06, 2010, 09:59:10 am »
Yes, the upcoming MMO Infinity is old news. It gets mentioned every now and then, never really getting it's own thread, even though it's sheer scope and procedurally-generated gazzilion of stars and planetary content should make every DF fan nod with encouraging appreciation.

Unfortunately, it's still a long way from being a finished product, and unlike DF it doesn't sport a playable alpha. There is a "combat prototype" to try out, though, which lets you fly a range of ships in newtonian-physics and twitch based combat.

But it's ok! We at bay12forums should know better than anybody that anticipation is at least half of the fun the game can bring. And boy, is there something to anticipate.
Watching this for one, makes me glee and salivate. If there is a small part of you that considers itself an amateur-amateur-astronomer, then you'll surely salivate as well.

Come on people. Post your thoughts and indulge yourself with imagining an inevitable fusion of DF and Infinity.

(oh yeah, and watch that video in HD. Otherwise it's just a bunch of blurry dots.)

Perhaps your university lecturer is a terribly boring individual, making it impossible for you to stay awake during sessions?
Perhaps you can't be bothered to wake up early to attend?
Perhaps you just want to listen to interesting stuff while sipping coffe in your comfy armchair?
Or you just want to take a peek at "how they do it" in Yale or MIT?

Play With Your Buddies / Let's Play! Jagged Alliance 2 - dead
« on: July 02, 2009, 03:23:11 am »
Yes, you've all seen it coming, LP of JA2 is here, finally.

I'm going to use somebody else's idea, and make myself (hopefully) finish this game by starting a LP.
Now, while the basic idea of hiring mercs on short term contracts is great and all, I've decided that it's not heroic enough, so instead I'm going to create six I.M.P. characters who will singlehandedly free Arulco of the bandit menace(despite having twelve hands in total).
I wanted to have seven such heroes, as depicted in the two famous movies, but unfortunately, the game doesn't allow more than six. Oh well.

In the meantime, I'm going to need You, bay12 forumgoers, to lend our heroes your personalities. Come on now, I need six people, send me your CVs.
[that's done]
