Similar thing happened to me. I had a population of 22 and gross exports of a whopping 290, and was made a barony.

Also: I can't seem to plant longland grass. I want to, so I can make grain-based food, but there's no option in the farm plots to plant it. And yes, I am sure I have seeds.

No, I don't. I guess that explains that, then. Kinda annoying; I suppose I'll just have to turn off banshees for my adventure worlds.

But it's happening everywhere. Every town I go to, there's shades and banshees killing human residents (the shades and banshees and soul wisps have titles like "farmer" and whatnot, too).

Just downloaded 5.10 (Last played on 5.07) and rolled a new adventurer character. I started in a city, and the moment I started, the merchants starting killing each other. Also, in various outlying villages, there are banshee residents, and they kill the human residents as soon as I arrive. What's going on?

Wow, this game is tough. I've been killed twice, both times within three years of starting.

Sorry to hear, but for this crowd, they shouldn't be too broken up.   :P One big hint - start slowly. Don't commit your capital's ADM to Edicts until you have a more stable income. Running out of money in this game in BAAAAAAAAAD. Also, butter up your governors and viceroys however you can before embarking on a major Edict. This game is very different from a normal 4X - even though you have a (fairly) large Empire to start with, it is quite sickly (hence your challenge!)

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining! I love the idea. I've always felt that games in which you play the role of a leader of a vast empire (planetary or interstellar) gave you way too much power. The idea of a game like this in which you have to bargain and scheme and cajole those around you to get what you want is great.

That is what I did wrong at first, yes. Tried to do too many things at once. The first time, for instance, I tried to build four starbases simultaneously, which sank my treasury into the red within a year and gave me a death message within a few more months.

Right now, my biggest issue is that every colony swiftly runs out of building materials before I can even think about getting a starbase built for them. Is it a better idea to just abandon colonies I can't connect to logistically? Also, is it worth it to build manufacturing outposts on extremely hostile worlds (habitability rating <10) if they have very rich strategic mineral ratings?

Finally, are there other empires in the game yet, or is that in the future?

Reduced size lasers. It's already a stretch to mount anything but Gauss cannons or them on something that's under 500t with everything it needs. Ofc. you're going to have a painfully long recharge for anything with a decent aperture diameter.
The ideal purpose of these ships would be surgical strikes.  With an enemy I encountered relatively often, such as the starswarm or a particular NPR, I could tweak the design to deal armor + 1 damage, with the hopes of hitting the engine, and then sending in boarding crew.

Otherwise I might as well go gauss.  Close range gauss is one of the most terrifying things.

I'm a whore for missile fighters, really. I used to stick a gauss on my fighters, but I've found that just plopping a few box launchers on them with size 4-6 missiles makes for quite a dangerous little platform.

So... I've been playing the infamous Goonstation for a long time. Then I have found out of this. Urist McStation. How does this station differ from Goon?

The map is better. Smaller, but better organized. The admins are way better. They hold regular events, they're generally neutral, and they're overall pretty great. It has RP, as opposed to free-for-all mayhem. Grief is punished.

Someone teleported right on top of me. I was wondering how that happened until I remembered I had a tracking beacon in my pocket. If only I had been out on the asteroid and not inside....

Yeah that was me. Oopsies.

Admins, we just had some major bullshit griefing going on. Character name was Robert Fabreras. Was the Chief Engineer. Wasn't a traitor. Destroyed the R&D servers and released the singularity.
