fall apart.

It would be pretty bizarre to have gigantic stone bridges soaring everywhere.  Historically, even building bridges over rivers has been a difficult task.

I think a lot of these sorts of things should really wait until the game is mostly done.   Consider it like a cake that needs to be baked before you can frost it.

Oh hell no, I can't let ignorance like this stand.
You need to build your whole fricking architecture around multi-threading from the start, you can't just tack it on, doing so results in many many bugs and other varied problems( kind of like breaching HFS without a military ), this goes for all core functionality, and by god, multi-threading is core functionality.

This is the reason why Toady gutted DF when he went over to 3d, the existing stuff simply couldn't be modified that way reliably( though he has left a significant portion of code in 2D, siege engines being the most glaring example ).

TL;DR
multi-threading is like butter in the cake dough and not frosting.

Copper picks are cheap as hell, I fail to see why you wouldn't take more than three( besides, having the starting seven as miners is useful ), it's not like you can't bring along plenty of booze and food to substain them for years

what about a multi-level magma pool( 9x9x3 ) fed by a pipe supported by a bridge( 3x3 ), above which one empty layer of air, and above that another bridge( 3x3 ) supporting water( 3x3x1 ), also fed by a pipe

on lever pull, both bridges open, water hits magma and creates magma in mid-air, which falls through the rest of the magma and through the hole where the opened bridge is onto whatever is under it.
magma should be considerably slower in flowing out, leaving you enough time to close the bridges etc again without the magma pool flowing out entirely, leaving you at least another use

this all relies on the magma falling slower than water and obsidean...

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Why not crossbows?
« on: October 23, 2008, 05:21:53 am »
As I understand it, the battle of Agincourt had the crossbowmen losing because they missed an essential part of their kit, specially modified shields they used to quickly reload and hide behind, so the mercenaries pretty much went on the field at less than full effectiveness.

Treating longbows as the ultimate medieval ranged weapon is simply foolish, they were reasonably effective, but they didn't dominate the battlefield.
It almost reminds me of japanophiles salivating over katana.

Thats rather the point of the qoute.

Indeed, I was referring to "just as someday a CHEMIST may find a way to transmute lead to gold."

Actually, we can do that now.  It just takes a particle accelerator and a hell of a lot of money.

Chemist.
