DF General Discussion / FORUM MEGAPROJECT: Rendering Planepacked
« on: August 25, 2009, 12:07:18 am »
I figured, enough with the talk, let's get to work. We all wanted to see this thing in all it's glory, and we know one single being can't have that much of a fey mood on their own, so I invite just about any fey Dwarf to join in and help us render this impossibly beautiful artifact and relic of pure awesomeness.

Inspired by Toady One with his update tracker, I'll update each segment of Planepacked's progress in similar manner. And if necessary, even include a progress bar. Progress (Due to limited space for text/code) will be divided 70 lines into clusters of 10 items of detail-per cell, and in 100-200-100 items-per-post, dividing it into a triple-post that can be updated as one, and allow formatting of each within character limits per post.

This is a grand undertaking for all of us, and I do believe, what will come of this will be so awesome, even the almighty Armok will have to bow down to it's glory.

A simple ground-rule: We're only rendering the images/details as they are marked according to text. Artistic quality doesn't matter, only the final product does. We're only simplifying the final product by producing the puzzle pieces first, and then assembling it into the final image of beauty. I figure this is the most optimal way to accomplish this.

And remember, please post your progress and update accordingly.

As for gathering the images for composition, I think it's best to assemble all 10 images/details into a single picture document. That way, I can post the images next to the finished items, so that indexing it will be made easier.

Volunteering Rules:
If you're willing to volunteer, either make note of it in a post or PM me; tell me which cells you're willing to work on, and I'll update it accordingly. And assignment is on a "first come, first serve" basis. No reservations. I'll make note on the first page the status of "hiring" if I'm accepting PM's or not. To prevent me and the topic from getting spammed with requests if that's a risk.

Oh, an when PM'ing me, be sure to add [PLANEPACKED] as the title/subject header.

Well then, enough dilly-dallying; let's get to work!

This might come in handy.

Did anybody draw planepacked?

Because... somebody has to...
Maybe I should. Someday.
...Way ahead of ya. Didn't start thread yet though.

The only way to test that theory is to Atom-Smash Planepacked and see what happens.

A link, for those who have not gazed upon is immense visage.
Gives me an idea to start a thread of rendering this mothercarper. Basically, everyone render parts of the statue with their interpretation, find out how it all would be placed/illustrated onto it, and well, illustrate this beauty.

Pardon the derail for a moment, but I imagine in all it's glory, it would look like Trajan's Column. Yes, even we made Planepacked here. It's this dimension/reality's equivalent.

Pictures for reference:
Spoiler: Full column (Hi-Res) (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Bottom portion (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Really up close (click to show/hide)
Spoiler: Base (click to show/hide)

Back to topic...

I want my airship!!! But how can we atom smash that monster? It's the size of Armok's fist. :-\

EDIT:
...Wait. A. Second.

IT IS PLANEPACKED!!!!! IT'S THE REAL THING!!!!!

Proof, the statue part of it is on the top of the "column". We already did it some time ago. The "Dwarven Age" was considered, and it was sent back in time. It was said to have been completed in 113 AD. When was Planepacked finished? Or more importantly, when did we send it?

I figure a systematic deciphering of the beauty would get this taken care of properly, and in proper order.

Minor problem; keeping track of it all. Some idea of how to track it would be similar to Toady's bloom tracker by color as posted in the sticky above.

I figure we can have a progress meter marked as well. However, I think a double/triple post would be needed to contain all the text of Planepacked, as ordered by segment (like every 10 lines or so). Every member involved will take their part, and can volunteer to do additional parts if not already claimed.

It's mostly abstracting each component into individual pictures, then figuring out how the statue would look, as well as be decorated. Even the arrangement and design of the statue alone would be a task that can be assigned.

...Screw it; I'm up for tracking, and probably handling some of the bits and pieces.

Oh, and someone with massive talent should illustrate the final product. 3D designers are welcome to render it (the 2D rendering if finished first) in 3D. Or vice-versa if necessary.

We can consider this the forum megaproject.

ALRIGHT DWARVES, GET YOUR CHISELS READY! WE'VE GOT ALOT OF WORK TO DO!!!!

EDIT:
Additional notes before I get cracking on it will help. I'll allow maybe 15 or so minutes before I open it up, so I'm all ears before I start.

POST-EDIT EDIT:
You know... It doesn't help that this thing has 203 FRIGGIN' LINES!!! I will definitely need to triple post if necessary. Especially if I have to include coding for the update/progress colors. Ugh. :P

BTW, Working title right now is "FORUM MEGAPROJECT: Rendering Planepacked". I'm open to better title suggestions.

The character limit is 40,000 per post right?

Using a bridge actually sounds like a cheap and effective alternative.

Floodgate the doorways into the aquarium anyway as a backup for the backup. You know, in case the bridges fail, you can still quarantine the area so it doesn't kill the fort. Plus, you'll have some additional features for the fish to hang out in.

Ooh! Idea! Someone can always make a giant aquarium. Just make little castles and whatnot, build a giant sphere/box out of glass, and fill it with water and fish caught.

...Or was that already used for a contest? Either which way, it could work for collection with aesthetics. Which, BTW, Vis-fortress ought to have an option for transparent water/magma (glassy-transparent magma).

And speaking of magma; why not a magma variant with all sorts of fire critters subbing fish?

Seriously people, four pages on a five letter word. Why are we so crazy.
Because we're dwarves. Simple enough.

Almost caused the end of my MP. I had to beat that guy up big time. No overtime pay for pulling that crap.

Dwarves in D&D are stereotypically scottish.  I've yet to see a DF dwarf say och or aye or laddie, though, thank goodness (for originality).

Scots pretty much fail though--when you look at wars they've had bad luck.  It's why DF dwarves are Russian.  Look how often Russia has been sieged!  Not to mention the quasi-communism that goes on in these forts.  ;D
I prefer to see my dwarves in an Irish manner. We're happy little boozers (oddly enough, stereotypically accurate.), we yoik and sing, and we fight and we dance til' the morning. (Sorry, I've been listening to a bit of Korpiklanni lately. BTW, awesome band.) Inventive, and just plain nuts.

Proof of concept, and a little easter egg as to why I like the name Bloodfist (IE- Megaproject). It's also sorta in honor of my great ancestor who won a decent chunk of land in a race. By technicality, the first person to touch the land wins it. My great-ancestor was losing the boat race, to reach the land.

Now, I must repeat. The first one to TOUCH the land, wins it. He was losing. You can guess what happened next.

...Yeah. I think I'm a descendant of dwarves. There's even a coat of arms that chronicles it with a similar tribute.

Spoiler: Full Crest (click to show/hide)

...My entire family (including myself) is just plain nuts. I love it. ;D

I advise you have floodgates as a backup doorway in case of flood. Usually a good precaution.

You know, I keep getting the feeling you guys don't like elves.
It's because they eat the dead bodies of their victims.

Nah, it's because they trade almost nothing of value (short of exotic animals, which they're too uncivilized to even enter trade agreements so it's random) while making ludicrous demands about deforestation. They used to be even worse and wouldn't trade anything but stone or metal, which is about enough to make you want to punch a baby (more than enough to kick an elf baby). Plus their armies are puny, so they aren't even really a threat.
But these Elves don't have noses, and I didn't even have to mod the game to cause it.
Doesn't that make them cuter?
In a way. But that's because it fits their personality better.

Dwarf technology is all over the place; they're capable of complete annihilation on an atomic level (or alternitively, interdimensional travel) as well as perpetual motion machines and machinegun crossbows, yet at the same time a simple wheelbarrow is apparantly beyond their capabilities.
Atomic, you say?

Well, my construction/mining parties have come across some pitchblende inside one of the mountain peaks. I believe I have a self-destruct mechanism set for my good old-fashioned steam-powered airship. And with a little bit of tinkering, I could fashion a gearbox and driveshaft to setup an auto-ballista on the sides of the ship, along with a flamethrower at the nose.

If you want the very definition of the dwarven technology level, seek the Bloodfist. But, by the time you see it, you're already dead.

Dwarves are probably advanced enough to create steam powered pistols / rifles.
My response: Pitchblende... refined. And auto-ballistae.

You can sorta say that this guy is part of the construction/engineering team.
