This could also, of course, be abused horribly. "Oh, right, go wait there under that ominous, column-of-shimmering-heat-producing, suspended-ten-tiles-in-the-air cauldron-looky thing."

As such: APPROVAL!
I like the way you're thinking.

Those elves are gonna get it . . . one way ore another . . .

I believe that a slight change in the parameters will change the layout of materials and stuff.  It's the same deal as modding the raws (I think); one little difference changes everything.

I haven't tried experimenting with other underground biomes. Anyone ever successfully make a  [BIOME:UNDERGROUND_LAVA] tree sprout?
This sounds awesome.  I wonder what benefits there would be to a tree like that?  Would it be lighter, or what?

Try Legendary Lands.  I've never used it myself, but it has quite a reputation for producing very interesting Forts (i.e., violent forts in which there is a high death toll, and those that survive are extremely vicious).  Essentially, it makes things as crazy as Nist Akath no matter where you embark (as long as there is an aquifer).

Traditionally, beards on all members of the species is supposed to be one of the major distinguishing features of the dwarves.  However, DF is quickly becoming very un-traditional (cannibal Elves . . .)

However, I like the idea of all dwarves having beards, because I read Terry Pratchett, which is also very un-traditional (although that has nothing to do with why I like it).

As for the dragon, it WILL be set on fire if it gets unlucky. I've even heard stories of dragons setting themselves on fire in wildfire-prone areas.
Oh, yes, I've had that happen before, except that the dragon was surrounded by goblin clothing on a rocky landscape (and tethered with a rope, don't know what I was thinking).

In all of that, my favorites are the Skelk and the guy with the i-pod.

lye is made from ash

wood -> ash -> lye

You're probably thinking of tallow + lye -> soap
Lye made from tallow is the same as lye made from ash (in DF).

Elves don't drink booze, they are anti-dwarves.

The only reason they offer it is because they are afraid of a dwarven invasion.

I mean seriously, they can send hundreds to do battle against a lone dwarf and still lose.
Of course, an elf raised by dwarves could be just as powerful.  It's all that hippy stuff that weakens them.

If only all the other dwarves were that enthusiastic about learning to swim.

Good idea.  This would make it easier to use an airlock entrance for dangerous areas.  You wouldn't have to worry about dwarves not collecting all the stuff from the depot and then leaving it out in the open for kobalds to steal.

heh, you got me thinking now. would a SoF be damaged by a dragon's fire-breath?
I don't know; these particular demons were Frog Demons.

But some creatures that have big enough body temperature (and other tags) can swim in magma. Fire imp and Spirit of fire for example.
But those won't siege your fort.

DF General Discussion / Tamed Megabeasts are the best
« on: November 13, 2008, 09:28:41 pm »
So I had a fort with HFS and two tame megabeasts.  I breached the HFS and lost all my legendary miners.  I tried fight the demons with my marksdwarves, but they quickly run out of ammo and manage to barely avoid death since I trained them in hammer use.  I'm starting to think that they're all going to die (two already had), when my megabeasts show up.  The dragon starts breathing fire on the guys, and my dudes manage to block it.  The other one (some modded megabeast, not too powerful) starts wailing on them.  The only deaths after that are a couple of siege operators and a Royal Guard.  Some of the remaining markesdwarves were heavily wounded by the end of it.  Without those megabeasts, the whole fort would have died.  Just two.  Who else has awesome megabeasts stories like this?
