DF General Discussion / Re: Graphics : The duel.
« on: January 22, 2010, 11:51:42 am »
I tried playing it with the ascii as I have enjoyed other ascii games, but I only started to get into DF when I had a graphic set. Now I have a graphic pack that has been heavily modified to suit my tastes.

Does anyone else check out different forts on dfma?  I gotta say that graphics make a fort clear to understand and look much better then plain ascii.  (Also, graphics is the way to go with dfma because you cannot use the look function to figure out what something is)

All I need is sprite based graphics.  Would anyone have care about or enjoyed chrono trigger or any final fantasy game if they only were in ascii?

I've gotten a couple of friends to try out dwarf fortress due to my grand stories about it, however they gave up due to the frustrations related to the user-interface.

For example: they didn't like the multiple different methods to look around the map, one for buildings, one for dwarfs, one for stuff inside of buildsing, etc: they didn't like that some actions had different hotkeys in different menus, like to order a floodgate versus building a floodgate, digging a stairwell versus building a stairwell, etc.

They would like context sensitive menus.  (Perhaps accessed by a mouse when right clicking as found in many other programs)

Introducing Quickfort, a template based construction tool for Dwarf Fortress.

Quickfort is a utility for Dwarf Fortress, built with AutoHotKey, that helps you build fortresses from "blueprint" .CSV files (comma separated values). These files are easily created and edited in an app like Excel. Most building-oriented DF commands are supported through the use of multiple .CSV files to describe the different phases of DF construction (designation, building, stockpiles, and making adjustments).

Extremely, EXTREMELY, useful!  Heck, you don't need to use a paint program anymore if you plan it in excel.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cloth industry worth it?
« on: September 18, 2009, 05:04:11 pm »
Suggestion: Ask all your questions in one thread please? The multiple threads are getting a little spammy.

Your play-by-play of your DF experience wouldn't be captivating news even if I was your BFF on IM.

*GASP*

is a question forum.

i askz mah questions, when i needz em,

i aint evah gonna askz the samez questionz twicez, so,

don't read emz, or answerz emz nicelyz, cuz theyz willz be gonez eventuallyz, thenz uz willz mizz emz

with a z

Ow.... your writing hurts the head.

Also, spamming the forums is bad.  Why not create one topic called, "questions a new player has" and post everything there?  It is a good idea.  Also, you are not the first new player to ask new player questions.  Like others have said, try the search function.

Heck, you could always use google.

There you go, hope that helps.

Saw this posted to reddit and had to share. (Note: I didn't draw this)

Now, the author says it is a viking vs a shark, but I think we all know better. The guy is using an axe, he has a giant beard, looks short and is a bad-ass by fighting a shark. He is obviously a dwarf.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Found at the deviant page, http://sharpwriter.deviantart.com/art/Viking-vs-Shark-135361212 just in case they don't allow direct linking.

(I haven't read the rest of the comments)

When I first started playing Dwarf Fortress, I had a similar idea hit me.... every world generation is, in-fact, a new world to colonize.

A little mix up to the dwarf fortress game play would be the fact that the original starting crew would be robots, with limited abilities, who are charged to set up a small base for humans (or "meat-bags", aka organics).  After they have created a controlled environment, then the humans would show up.  This would be desirable as the meat-bags would be able to do higher level research or goods.  There would be multiple trading groups, which you could get on the wrong side by creating black-market goods.

Anyway, I agree with you that the above would have to await for a difference version of dwarf fortress.  But, you gotta admit, a game like DF that inspires such creativity is freaking amazing in itself.

Looks like no one posted a link for you yet.

I am currently using quickfort, http://sun2design.com/quickfort/ , where you use excel to create a spreadsheet drawing of what you want to dig out.  I love it and have used it to plan a central shaft fortress, aka resident evil complex.

I highly recommend it

Let me just ask one question, if the dwarf fortress and the bay12games website was brought up to speed with the year 2009, (or heck lets say it is the super-est, slickest, polish-est website on the net) would it get more people into dwarf fortress?  This is what you suggest.

My answer is no, for the following reasons: people who start playing dwarf fortress have to get over the graphics, one way or the other.  Even if every visitor to the site tried out the game, due to the website alone, honestly do you think those players would have enough of an incentive to overcome the learning curve of the game?

For the most of us, it is by word of mouth or a super review on the internet that gets us into Dwarf Fortress.  We started playing dwarf fortress with the promise of an opened ended game that embodied the phrase "losing is fun".  I remember the first time I booted up Dwarf Fortress; it was an ascii nightmare where nothing made sense.  I quit the game after 5-10 minutes of trying to make sense of it.

However, because of those internet reviews, I went back at it.  Those lithe promises drew me back into trying the game again.  I had reason to keep trying.  Now, I can't stop playing.

If it was just a shinny website, I don't think I would have kept at it.  I would have tried it out and moved on.  I hate to trump the often used phrase, but substance > graphics.

There is also mass dumping of the object onto a stockpile square... this is in addition to the atom smasher solution.

Just wanted to drop a quick thanks.  Was playing with this tool last night and I absolutely love it.  Thanks for your effort!

With respect to the issue of the Player's role in DF: Other games addressed this with the player being a god, this would work for Dwarf Fortress as well.

The player has created a world, in how ever many hours and recreates.  The player then sleeps only to awaken when his world has matured in his leave.  Like any god in our history, the player decides to interfere/intercede on a chosen people.  The people have a priest/prophet that comes to them and says that he is the holder of truth and calls on others to follow him.  The followers have different backgrounds, but decided to follow the enlightened one in his quest to build a fortress, 6 dwarfs follow the priest into the wilderness....

We, the players, are the Blood God Armok.....  after all, how much virtual blood has been spilled by the citizens "following" your orders?   ;D

In the beginning of the fortress, the original 7 dwarfs, (although 12 might work as well  ;) ) share a common belief.  As the fortress grows in renown, more people arrive.  With the nobles arriving, they are only there because of the wealth.  That is why they give their own orders, their own ideas and demands.  While the priest/player, has almost total control, they still have to listen to the rich and influential.  Like many retreats, with the wealth generated by the fort, the outside world takes notice and no longer leaves the retreat alone; it now has to deal with the outside world.  A religious order is created, with customs, practices and buildings.... all player directed. The possible purpose of the religious orders in the game is to maintain or increase the players influence over his people (and to keep the nobles in check).

Anyway, I think I have written enough to make a good argument that the player is god. Every other player has his/her own take of the player's role in the game. But that is the great thing about DF, it is a game that creates stories from the player's interaction with it. For that, I am thankful.  Thanks Toady!

Add two dwarf fortress players of age 24. (myself and my wife)

Cool, who was first?
I was.  ;D

I first read about the game on Freeware Fridays over at Big Download.  I started playing, really was loving it and then convinced my wife to play it too.  (We both use a graphic pack)  When she was learning the game, she basically used me as the in-game help system.  I will say this, having a in-person tutor really speeds up the learning process.

What is really cool is getting to watch someone else play Dwarf Fortress as the game is so open to different methods of playing it.   For instance, when I start up a fort I assign skills based upon the order the dwarves are given to me, except for the woodcutter and the potential mayor.  However, when she starts up a fortress, she reads their bios and assigns jobs based upon what each dwarf would actually enjoy....  Some other areas of different styles come up in providing bedrooms for the dwarfs, the focus on a metalworking industry, and the treatment of animals.  Currently we are playing a bloodline game of Dwarf Fortress with just the two of us alternating years.  I just took my third turn and the fort is turning into one of my longest played.  ( ::) I don't normally stay too long with any one fort...)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Face Palm moments you had
« on: June 25, 2009, 06:20:27 pm »
I normally place the meeting area for my dwarfs outside so that they don't get cave adaptation.  Yet, I still want to provide them a sheltered area so I will also build a roof over their little heads so I prevent 'caught in the rain' bad thoughts.

However, the access to the newly constructed roof was an up stair constructed upon a naturally dug down stair.  That wasn't desirable because the downstairs couldn't be used anymore.  So, I removed the constructed up stairwell so that I could replace it with an up/down stairwell.

....well, it turns out that up stair was the only thing holding up the entire roof over the meeting area.  So, it collapsed.  Also, the meeting area was over the living quarters and dinning hall.... so anyone who was  on break, eating or sleeping was instantly killed.  Worse, all the beds were destroyed, which prevented anyone who did survive from being nursed back to health.

In all total, over 25 dwarfs died by this one mistake, including a legendary glass maker and the dwarfed named for me as I was playing a Bloodline game.  Woops.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Map Request
« on: June 22, 2009, 07:06:40 pm »
You do know that the flow calculations done for magma pipes and rivers are one of the reasons why it is recommend to not have them.  Hence, the previous poster suggestion of having a magma pool and using an aquifer. It allows for higher frame rates. (But, I prefer unlimited magma to FPS)

Also, you should look at the wikipedia page for a couple of locations.  I remember there was one location/map where there was a magma pool situated between two or three massive rivers, but I think the temperature was warm.... and probably not obsidian.

On that note, you don't need obsidian stone when you have unlimited water and magma as you can create your own.  This is both fun and dangerous.  I highly recommend it.

I'll post again with a couple of maps that are fun for your purpose.
