Nope, the fire immune things will just swim to you.  You gotta automatically encase your entire fort in obsidian to be safe.
I can't remember the exact quote, but Toady One himself stated that [FIREIMMUNE] creatures only think magma is safe.  Hence why dragons will walk down a staircase into a channel of magma.

I created a world with spontaneous combustion deserts as well.  When I brought my adventurer into a forest area right next to one of the deserts, I saw a deer... who soon after wandered into the desert region and burst into flames.

Needless to say, the roast venison was delicious.

 How the heck did you manage to extract it? I imagine a lot of "tests" were done involving dwarves trying to grab it. Then dwarves trying to grab the burning dwarf clothes, etc.
He's an adventurer.  He just grabbed it and ate it.  And consequently had his hands burned off.  Duh.

is it possible to change something that will let you start with more dwarves? i want to pump out a big number of artifacts to give to an adventurer quickly.
I've always thought of that as a reference to Snow White.  Which is funny, because these dwarves are nowhere near as happy as the SW dwarves, are far more foolish, and tend to be horrible fighters when faced with magic.

Hit [esc] while running the game and go to the "key bindings" option from that menu.  Somewhere in there you can change those options.  Just remember to export your changes to text ("s") before exiting.  :)

yeah, thats the menu i was talking about. i looked through that and i can't find it among the myriad of options.
It's easy to miss.  They show up as "<" and ">" rather than "shift + ," or "shift + ." last I checked, anyway.  Changing z levels gave me a lot of trouble when I first started, so I looked in the key bindings.

Well, thankfully I have plenty of iron to work with for this on the map.

I am gonna try and avoid altering the cave as much as possible.

Oh, for those a bit curious as to what can show up in caves, here are some of the more interesting caves I noticed in a text file the game gave me after exporting an image, and the source for this fun idea.

I do have to say, depending on what and where things in a cave show up things could become quite interesting. None of these are from the world I am  currently playing in, just a teaser of how challenging addapting a cave to a fort could be.
I had no idea that could be done.  This should prove very helpful.
It's weird, I had the idea for a pressure plate regulated reservoir just after reading the OP but before reading the first suggestion.  Strange I didn't think of it before, it's a problem I had been wondering about for awhile.

On the subject of ropes, does anyone else know that if a creature is chained or tethered while the restraint is being deconstructed, that creature will be wearing the rope or chain?  It seems appropriate for this kind of thing.  Deconstruct the chains of criminals and use them for spelunking expeditions.

I remember awhile back someone mentioning a glitch where the magma channel tile could be walked upon.  That may have been fixed though, so I think the OP should try removing a building as a test.

Perhaps it didn't cause a magma flood because all light green tiles of a magma building can be walked upon, and are therefore treated as floors.  My guess is that the workshops are simply blocking the magma flow.

I'd recomend that you read a couple of pages a day until you get cuaght up. Seriously, Fenrir, you are a respected member of this comunity, so shape up! Mind you, once you start reading Nist Akath, you just can't stop . . .
Actually, as shocking as this may seem, my brother did, when DC came into the mix.

I've been using DC since nearly the start in order to work around certain bugs and cause certain circumstances.
Well, it was really when it started being used to make things more difficult.  Personally, I thought that made it more awesome than it already was.
