DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Why do my food stockpiles keep dropping to 0?
« on: November 03, 2009, 02:20:34 pm »
Turtles are vermin...

That depends on what the contextual definition of "vermin" is.  If it's "spawn spontaneously", then yes.  If it's "annoy dwarfs and pose a threat to foodstocks", then no.

I guess you're right that here it's "yes", since we're talking about generating food, not controlling pests.

Vermin as in bearing the tag: [VERMIN_FISH].

They do not bear the tag: [VERMIN_HATEABLE], nor: [VERMIN_EATER].

Use retracting bridges instead of raising bridges.

With my (minimal) mods, there are no features other than three huge branches of water joining in a Y-shape.  There are some ponds on the land, and large numbers of fish in the rivers which took quite some time to spawn in.

Search your hauler corps for dwarves who arrived with food-gaining skills like fishing and herbalism and set them to do that if you have water/plants...

I'll be corrected if I'm wrong, but I believe that even if you have no handy pools/rivers, if you can create an artificial lake (above ground or UG), turtles and other misc fish will start appearing. They're like vermin that way.

Turtles are vermin and will appear even in channeled out aquifers.  The only time I have not gotten turtles, I got mussels instead.  Both turtles and mussels can be eaten raw, or prepared, or cooked.

I chose a spot not far away, and got a brook with a 1-z fall.  It also changes direction at that point.  It is flooding out of its banks.  Is this unusual?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

It seems like I ought to be able to do something creative with this.

I want to see how a Dwarven mother carries octuplets.   :D

Weirdly, one of my kidnapped ones was Ecstatic while missing both eyes and with a damaged brain.  The apparent location was the place where the kidnapping took place.  I tried bringing the kid back with Dwarf Companion, but all I was able to do was change the location of the ghost.

I thought it was the harvester quality that dictated the size of the stack?
I sure hope not, since by default everyone harvests.
Okay, I looked up the reference I remembered, and read up on it in the Wiki.  It is the planter's skill that dictates the size of the stack.  It's just that leaving it set for all to harvest reduces the speed at which the planters gain skill, and also tends to make more low-quality planters from Dwarves who have no other skill.  What I remembered was "you will get bigger stacks if not everyone harvests", which is true, but not for the reason I thought.  :)

This one isn't very valuable, but I found it amusing.

Sungconfuses the Blazes of Spoiling, a raccoon leather thong.  It is decorated with turtle shell and encircled with bands of raccoon leather.

So far, so good, but then:

On the item is an image of Kib Confinedblockade the dwarf in rat leather.
On the item is an image of The Wooden Tooth the rope reed chausse in cave spider silk.

Kib Confinedblockade is the king of the mountainhome.

So, on this thong is an image of the king and an artifact pair of armor-grade socks?  I wonder who would wear such a thing?   :D

You can render that barrel of fat in a kitchen and make biscuits from the tallow.

Are you saying that you have no raw fish, either?

Dwarves will move more slowly without alcohol.  I don't know if they eat less.

You can only save 200 of any seed type.  If you have a lot more lying around, try cooking some of those.  I don't suppose purple powder off the bottom side of a mushroom is all that tasty, but it might stave off starvation.

Horses and donkeys don't eat vermin, as fas as I know.  Although, when my Animal Trainer tamed some wild muskox, he fed them turtles and those are vermin.

98+ (I lost my place a few times) u-c-space later:

That's a good thought, Quietust, but none seem to be missing any appendages.  I suppose it is possible that they belong to mutilated caravan personnel who have left the map.  I can try to check those next autumn.

Edit:  No one in the Dwarven caravan is missing an appendage.

On a reclaim, it looked like there were 30 or so dwarves available (from where, I don't know).

Obviously they were created by a divine power, just as were the original Dwarves in year 1.  The description of Tholtig Kavishrazes says "She was one of the first of her kind."  This is the same as the entries for year 1 and year 2 creatures.

A thought occurred to me, which may be silly.  Are they by any chance assigned to escort duty, with military or some other Dwarves?  Those aren't exactly pets, and I've often seen them not following their master very closely.  Maybe it is possible to chain such dogs?
