Tilesets and Graphics / Re: Spacefox 16x16 Graphic and Tileset

This is very nice.   I like the look of the sprites, GJ.

Next time I play, I will load this up and see how it looks at different zoom levels.

Get a picture of itself.
With spikes of bone/turtle shell?

Thanks for the ideas. The mug would be a one off, no mass production, probably using cafepress or something similar.  Kind of like what a kid would get his dad, with his dad's picture or some generic text saying "Best Dad". Except, of course, that instead of some generic text I would having magma flowing over an incoming siege of goblins, with elf corpses laying everywhere.  You know, something cheery.

Maybe I will put the design instructions behind the dwarven magma piston?

@Rushmik: this drawing is awesome! You could have submitted it here! :D

I really like this one and am considering having it on both sides of the stein;  Nice white background, has some in humour, and I think it would look great on a white mug.  I also saw your "Smiling Dwarf", very 'cute'. Rushmik, do you have any more?

DF General Discussion / Need artwork for a custom beer stein
« on: March 15, 2011, 02:40:22 am »
Hello all,

So there are many places on the internet where one can order a beer stein with a custom image.  My wife has offered to get me one as a gift and I really would like to put a image related to Dwarf Fortress on it.  I was wondering if anyone else has done something like this? Did the image on the stein look good? What picture did you use? Etc?

The image size is 1662 by 600 pixels at 200dpi.  It is a white coloured stein.  Would anyone like to submit some artwork, perhaps?  8)

Cheers!

The *worse* thing that DF forums have gotten into (off the top of my head) has been either the sexy-mod/comic for dwarf fortress (which I didn't mind) and the classic ascII versus 'graphics'.  (which we *all* known that ____ is much better then the other one) When I was looking into minecraft for the first time, I almost wrote off the game just due to their horrid forums.  Last night I saw a posting on a 'mod' some one did, where it was obviously a kid's first attempt at changing the icons in the game and he was proud of it, and everyone was flaming him for doing such a poor job.  wtf is wrong with those people.

I think a lot of the credit for our forums consistent level of quality is that Toady cares about how the forums are run and that he takes action when it is needed.  Now i have only been here for, what, 3 years (?) but I would  imagine that when the forums were smaller, Toady established the culture of the forums, which have carried on to today.  This can be seen in the self patrolling that occurs sometimes, but also just in how people act on the forums.

So... go DF Forums! (?)

As the military is of significance now, I have been wanting to have a smelter reaction for full suits of armor for the dwarves.  (If for nothing else but let them live through their first battle)

However, much like the last version, the production of armor from the smelter results in 'large' scale.

Does anyone know how to produce dwarven armor from the smelter?

Also, for food stuff, does anyone know how to produce ration grade items?

Cheers!

DF Modding / Re: What is your gfx resolution?
« on: April 08, 2010, 12:15:25 am »
Current resolution is at 2048x1152.  (16:10 aspect ratio)

I would love a bigger tile size as currently on my 2x2 embark, the map doesn't reach all the way across the monitor. =D

When I started up the newest version, I originally didn't like having to use the escape key as the exit button.  However, now that I have been playing for.... more hours then I care to admit (to myself), I have gotten really use to using the escape key as the back button.  In fact, it is now my preference.  I am curious about what others have found.

Have you checked the save folder?

Each time you gen a world, it creates a copy of the raw folder to be used for that region.

Regardless of future changes to the original raw directory, that region will not use the updated graphics or raw files.

First of all, man up. If you're complaining about a lack of graphics, you really shouldn't be playing DF.

Damn I love this .  If you don't know how to properly play this game the way I do, gtfo.  Nice.  *slow clap*

Hey, I play the game with all my dwarfs being miners and I see how much stone I can dig out before they starve to death. Got an issue with that? Or how about I play with all the colours as a spectrum of red.  Or, I play with 16x16 bit graphic tiles cause I like it. Or, maybe I am going to try playing a single player game the way I want to because I enjoy it. Jerk

*end of rant*

Anyway, to the (partial) solution of your problems.
One potential problem:
If you were using a modified tileset (one without the ancient keys, like Maydays version), you will not be able to get it working.  This is because Mayday edited the raw files to allow for more unique tiles to be used.  What this means is that in the normal version of dwarf fortress the gem (I think?) and the turtle will share the same tile icon.  So this could be an issue.
Second:
Make sure you are using .bmp files.
Third:
It is also important to get the right resolution and grid size. (crit. if you are going to use graphics too).  Now my resolution is 1280&400 and my grid is 80&25.  I use this because my tiles are 16x16, also unlike the default ones.

Last:
I think there is a bug in generating a world using graphics turned on. To generate a world, ensure the graphic settings is turned off.

But, as others have pointed out, this is an alpha release.  If you want something stable, you should stick to the previous version. =p

I can't wait for the bugs.

A light bruise on any part of the body will cause medical dwarves to consider all of the patient's skin a lost cause. The doctor then flays the patient alive.

A military dwarf tantrums.  Then becomes completely useless in training as he now refuses to teach anything but throwing.

Cats will wander off into unexplored underworld in their hunt for vermin.  Sometimes pulling aggro on some very dangerous creatures on their way back. (Can double as a feature)

Kobolds will try to steal dwarf bones, while still inside the dwarf.   And succeed.

A bronze colossus will show up at your fortress.  A furnace operator will runoff, grab it, and melt it at a furnace.

You will be able to milk everything, even without the milkable tag.  It just produces _milk.

Love it! ^^

One thing that does get me about dwarf fortress and visualizers is the fact that you have to build a top ground fort for it to be impressive.

I was wondering, could we invert the open space and filled space?  If you dug out a huge underground base, it would be 'filled' while the soil around it would be empty space.  Perhaps then we can get epic underground fortresses as well?

You'd get something like this.

Yeah, thats the idea!
