DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Those Keas!! DAMN THEM ALL TO HELL.
« on: December 05, 2015, 11:49:37 am »
One of my fortresses, I had to cheat using DFHack to construct a hollow obsidian monolith to contain buggy items that keas kept on stealing, which resulted in crashing my game, once they left the site. After I pinned down the items that caused the problems (trial and error, and predictable birds), I constructed said monolith, and teleported all the problem items inside it, seeing as apparently deleting them one way or another also crashed the game.

For the sake of the site, I had to at least engrave it to make it look cooler, and so the dwarves had something less creepy to look at that a master engraver made himself. It's more or less a tourist landmark for the site now. Cue the 2001: Space Odyssey music.

Beat X-Com: Final Mod with:
-Full global surveillance (AWACS-type craft fill in the gaps where all 10 bases couldn't reach, (Small and Large Radar, and a Hyper-wave decoder each base; with 3 hangars each base as aircraft checkpoints (at least 1 free hangar for relay-shipping of craft, and extending troop range for UFO raids)))
=With a security base at Pearl Harbor (8 hangars filled with varied craft as a situation calls for, and enough storage to keep all ships fully-stocked, with some room for personnel security (in case of a Retaliation while the rookies are out)
-At least 16.5M in my bank before raiding Cydonia (after paying the monthly bill; before that, I had roughly 34M, monthly Mainainence was is enormous (Income = 16M-ish, and monthly expenses = 32M-ish), but worth every damn penny.)
-A devoted storage base fully loaded with an arsenal of alien weaponry (for emergency funding and restocking of weapons/ammo)
-4 bases with 2 of each devoted to research and manufacturing separately (when not making top-priority items, they've been pumping out low-cost/good-profit goods for sale; research bases split projects between weapons and alien life forms, until they were no longer a priority, then remaining low-cost research for one, high cost for the other)
-At least 2 bases were devoted to Alloy and Elerium Storage when over-stocked (Until I gambled on Fusion Ball tech, and nearly depleted a supply making ammo for my interceptors)
-Only lost one nation to the aliens (Brazil, and only because I didn't stop a base in time, and that happened during March)
-Most, if not all aliens (live and dead, with some Medic assistance) researched, including the more rare/unique visitors featured in the mod (like Ethereal Guardians and such).
-Minimal casualties (maybe a dozen losses; then again, I did some early save-scumming; later on, I just did PSI-Ops to spare lives)
-Aliens also suffered minimal casualties (<500 kills total; >thousands of stuns (way more profitable when you keep them alive; excess containment sells the live ones). MiBs were a slightly different case. Free Stormtrooper and Power armors, easy profit when fully-stocked. Spared/stunned/sold the useless, killed the armored for their suits.)
-Defeated Cydonia with a pacifist (or at least, non-lethal) victory (stunned everyone on the surface and underground, and destroyed the master brain)

And best of all

-I beat the game (mod) that's stated to take longer than 3 in-game months, and maybe longer than an in-game year (according to the mod makers) by Early November '99 with all of the above done.

This calls for some victory music

Up next: I'll become the real Terror From/Of The Deep. I might have to retro-fit the Pearl Harbor Base to be submarine operable. Same setup as before. Quick to build, and extremely useful, not to mention a hell of a strategic advantage point.

Having played a couple "Board Game Gone Digital" games, there are some that no longer really exist anymore that demands a digital/arcade upgrade, and might actually translate very well.

Anyone remember Crossfire (Caution: Very 90s)? I have, and it was fun. Now digitze it as a local/online 1-8 player game (controls are kinda like Bust-A-Move (gun rotates, but doesn't move) and breakout (defending your puck, while trying to score points), except like a machine gun), add danmaku-game style upgrades/powerups to your gun, change the arena style and shape (3-player triangle, classic 2-player octagon, etc., even custom arenas; gravity-well (bends shots) or black hole (center-field is death, and also a gravity-well); creeps that can damage your puck(s) HP, or push them towards the goal (or player-assigned creeps)), and retain the core rules or house rules of Crossfire (player is the puck and the gun/goal) or classic "Air Hockey" style rules (sink the puck(s) to score); even change the friction of the game board (standard for classic board game and Space for 0-friction games). More players, more sides to the arena, with the option of "Same Side, Same Team" seeing as scoring a goal would be difficult to near-impossible to do; unless you can pinball the puck into the neighboring goal.

And of course, we can always have Classic Crossfire style, or Geometry Wars style graphics for the game.

The RPG dialogue thing kinda reminds me of the classic Tex Murphy games. You had some speech options to select from to get through some set-piece story here and there, but you also had an additional option to ask unique questions much like hypertext, like asking names, locations, items you had in your inventory (data disk and password, (person)'s address, for example; which add new locations to visit, new inventory items, or even new dialog trees to go through), and so on, and they would have a response for it; though a majority of the time, they'll also respond with "I don't know anything about that.", but hey, at least you can ask, and even re-trace to earlier questions like that if previously asked (check your spelling). Sometimes, that's the only way to get certain items, and in certain cases, you better ask fast, before your lead dies on you.

Had this thought cross my mind today. Seeing as it's Black Friday today, and not all of us go for the thrill of the chase for cheaper crap; I wonder if anyone's ever made a game based on Black Friday sales?

As far as I would assume, it would be a roguelike/rogue-lite. Give your character some stats, a budget, generate a store (electronics/wal-mart style/etc. (different property dimensions and shop item distributions, as well as density of people to work around)) with some "target items" (randomly generated based on stats/personality), or even a customized shopping list of sorts, or hell, freestyle it.

Claw through the ranks of people, reach for the ultimate deals, cause a few scenes, save 5 bucks on that blender. So what if you have to sacrifice a family gathering for a bargain?

EDIT:
Secondary game mode, "Employee of the Month". You and your fellow employees have to do your jobs, as well as serve as crowd/damage control. I hope you have 911 on speed dial.

Happy Turkey Day!

Apply to job (with about 10 other applicants tagging along), charge a proper rate ($20/hr), no response for nearly 2 weeks (no markups of interviews or hires with any of the other 10 applicants either).

Change rate to something impossible to refuse ($5/hr) to see if the job's still relevant. Declined in less than an hour since price update.

Stay classy, employers. And thanks for helping me research the psychology of unresponsive clients.
I'm guessing where you are the minimum wage is less than $12?
Actually, it's freelancing using an online resource/freelance website. So location is only relevant regarding time zones. And sorta, yeah.

EDIT:
Just checked back a moment later, and they're finally interviewing somebody.

EDIT:
At the crappy rate of employment I'm getting with freelancing (regardless of pricing), I need some more social experiments to run on (potentially) unresponsive clients, or at least to troll them into backing up their "Communication is a priority" double-standard they spout.

Creative Projects / Re: Random Things you drew/shopped/made/etc.
« on: November 23, 2015, 12:27:31 am »
Took a crap-ton to motivate myself to do some art again; especially since I've had quite a lull of work, and a lack of funds to upkeep my morale. But besides my work issues (regarding sending applications out and communication-minded ("MUST KEEP CONTACT WITHIN 24 HOURS") clients being unresponsive as ever in a rather ironic twist (2 months waiting on a job with a deadline in less than a week, and still no word from them, for any of us dozens who applied to said job (at least 40-odd applicants, no interviews, no hires, for any of us dozens. I mean, what the hell?))), I've finally managed to get off my ass, and hire myself to do some engineering work on my ship for an hour or two.

My progress so far:
-Chassis is about 25% done
-Decided to build progressively, adding as I go, instead of sequentially (chassis, then piping/wiring, then equipment and hull portions, etc.).
=Along with chassis frame, I'm also applying the skin of the ship as I move on to better guide my progress.
-Barrel for the beam cannon/railgun/coil-gun (whichever) is made.
=Dao-Cannon, main unit, still needs to be built (fires both holy and unholy energy; as well as firing in Yin-Yang fashion yielding a nuclear effect on targets, eviscerating angels and demons alike as well).
=Makes use of the beam cannon/railgun/coil-gun barrel, and dimensional prisms for the secondary fire.
=Dao-Cannon's Secondary firing measure (homing energy projectiles/beams) still needs to be established and hooked up as well.
-Primary (Lower) Bridge is more or less setup (needs much more work, but at least I got the pilot's seat installed)
=Upper and lower accessways have been established. Now needs hallways installed, and associated rooms and Captain's Quarters.
-Fore Tuning-Fork chassis frame is in the works.
-4D-μ (4-Dimensional Manipulator Unit; to re-direct fire, or fuck with physics, or jump planets without traveling through space) has yet to be constructed, dimensionally split, and then mounted onto the ship (just to fuck with engineers, especially when reverse-engineering the technology, or to figure out how a split wheel still spins completely).

We've got a hell of a distance to go on this megaproject, but I at least made some progress. I've been regarding my old 3d model for reference, especially for scaling things properly, relative to one another (like resizing the gun barrel, and ensuring the dimensions of the bridge were right).

EDIT:
Unlike many other ships I've seen built in Minecraft, this sucker's not going to be hollow. I'm putting in as much effort in this as I did with Bloodfist; engineering it to be as convincingly built as possible (pulling as much BS-engineering as I can get away with, using command blocks and the like as possible). Minus the 300+ casualties. Sure, I could build this in Space Engineers instead, and have something we can actually fly (let's say the 4D-μ generates the atmosphere (siphoning other sources, while generating a Klein-containment field (Basically, the ship uses a Klein bottle to keep itself in good form atmospherically; especially in rather hostile environments, ranging from toxic environments to the vacuum of space or de/re-synching within solid matter (like hiding literally under ground, yet not within a cave system. I mean it; IN the ground, sharing the same space as solid matter, sans displacement.)) and gravity manipulation (this is an airship, after all, not a spaceship; although there has been a recent 'Planets Update')), but I don't feel like learning a whole new game's system, plus, my computer's not exactly up-to-date for that kind of game, even on basic/crap settings. I'm sticking with what I know.

EDIT EDIT:
Some story based on the ship: Kudos to the Excalibur's 4D-μ, extra-dimensional beings had to hit the crew of the ship with some new combat laws, exclusive to anyone that has a lucid/conscious understanding of extra-dimensional physics (forget the math and science, and use your imagination), and application, or shall I be more precise and say blatant abuse, of them. And for the Mark-II's (AKA-Quis ut Deus; named after St. Michael's sword) 7D-μ, which is a whole 'nother can of worms there; involving elder gods of all kinds of religions and the like having some issues with the crew and regulate even stricter rules involving Infinite (Im)Probability and (Un)Reality Manipulations and Chronos--Kairos Temporality Manipulations, and abusing those laws for recreational purposes (forget abusing infinite probability for wars and the like; have a bunch of highly imaginative and rather child-like/childish peaceful screwballs like myself and the crew of the Excalibur (Mk. II) at the helm of something that ultimately powerful, and we can give anything/everything/nothing a massive headache. I can't help but to play the Freakazoid theme whenever I think of this. And I guess, regarding an AI controlling such a device: Something, something, next thing the crew knows, their personal-AI/crew member becomes a literal Deus Ex Machina 'Virtual God(dess)' (and (part of) the ship itself), and the pantheon of gods (and flying spaghetti monsters) now have a new pain-in-the-ass/smartass joining their ranks. Remember kids, be careful when you uplink your AIs to extra-dimensional (magical) machines. And for the story, at least the crew didn't have to worry about the AI going SHODAN/Skynet on them; I mean, what's the point when you can navigate infinite probability/reality?

Seems about right. I don't belong in anything politics-related whatsoever, seeing as I'm in the 1%.

In summary, I'm pretty much apathetic about everything nowadays. TO THE APATHY PARTY!!! (Shit. I'm unacceptable. Oh well... Wait... Now I'm re-invited?)

I had RequestPolicy and NoScript on, so naturally, I couldn't see anything, at first. To see the image, I had to go to the direct link and allow the site so I could see it. Reloading the thread gave me "Night".
Can you normally see rotating avatars? (Like mine when it's not broken)
More or less, it's a similar process; but I think I allowed it, instead of temporarily like I did for the thread. So most of the time it should work (along with some others) and be visible.
