DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Glass windows and floors
« on: May 29, 2012, 02:31:31 am »
It is, but I don't think there's any design that's safe from flying building destroyers who bring expert archers. Fortifications help but don't failsafe against archers, windows can be broken.

Pitting through a grate is quick and dirty, but really, what else are you going to do with poults?

So a couple forts ago I set up a pretty nice magma incinerator for goblinite and general waste. Thought I was being clever, yeah? A ~100z shaft, ending in a little magma pump cycle that incinerates non-iron things. It intersects most of my workshop levels for industrial waste, and my farms as well, for farm waste. Starts at my butcher shop, natch.

Set up little watchtowers all over the map so that I can rain pointy death on anything I dislike. Figured I'd set up some moats fed from the local river to make anything narsty path past my pointy-death dispensers.

You can see where this is going. Channeled the river just wrong, it flooded into every level of my fort simultaneously. Piles of steam at the workshop level, huge rivers of water flooded through the dining room, the farms were just a lake. The army is cut off from everyone else and all food, my masons are trapped inside my dining room, my miners are trapped on the workshop level. Gross.

I eventually saved the fort. But dang, that was work.

Considering building a moat to keep the zombies away from the healthier parts of the forest. Casualties for this fort are pretty extensive, average dwarf halflife is about four months. Finally got beds for everyone made. Working on enough coffins. Neglected to bring a helmet with me, so the copper gear and silver warhammer set has gone through several wielders, all lost to head wounds. Sad. Breached the caverns, cages are being made just fast enough to tuck away the trolls and suchlike.

Long term plans include a little tower with an ogre in it, fortified in, for target practice.

Oh man. Delicious! My marksdwarves train mostly on flying things near my fortress.

Accidentally pelting a carpenter with rotting meat, causing him to vomit profusely.

Probably whenever I figure out this minecart thing.

DF Modding / Re: Questions that are Difficult to Explain in the Title

You could try giving a few unpleasant but ultimately harmless syndromes to the ogres that do the reactions. Nausea, dizziness, that kind of thing.
Can you hand out pain through syndromes? That seems pretty direct.

You'd just need a creature with animation interactions.  I haven't tried such a thing in Fortress Mode yet, but I doubt they would be counted as fort members able to wok, probably as pets instead.
Is there a more recent update of Wizards tower for .34.0<whatever> yet? I love this mod dearly and from my heart's apex. Any word?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: More than two Forgotten Beasts per year

I don't know, some forgotten beast poisons can help you. About half my dwarves are missing their kidneys, but they seem to be fine. *shrug*.

I had one that caused necrosis of all sensory nerves once. I built a barracks over his dead body. Pain-proof dwarves!

I build little 1x1 walls, build a cage on top of the pillar, hook it up to a lever, deconstruct the ramp, and station marksdwarves nearby. I have a gorlak with maybe one undamaged body part in my current fort. Dodging can be a problem, but in my experience they tend to get shot, pass out, and then just lie there.

This is my proudest achievement. LFR + FD challenge+ FD bonus + FD vanilla. I have made it 4 years! I have survived goblins, nightwings, white tigermen, ferric elves, maybe six forgotten beasts, and of course the usual deep wolf gangs.

I set the outside world on fire twice, and built a magma-powered incinerator. Awesome. Sadly, I accidentally flooded it while trying to dig a moat. And failing, obviously. BUT THEN: I drained it and fixed it! I have a tree farm now.

Farming is working, I have a nice big population of sabre-toothed tigers and dogs, and I'm working on speckling the map with fortified pillboxes. Noice.

So nickname him Charles Xavier and thank your lucky stars. My managers never do anything.

Good luck, set up a place to watch the world burn, and shoot at all of it with bolts.

Yeah, diggers would be pretty bad. Balanced by being pretty slow, so you can see them coming. And marksdwarf emplacements would be able to pick off a lot of them, leaving the diggers themselves to be hacked to bits by your troops.

Definitely more dangerous sieges where they bring ladders and grappling hooks and picks and battering rams.

Tactical placing of the fort would matter a lot more than it does now. High walls built of smooth blocks. If you were really hardcore you could make walls out of glass, making them unclimbable. That would be neat.

This is related to my now-standard garbage disposal system. You pit everything into a huge chute that falls all the way to the magma sea(well, almost). It lands one tile above the magma sea and one of my military dwarves pumps magma over it. Every so often I turn off the pump and recover the magma-safe loot. I have yet to make this work flawlessly, sadly.
